Hmm, farmed salmon have a substantially different nutritional profile to wild salmon.

Dead Whale Tagged With Graffiti In Atlantic City
May 1, 2014 3:38 PM

ATLANTIC CITY (CBS) – The Marine Mammal Stranding Center says a small dead whale, believed to be a minke whale, washed ashore near the Center Pier off of Martin Luther King Boulevard and the beach.

It is not known exactly when the 15 foot long whale washed up.

Purple spray paint could be seen on the white underbelly of the carcass, but it is unclear who spray painted the whale.

A dead dolphin was also discovered at the beach on Indiana Avenue.

The dolphin was about five feet long and weighed less than 200 pounds.

Just last summer at least 93 dolphins washed up along the Jersey Shore. More than 430 dolphins died as a result of an outbreak of the Morbillivirus.

Marine Mammal Stranding Center officials are on site to perform a necropsy on the whale and dolphin, and a state pathologist will take samples to determine the cause of death.

They will both be buried on the beach.

Scientists could use gulf coast sharks with satellite-linked tags to predict hurricane intensity by measuring ocean temperatures

Scientists may be able to predict just how big a storm could get with the help of 750 sharks, tuna, tarpon, and billfish now swimming through the Gulf of Mexico with satellite-linked tags.

University of Miami researchers tagged the animals over the past decade to record water temperature and salinity at various depths.

Earlier this year, researchers discovered that those temperature figures could actually be crucial warning signs for people living in hurricane zones.

A money-making idea: Exporting Asian carp to China

While not exactly making lemonade from lemons, officials in Mississippi are hoping they can take a growing problem with an invasive fish species and turn it into a money-maker.

On Tuesday, Mississippi Governor Phil Bryant and officials from Moon River Foods, a subsidiary of China's Shanghai Shen Ren Trade Co., Ltd., said the company would invest $3 million and hire up to 100 people to harvest and process Asian carp caught in the state.

Jumping Asian carp invade Missouri River

According to the Mississippi Development Authority, Moon River Foods will work with contract fishermen licensed by the state to commercially harvest Asian carp from the Mississippi River and its tributaries. The fish will then be brought for processing to a new facility in the town of Baird and eventually be exported to China, where they're a staple food.
Moon River plans to have its Asian Carp production line up and running by the fourth quarter of this year. "We will try our best to make the project a success and provide job opportunities and economic development in the Mississippi Delta," the company's chairman, Xiaohan Zhu, said in a press statement.

The Coolies export their "staple food" already. All we need is more tainted fish from those Subhumans. The only business we should be doing with them is to feed them to animals we can eat and make leather goods from such as pirhaña fish, alligators, crocodiles and even to smaller fish in smaller pieces.
Unlike other foodstuffs, it's impossible to determine the origin of a fish, except through the contaminants it's tainted with.

Filthy seafood infected with bacteria or tainted with drugs and antibiotics banned in the U.S. is finding its way onto the plates of Americans, according to state and federal officials, consumer advocates, academics and food safety experts.

The U.S. imported more than 17.6 million tons of seafood in the last decade, according to a News21 analysis of import data from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Only about 2 percent of imported seafood is inspected, and only 0.1 percent is tested for banned drug residues

TEFÉ, Brazil — As the howler monkeys roared near this outpost in the far reaches of the Amazon rain forest, Valdenor da Silva grasped his harpoon and guided his canoe through the dazzling floodplain mosaic of lakes and channels in a quest for his prey.

“The river giants are plentiful this year,” said Mr. da Silva, 44, a father of eight who puts food on his family’s table by hunting down the pirarucu, one of the world’s largest freshwater fish. Flashing a smile, the fisherman, standing 5 feet 7 and weighing 160 pounds, added, “Every pirarucu I’ve harpooned this season is bigger than I am.”

In piranha-infested waters, fishermen go in search of the pirarucu, which can grow as long as seven feet and weigh more than 400 pounds, placing them in the ranks of freshwater megafish like the Giant Pangasius (often called the dog-eating catfish) and the Mekong giant catfish, both found in the distant Mekong River basin.

A new trout species described from the Alakir Stream in Antalya, Turkey
Dec 12, 2014

A new trout species described from the Alakır Stream in Antalya, Turkey
New trout species Salmo kottelati. Credit: Prof. Dr. Davut Turan,

A group of researchers from Recep Tayyip Erdoğan University, Faculty of Fisheries in Turkey discovered a new trout species. The newly described species Salmo kottelati, belongs to the Salmonidae family, which includes salmons, trouts, chars, graylings and freshwater whitefishes.

Salmonids include over 200 species, which have a high economic value because of their taste and famed sporting qualities.

The genus Salmo is widely distributed in rivers and streams of basins of the Marmara, Black, Aegean and Mediterranean seas. The genus is represented by 12 species in Turkey.

The new species is distinguished from the other members of genera by having fewer parr marks along lateral line, and a larger mouth gape and maxilla, which is a part of the fish jaw. not much required for "new species" in non-human animals

Although salmonids commonly live in mountain lakes, headwater and upper reaches of streams and rivers, some species spend long parts of their lives in the sea but return to the rivers and streams for reproduce. This migratory lifestyle is known as anadromous. Salmonids are predatory fishes feeding on small crustaceans, aquatic insects and also small fish.

In order to understand the rich genus diversity in Turkey, samples were collected from more than 200 localities throughout the country between 2004 and 2014. The paper, published in the open access journal ZooKeys, focuses only on the Salmo species distributed in the Alakır Stream drainage, from where the new species was described.

The new species Salmo kottelati is named for Maurice Kottelat, who contributed to the knowledge of the fish fauna of Europe and Asia.

The new species inhabits cold and clear water, with moderate current, and gravel and pebble substrate. Its maximum known body length is 21 cm, while the largest representative of the family can reach up to 2 m in length.

Oldest fish on record caught off Albany

The record-breaking fish was a bottom-dwelling Bight redfish, like this one.

Commercial fisherman Tony Little caught WA's oldest fish on record in the deep waters of Two People's Canyon, off the coast of Albany.

The 84-year-old female Bight redfish (Centroberyx gerrardi), caught in November 2013, surpassed the state's previous record of 78 years, held jointly by the Western foxfish (Bodianus frenchii) and bass groper (Polyprion americanus).

The fish was caught as part of an $850,000 stock assessment project for the South Coast's scalefish fisheries, run by the Department of Fisheries (DOF) and Murdoch University's Centre for Fish and Fisheries Research (CFFR), funded by the State Natural Resource Management Office.

"In 2013 we aged about 18,000 fish at our Finfish Ageing Laboratory," DOF researcher Jeffrey Norris says.

"It puts us in an excellent position to make judgements about the health of WA marine fish stocks."

The laboratory receives filleted fish frames or skeletons from fish processors throughout the South Coast, using the otoliths—or ear bones—to determine the age of individual fish and thus the age distribution across fish populations.

The CFFR's Dr Peter Coulson is in charge of ageing the fish.

"The otolith... is removed and embedded in resin," he says.

"When the resin is set, we use a low-speed saw with a diamond-tip blade to cut a transverse section we can put under a microscope.

If that fish is large enough to not have had a natural enemy for 84 years, I'd hate to see how small every other of its food chain candidates are. I wonder how tough that meat must be.
