I was out with the dogs playing the tennis ball game and took refuge for a moment on a rock beside a piece of rotting wood. When I moved the wood, this little guy staggered out......

He appeared extremely lethargic... was around 65 today, so colder in the hole he came out of....
I brought his little self inside and he has grown more active while at the same time avoiding the light I placed on him (he gots lotta moving room).

I could look him up and all, but curious if anyone has ever been successful raising baby lizards this late in the year? Isn't this late for a hatching or do lizards do that?

He is so stinking tiny.

OK, this one appears it is wearing the same sequence of patterned scales, looks to be about 5 non-color for following 1 color segments.

Nowhere near the head width though, or the spiny looking horns on my Pix back.

Virgin Birth Discovered In The World's Largest Snake

When a mommy snake loves a daddy snake very much, sometimes they make a baby snake. At least, that's what you've been taught. But a twenty-foot two-hundred pound female reticulated python didn't follow the rules, giving birth to six offspring with no help from a male.

Did this snake commit SUICIDE? Brown tree snake was found dead still biting its neck

Quote:
  • The 1.5m Brown Tree snake was found outside a Cairns home on Saturday
  • Matt Hagan from Cairns Snake Catchers was trying to relocate it when he realised the snake had died still latching onto its neck
  • He took the snake to the vet to determine a cause of death, but could only find swelling nears its puncture wounds

Venom library to store poison from Australia's deadliest creatures

Snakes, blue-ringed octopus, spiders, scorpions and platypus among species to be included in Australia’s first dedicated venom storage facility

Australia’s first comprehensive venom “library” is being created in Melbourne, with the country’s deadly snakes, octopus and spiders set to be drained of their venom and stored in containers.

The Victorian Venom Bank is to be established at Museum Victoria, in a joint initiative between the state government, Melbourne University and the Arthur Rylah Institute.

Opossum peptide antivenom could take on snake bites

An antidote based on a protein found in the blood of opossums could offer an effective low-cost treatment for snake bites, researchers in the US have found.

Venomous snake bites are a serious global problem, especially in developing countries. Recent estimates suggest that about 421,000 incidents occur each year worldwide, causing 20,000 deaths. However, the World Health Organization notes that these figures may be as high as 1.8 million incidents and 94,000 deaths.

But treatments are costly and inaccessible for many people. Most antivenoms are made by injecting dilute venom into a mammal, such as a horse or rabbit. This results in an immune response, and the animal’s serum is then processed so that it can be injected into snakebite victims to scavenge toxic molecules in their blood. Such treatments typically cost $100-150 (£60-100) per dose, a prohibitive price for many people in developing countries.

But a team led by Claire Komives from San Jose State University has identified a protein from the blood of opossums – animals known for their ability to survive snake bites – that can be produced in large quantities by engineered bacteria, and shows promise as an antivenom.

We May Have Snakes To Thank For Our Acute Vision

Next time you run into an African bush viper like this one, be thankful for your forward-facing eyes.

In a new paper published in the journal Primates, author William C. McGrew, a former professor of evolutionary primatology at the University of Cambridge, reports a high rate of venomous snake encounters by his team of primatologists seeking to observe unhabituated wild chimpanzees in Mount Assirik, Senegal, West Africa.

McGrew's snake-encounter analysis in the paper Snakes as hazards: modelling risk by chasing chimpanzees is one test of what's known as the snake-detection theory of primate origins, a set of hypotheses that suggest we (along with other primates) owe certain features of our evolution to the risks posed by death and injury from snakes.

Another rare, venomous sea serpent washes ashore in Southern California

For the third time in recent months, a rare venomous sea snake has washed up on a Southern California beach, hundreds of miles from its normal waters.

The 20-inch-long yellow-bellied serpent was found about 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at Dog Beach in Coronado by a passerby who alerted lifeguards, Coronado city officials said in a statement. The lifeguard put the snake in a bucket, where it died soon afterward, officials said.

Researchers Capture 43 Pythons Weighing More Than 1 Ton in Florida

Following the monthlong Burmese Python removal competition designed to remove as many of the snakes from the Everglades as possible, there still remains an inordinate amount of pythons. Researchers who have been tracking Burmese pythons captured more than one ton over the last three months in southwest Florida.

Among the 43 pythons removed, researchers found the largest male python ever documented in south Florida, measuring 16 feet and weighing more than 140 pounds.

Almost All Snakes Have The Same, Mindboggling Superpower

When a snake strikes, it moves so fast it could hit you four times within the space of one eyeblink. If a human moved that fast they would lose consciousness

Lying camouflaged amid the deserts and grasslands of southern California, the western diamondback rattlesnake is one of the most patient predators in the world.

The European viper uses cloak-and-dazzle to escape predators

May 22, 2020

Research of the University of Jyväskylä demonstrates that the characteristic zig-zag pattern on a viper's back performs seemingly opposing functions during a predation event. At first, the zig-zag pattern helps the snake remain undetected. But upon exposure, it provides a conspicuous warning of the snake's dangerous defense. Most importantly the zig-zag can also produce an illusionary effect that may hide the snake's movement as it flees. The research, published in Animal Behaviour in May 2020, reveals how a single color pattern can have multiple effects during a predation event, thereby expanding the discussion on protective coloration and anti-predator adaptations.
