Post Amount of Gay and Lesbian TV Characters Growing, GLAAD Study Finds

The picture for lesbian, gay and bisexual people on the silver screen is improving on some channels, two new GLAAD reports find. Yet television still has room to grow, particularly in the diversity of its depictions and its inclusion of transgender characters, the LGBT organization said.

On Wednesday, GLAAD released two annual reports tracking the inclusion of LGBT characters and content on television programming. The first, the Network Responsibility Index, grades broadcast and cable networks – both quantitatively and qualitatively – on the prime-time programming hours each season that feature LGBT characters or discussion of LGBT themes.

(Note: GLAAD changed the methodology for tracking broadcast programming between the 2012-2013 season and the 2013-2014 season. The organization now looks look only at first-run programming and not reruns, in order to make broadcast networks more comparable to their cable counterparts.)

For the first time in the Network Responsibility Index’s eight years of existence, GLAAD doled out three “Excellent" grades – the highest of its four levels – to MTV, ABC Family and HBO. Meanwhile, for the second year in a row, GLAAD gave the History Channel a failing grade, along with A&E and TNT, for including almost no LGBT-related content in prime-time programming.

GLAAD also released its 19th annual Where We Are on TV survey, which counts the number of LGBT characters on broadcast, prime-time, scripted programming in the upcoming season. Nearly 4 percent (3.9 percent) of broadcast prime-time regulars will fall under the LGBT umbrella this coming season – up from 3.3 percent last year – with Fox, NBC and CBS in particular growing their rosters since last year.

GLAAD further broke down TV's LGBT characters by race and gender.

However, no broadcast show will feature a transgender character in the new season, and GLAAD praised the networks’ Internet streaming counterparts for making strides on this front with the inclusion of trans characters on shows like Netflix’s "Orange Is the New Black" and Amazon’s "Transparent." On conventional TV, only ABC Family's "The Fosters" is expected to include a transgender regular character in its upcoming season. In the future, networks will be required to include trans content to achieve top grades, GLAAD said.

In addition to sexuality, the Where We Are on TV report also looked at television representation by gender, race and characters with disabilities. Both full reports can be found here.

There seem to be queers in each and every sitcom and soap opera, along with the requisite niggers.

The thing is so bad that in the other day i was casually watching a movie and was thinking to myself "a movie without niggers, spicks, homos and jews? WTF is going on?"

when you sit around with your buddies and play make believe, and you say 'I'm going to play policeman and you guys play robbers', that is what theatre is.

Just accept the fact that it is inherently somewhat gay.

Just like when you get together with your buddies and put a tutu on and prance around doing flying scissors kicks, it's a tad gay. But it is entertaining.

Nothing wrong with these things if you are super good at them.

So imagination is homosexuality. Please don't tell us what you think of reading books.

The sitcom "The New Normal" (two gay fathers raising a daughter) got me so mad.

Mental note: Do NOT drop the soap in front of this "guy."

'GLAAD' should be classed as a criminal organisation and shut down.

The only thing that'll be coming out next is the woodchippers. Screw gassing the jew writers and fag actors/ dyke actresses.

It's already been established that the "Human Rights Campaign" and the B'nai B'rith shared the same building in Washington DC.
