‘Captain Underpants’ spinoff yanked amid crackdown on supposed anti-Asian ‘passive racism’ in children’s books

29 Mar, 2021 22:21 / Updated 1 day ago

The writer of popular children’s series Captain Underpants has run afoul of the woke brigades. Author Dav Pilkey has been forced to apologize for “harmful racial stereotypes” about Asians supposedly found in a 2010 series spinoff.

Pilkey has begged forgiveness for “The Adventures of Ook and Gluk: Kung-Fu Cavemen from the Future,” a book he wrote in 2010 that “intended to showcase diversity, equality, and non-violent conflict resolution,” on Sunday as his publisher Scholastic announced the book was being pulled from store shelves.

Apologizing that the book, a spinoff of his hugely popular Captain Underpants series, “contains harmful racial stereotypes” that are “wrong and harmful to [his] Asian readers,” Pilkey apologized for the story’s “passively racist imagery.” Clearly fantastical in nature, the narrative tracks two friends from 500,001 BC to 2222 AD, where they meet a martial arts teacher and learn kung fu and Chinese philosophy.

I've never heard of "Captain Underpants" before, I'm not sure what to make of this.

The Root accused of racism after piece by New York Times contributor declares 'Whiteness is a Pandemic'

Damon Young has not been published by paper since July of last year

By Joseph A. Wulfsohn | Fox News

The digital magazine The Root was accused of racism Wednesday after publishing an article declaring "Whiteness is a Pandemic" in response to Tuesday's deadly shootings in Georgia.

There was a rush to conclude that the shootings that killed eight people at three Atlanta-area massage parlors were hate crimes after officials confirmed that six of the eight victims were Asian-Americans. Investigators said Wednesday that the suspected gunman, 21-year-old Robert Long, told them he was motivated by a "sexual addiction". They added that racism "did not appear to be the motive". Long has since been charged with multiple counts of murder and assault.

In the piece, Root senior editor Damon Young argued that "Whiteness" is a "public health crisis."
(...)
Young, whose bio describes him as a contributing opinion writer for The New York Times, added that "a line can and should be drawn from the actions of the white [sic] supremacist" in Georgia "to the relentless anti-Asian rhetoric pollinating national discourse over the past year," insisting former President Donald Trump and the GOP "can and should be blamed for this and the sudden increase of racist violence against Asian Americans."

Here's yet another example of how a jewish media outlet uses the Atlanta spa shootings to attack white people and defend China:

Why anti-Asian American violence is rising -- along with White supremacist propaganda

Opinion by John Avlon

Updated 2010 GMT (0410 HKT) March 18, 2021

(CNN) - We don't yet know exactly what motivated the alleged killer of eight people at Atlanta area spas on Tuesday night, six of whom were Asian American women.

But we do know that hate crimes against Asian Americans have been on the rise since the start of the Covid pandemic in the US.

It's a fact that the first outbreak of Covid-19 was reported in Wuhan, China. But pandemics don't care about race or politics or even national borders. That doesn't stop racial scapegoating. We saw a variation on the theme during the 1918 influenza epidemic, which some labeled the "Spanish flu" -- and which is actually believed to have generated from a US Army base in Kansas -- when immigrants and Native Americans were baselessly blamed for spreading the disease in western US cities.

That's why there was a pushback on attempts to label this pandemic the China Flu -- or "Kung-Flu" -- by President Donald Trump, members of his administration, and allies in right wing media. The point wasn't political correctness run amuck -- it was an awareness of the ugly impulses it could unleash.

We've seen too many contemporary examples of extreme rhetoric leading to violence. The El Paso shooter -- who killed 22 and wounded 24 others who were shopping at a local Walmart -- told investigators he drove 11 hours so he could target Mexicans, echoing extremist talking points about a "Hispanic invasion."
(...)
But these impulses rarely incubate in a vacuum -- and we have seen anti-immigrant and anti-Asian sentiments stirred up in our society, especially in recent months.

According to an analysis by the Anti-Defamation League, anti-Asian American hostility and conspiracy theories spiked 85% on Twitter in the 12 hours after Trump's Covid diagnosis.

Hate speech has been a growing problem in the USA, with a new report from the ADL showing that white supremacist propaganda nearly doubled in 2020 to the highest levels they've ever recorded. Much of it featured "White supremacist language with a patriotic slant" in an effort to "normalize white supremacist message and bolster recruitment while targeting minority groups."

Opinion: Anti-Asian racism is a product of white supremacist norms that must be eliminated

The anti-Asian narrative perpetuated by white supremacists has increased hate crimes against the Asian American community

By Analisa Valdez | 03/22/2021 7:25pm

(...) Following the shootings in Atlanta, law enforcement has dismissed the elements of racism and sexism obviously present in the attacks as consequences of "a really bad day." This is a symptom of the wide acceptance and normalization of white supremacist ideology in America that needs to end.

No matter how people try to justify these attacks, they are, at their core, racist and stem from a long history of white supremacy and nationalism that needs to be confronted and deconstructed in order to create an America that embraces and empowers Asian Americans, rather than attack and blame.
(...)
“There has been a tendency to target different Asian ethnicities throughout the United States history,” said Karen J. Leong, an associate professor of women and gender studies and Asian Pacific American studies in the School of Social Transformation. “It’s never been one monolithic anti-Asian narrative. It’s taken on different forms and specificites based on the particular moment.”

Phrases former President Donald Trump used, such as the "China Virus" and the "Kung Flu" were not only used to place blame for COVID-19 on China, but also constructed a negative narrative in which ongoing racism against Asian Americans had room to grow.
(...)
Leong said another function of white supremacy is the idea of white masculinity protecting white femininity in America. This is often used by white males to justify racist crimes against people of color, and has played a part in the rise in violence against Asian Americans, she said.

“Anti-Asian racism is linked structurally to white supremacy and often to cis white hetero patriarchy, which really is about this very normative idea of heterosexual families, led by the authority of white males,” Leong said.

Yelp launches tool to make it easier to support Asian-owned restaurants

Yelp searches for Asian-owned businesses increased 130% in February 2021, according to the company.

April 6, 2021, 11:06 PM CEST / Source: TODAY
By Alyssa Newcomb

Yelp is rolling out a new tool that makes it easier for people to find and support Asian-owned businesses during a time of a rise in attacks against Asians and Pacific Islanders in the U.S.

Business owners will be able to decide whether they want to list "Asian-owned" as one of the attributes of their establishment. The new setting can be found under the diversity attributes section of a business page. Yelp also includes options for businesses that are Black, Latinx or women-owned.

The decision to opt in is entirely up to the business owner. Yelp is launching the new feature in partnership with Gold House, a nonprofit focused on inclusivity and representation of Asian and Pacific Islanders.

"Over the last year we’ve seen arise in interest from consumers looking to support Asian business owners on Yelp as the rate of searches for Asian-owned businesses in the U.S. increased by 130 percent in February 2021 compared to the same period the year prior," Jeremy Stoppelman, co-founder and CEO of Yelp, said in a blog post. "Patronizing Asian-owned businesses is one small step we can all take to drive meaningful change and create lasting impact."

White supremacy and hate are haunting Asian Americans

Analysis by Stephen Collinson, CNN

Updated 1232 GMT (2032 HKT) March 18, 2021

(CNN) - In one sense, it's immaterial whether the accused killer in the Atlanta spa shootings admits to a racist motivation. Asian Americans, already traumatized by a rising tide of hate, violence and rhetoric, have been living in fear for months.

The murders of eight people, including six Asian women, among them four South Koreans, further disoriented and horrified a community already unfairly stigmatized by racial association during a pandemic that originated in China. And they laid bare for the rest of the country the agony of yet another minority group left to question its place in America, at a time of rising attacks and harassment amid cresting White nationalism and domestic extremism.

Many Asian Americans feel exposed by a torrent of dangerous and racially motivated rhetoric by national figures on a cultural crusade. Most prominently that includes ex-President Donald Trump, who presided over four years of rising racial tensions and often used division as a tool of personal power.

Campaigners talk of a perfect storm of prejudice targeting the Asian American and Pacific Islander community that stirred latent hatreds as Covid-19 first arrived in the US, and was exacerbated by Trump's relish in flinging around terms like "China virus."

Councilwoman apologizes for quoting convicted NJ cop-killer

A Connecticut city councilwoman has apologized for quoting a cop-killing fugitive wanted by the FBI during a meeting on International Women’s Day.

“A revolutionary woman can’t have no reactionary man,” Danielle Wong said, citing Joanne Chesimard, a former member of the Black Liberation Army who was convicted in the first-degree murder of a New Jersey state trooper in 1973.

Wong, a councilwoman in Bloomfield, made the contentious reference to Chesimard, also known as Assata Shakur, during a March 8 council meeting.

A History of Anti-Asian Hate in the United States

SOLIDARITY AGAINST HATRED

MARCH 25, 2021
BY LALEH ISPAHANI & KAVITA NANDINI RAMDAS

Last week, a white man targeted three Asian-run massage parlors in the Atlanta region, and killed eight people. Six of the victims were Asian women. We must never forget their names: Soon Chung Park (74), Hyun Jung Grant (51), Suncha Kim (69), Yong Ae Yue (63), Delaina Ashley Yaun (33), Xiaojie Tan (49) and Daoyou Feng (44). The victims were disproportionately older Asian women. They were sisters, mothers, and grandmothers—and all people who worked in low-wage jobs.

As two South Asian immigrant women living in the United States, these attacks are sadly familiar and hit home. These shootings, along with the marginalization of women by the junta in Myanmar, and the rise of gender-based violence in India and Latin America this past year, underscore a broader global crisis we all find ourselves in today.

While many in the media and law enforcement were quick to flatten the Atlanta shooter’s story to one motive, they ignored the most toxic intersecting factors plaguing society today and contributing to rampant violence: white supremacy, misogyny, permissive gun culture, and classism.

Last year, former President Donald Trump reinforced white supremacist narratives with his insinuations about the origins of COVID-19, which he termed “Chinese Virus.” Experts warned that his dehumanizing and xenophobic rhetoric would exacerbate the possibility of violent attacks in the midst of a global pandemic.

I'm surprised the chinks haven't complained about Charlie Chan movies being racist since the actors who played him were all White. Or maybe they did complain already and I just missed it.

Orientals are a forgotten threat to Aryan people and that cannot be overlooked, anyway.

It is Blacks targeting Orientals. Of course the lying media never mention the perp's actual race. it's all Whitey's fault because of slavery, holohoax, etc..

it seems to me that most Asians are believing the fake news and White people attacked them. despite their high IQ why can't they see the truth? why don't they bother to do some research on the topic themselves like we do, so they can separate the fact from fiction?
I think it's because they are unable to think outside the box, mostly due to their collectivistic cultural upbringing. and partly due to their genetics.

Collectivism eliminates one's ability to think for themselves.
