On the other hand, they say that Trump did so much harm, and made immigration so heated an issue, that it will be a challenge just to bring the immigration and refugee systems back to where they were before Trump. Returning to a point in which the U.S. allows hundreds of thousands of refugees a year, and passing immigration reform through Congress, these leaders say, feels even more daunting.

A Finnish court has sentenced an Iraqi migrant to four years in prison after being convicted of several crimes when he married a 13-year-old girl in Iraq and brought her to Finland in 2014.

The Iraqi-background man, who is 30-years-old, was convicted of aggravated rape, sexual abuse of a child, and human trafficking for incidents that took place between May and July of 2014.

The man had made attempts to claim that he did not know the true age of the girl when he married her but a court of appeal in Turku rejected his story, broadcaster Yle reports.

During the case, the National Institute for Health and Welfare carried out forensic tests on the girl, including x-rays of her teeth and hands, to determine her true age.

Italy to resume migrant evacuations from Libya

UNHCR chief Filippo Grandi says Italy has promised to resume evacuations of the most vulnerable migrants and refugees from Libya. Evacuations were reduced due to the pandemic.

The UN High Commissioner for Refugees, Filippo Grandi, said on Friday (April 16) that he had been reassured by the Italian government that the evacuation of the most vulnerable migrants and refugees would resume from Libya.

Speaking during a visit to Rome, the UN official said the Italian government has provided "positive assurance that all types of evacuations of the most vulnerable migrants and refugees will resume, both directed to Italy and through other African countries."

There are two investigations in Italy, looking in to the delayed disembarking of migrants involving former Interior Minister Matteo Salvini as defendant. The cases are now being heard by preliminary investigative judges in Sicily.

The second concerns the Gregoretti ship, and is being heard in Catania in eastern Sicily. In this case, the preliminary investigative judge Nunzio Sarpietro is expected to announce his decision on May 14.

Over 100 illegal migrants reached Britain by boat on Tuesday, as figures from the Home Office revealed that less than one per cent of illegal aliens have been prosecuted over the past five years.

The migrant crisis in the English Channel shows no signs of abating, as seven boats carrying 113 illegals were brought to land at the Port of Dover on Tuesday.

A further four boats carrying 72 people being stopped by French authorities, the BBC’s Simon Jones reported.

So far this year, over 1,500 migrants have been recorded to have reached British shores. Theoretically, if crossings continue as they have, the year could be on pace to see 25,000 migrants cross the Channel from France illegally, three times as many reached in the year before the UK officially left the European Union.

More that 120 migrants found in Udine, northeastern Italy

A large number of migrants, including children, were discovered on a road in northeastern Italy last week. Most of the migrants were Pakistani nationals who had traveled the "Balkan route."

Italian security forces found 121 migrants overnight between Friday and Saturday in the hinterland north of the city of Udine near the Slovenian border.

Around 68 people, including four women and eight children – almost all Pakistani nationals with a few Nepalese and Eritreans among them – were found over the course of a few hours by police while walking along the Osovana provincial road in Pagnacco and Tavagnacco near Udine.

The remaining 53 migrants found in the same area included a number of Bangladeshi nationals.

German Courts Ban ‘Lateral Thinking’ Anti-Lockdown Protests

Protests against coronavirus lockdowns in Germany, known as the “Querdenker” or “lateral thinking” movement, have been barred from gathering by regional courts in the country.

Bavaria’s Administrative Court ruled late Friday evening that demonstrations against Germany’s lockdown should be banned under the pretext of slowing the spread of the Chinese virus.

Saxony Higher Administrative Court followed suit, citing the existence of variants of the coronavirus and the belief that demonstrators could not feasibly abide by social-distancing diktats, according to the German public broadcaster Deutsche Welle.

The decision from the court has been made unappealable and applies to all demonstrations. The court, which presides over the city of Dresden, also prohibited a planned protest by the right-wing populist party Alternative for Germany (AfD).

The Querdenker anti-lockdown movement — which has been accused by German intelligence of having been infiltrated by extremists — has staged large-scale protests against the coronavirus restrictions, drawing some 20,000 people in the Saxony city of Leipzig in November.

Later that month, police in Berlin deployed water cannons to disperse an anti-lockdown protest at the German capital’s Brandenburg Gate landmark.

Police in Frankfurt also used water cannons to disperse Antifa radicals who attempted to shut down the Querdenker protest, which they claimed was spreading “Nazi propaganda”.

More than 18,000 migrant and refugee children missing in Europe

Between 2018 and 2020, more than 18,000 unaccompanied foreign minors were registered in Europe. A journalists' collective called "Lost in Europe" says the children are at high risk of exploitation.

"Lost in Europe", a network of journalists which includes The Guardian, the Dutch broadcaster VPRO and Germany's RBB says that 18,292 unaccompanied refugee children and adolescents disappeared from state care across Europe between 2018 and 2020.

According to a report by RBB on the Lost in Europe investigation, Verena Keck, from the international children's rights organization ECPAT, says the actual number of missing migrant children is significantly higher. Keck blames the lack of a uniform Europe-wide system for registering missing persons. "This can have fatal consequences for children and adolescent, as they can get into exploitative situations and addiction," she said. "If nobody knows about these children… nobody looks for them."

"Famille au grand cœur," an association run by a group of refugees and asylum seekers, is setting up in Montpellier in the south of France. The collective aims to offer welcome and support to young new arrivals who are gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender.

In Montpellier, 12 asylum seekers and refugees from Mali, Guinea, Senegal, Nigeria, Liberia, Morocco and Armenia have recently joined forces. All of them arrived in France in the last few years after having to flee their countries of origin because they belong to the LGBT community (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender). 520 Afghan translators may be offered protection in Germany

As Germany prepares to pull its military out of Afghanistan, the country’s defense minister says she could be prepared to offer protection to up to 520 Afghan translators and their families.

Germany's defense minister, Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer, is thinking about the future. Along with other western allied forces under NATO, including the USA, Germany is preparing to withdraw its military presence from Afghanistan by mid-August, after nearly 20 years working in the country.

Currently, according to the news agency Associated Press (AP), Germany has about 1,000 troops in service in Afghanistan and employs about 300 Afghans locally. The question is whether some of those employees will be in danger when Germany leaves.

Kramp-Karrenbauer told the German news agency dpa that she wants to make sure that they face no danger as Germany pulls out. "We are talking here about people who in some cases have worked for years by our side, at danger to their own safety, also have fought with us and made their personal contribution," she said.

COVID: Italy starts distributing J&J vaccine

(ANSA) - ROME, APR 21 - Italy is starting to distribute a batch of 184,000 doses of Johnson & Johnson's Janssen COVID-19 vaccine to its regions on Wednesday. Like the AstraZeneca jab, the Italian authorities are recommending the Johnson & Johnson vaccine only be given to over-60s after the European Medicines Agency (EMA) said it could be linked to some highly rare cases of blood clots in younger people.

The EMA also stressed that the benefits of the vaccine outweighed the risks.

The batch had been put into storage at a military airport near Rome, pending the EMA's verdict.

Denmark raises the bar on citizenship

Denmark plans to tighten the conditions for citizenship, after a deal struck between the government and three opposition parties. The country already has one of the most restrictive immigration policies in Europe.

The Danish government announced on Tuesday that it is tightening the conditions for naturalization, excluding people who have been convicted of crimes. The new rules follow an agreement reached between the Social Democrat government of Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and three right-wing opposition parties.

"Obtaining Danish citizenship is a great declaration of faith from Danish society, according to the parties to the deal. They are therefore in agreement that it is necessary to raise the bar for who can become a Danish citizen," the migration ministry said in a statement.

In future, applicants for Danish citizenship will have to show that they have had no criminal convictions and that they have been employed for at least three-and-a-half of the last four years.

The agreement also puts a strong emphasis on "Danish values." Citizenship tests, which have been used since 2015, will now include five questions on these values.

UNICEF and Save the Children said that in the four months that their joint border program has been active, they have provided assistance to more than 130 families and 570 unaccompanied minors in Ventimiglia and Lampedusa.

UNICEF and Save the Children highlighted that they will continue working together to offer humanitarian support to refugee and migrant children, adolescents and families.

The two organizations said that in four months of a joint program to provide assistance at the borders, which ran from December 2020 to March 2021, they have assisted more than 130 families and 570 unaccompanied minors who arrived in Ventimiglia - at the northern border with France - and on the Sicilian island of Lampedusa.

The organizations have renewed their joint collaboration to last until at least the end of this year 2021. Their programs will support minor migrants arriving through the Central Mediterranean route and the Balkan route, with teams in Lampedusa and Ventimiglia.
