You are correct sir. "Toe the line" is a proper phrase with a long history.
Just wondering if I should soak my hat in beer of milk before I eat it.

Nope. I knew the distinction, and somewhere it got lost on me for precisely the reason you posted - I took the analogy to be a tugboat pulling a freighter. But that's not where the expression comes from. In fact, it's not clear where 'toe the line' originated, but it is the correct expression.

CINCINNATI (AP) — An Ohio teacher has been fired after a black student who said he wanted to become president claimed the teacher told him the nation didn't need another black commander in chief.

The Fairfield Board of Education voted 4-0 on Thursday night to fire science teacher Gil Voigt from Fairfield Freshman School, according to The Cincinnati Enquirer (http://cin.ci/1kIkFmQ ).

"The district felt that the evidence was sufficient to support the termination of Mr. Voigt's employment," Superintendent Paul Otten said in statement.

Voigt did not immediately return a call seeking comment Friday but has said the student misquoted him.

Voigt, who is white, told school officials that what he actually told the teen was that he doesn't think the nation can afford another president like Barack Obama, "whether he's black or white."

[this doesn't precisely fit this thread, but i'll put it here: how to profit off old 'racist' material while removing the 'racism']

How Disney's New 'Jungle Book' Can Overcome Book's Racist Baggage
By Amanda Bell
April 25, 2014 5:17 PM

King Louie of the Apes, right, in 'The Jungle Book,' 1967 (Everett Collection/Walt Disney Studios)

Of all the films Disney has dug out of its classics collection closet for the live-action reboot treatment, "The Jungle Book" is by far the most likely to cause the studio worries and strife — as Baloo the Bear might chime.

Both Rudyard Kipling's original book, which was written from a British colonialist perspective, and Disney's own animated adaptation have long been slammed for having racist overtones. If the studio hopes to overcome these perceptions and offer up a 21st century-friendly rendition this go-round, it'll take a whole lot more work than just punching up the old material with snazzy costumes and new-age visual effects.

"One of the main reasons that 'The Jungle Book' needs to be rebooted is to fix the things that became controversial not long after it was released in 1967," Robert Thompson, pop culture expert and media professor at Syracuse University, tells Yahoo Movies.

By giving the green light to the new incarnation, hiring Jon Favreau to direct, and tapping a diverse group of A-listers to star – recent Oscar winner Lupita Nyong'o ("12 Years a Slave") and Scarlett Johansson ("Avengers: Age of Ultron") are in talks to join Idris Elba ("Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom") on the developing cast list – Thompson suspects Disney is up to the task and must believe the material "is salvageable."

So, what are some of the "Bare Necessities" of a "Jungle Book" overhaul?

"The first Disney 'Jungle Book' was based on Kipling; the next one will be based on the movie, so it'll be another generation removed from Kipling, which will help," Thompson says.

Stepping away from Kipling's imperialist vision is, however, just the beginning, especially since it was one of the House of Mouse's own story concoctions which caused the most discontent over their first adaptation.

The cartoon's King Louie (which did not stem from the pages of Kipling's original) was a jazzy ape whose language skills were considered much less refined than those of the film's other animals and who sang "I Wanna Be Like You" to the orphaned human boy Mowgli. The character is widely panned as exemplifying "negative racial stereotyping" and connoting inequality between African-Americans and Caucasians.

While filmmakers initially tried to sidestep perceptions of racism with King Louie by casting an Italian-American singer (Louis Prima) in the role rather than Louis Armstrong, whom the part was originally written for, the character still strongly violated the ethos of social progress.

"King Louie was going to be a problem either way," opines Thompson. "The original choice would have been offensive – Louis Armstrong animated as an ape. The choice they went with had a minstrel show feel to it, also offensive."

Simply whitewash-casting the unfortunately caricaturish character wasn't nearly enough to mask the inherent problems with King Louie the first time around, and it certainly will not work for Disney's renewal. Instead, there'll need to be some fundamental adjustments made – though experts caution against a complete disavowal of the banana-loving primate.
.
"The King Louie character can have his speaking mannerisms updated in a way that suggests he speaks in a manner similar to the other characters," Jeffrey M. McCall, Professor of Communication at DePauw University, tells Yahoo Movies. "I don't think the upcoming film needs a total scrubbing, or at some point it would no longer be loyal to the original story. But it can be updated with a keener eye to avoiding stereotypical language or behaviors that could be translatable to ethnic definition."

While Disney might not need to scrap King Louie altogether to progress, his performance of the hot-button scat tune "I Wanna Be Like You" might be ripe for total lyrical retooling, if not removal altogether. One can only imagine the outrage that would invariably follow if lines like "I wanna be like you/I wanna walk like you/Talk like you, too/You'll see it's true/An ape like me/Can learn to be human too" remained intact in the new take. That'd prick a few raw paws for sure.

Meanwhile, another big point of action might be to redress the controversial "Jungle Book" plot point of young Mowgli being told he could not live with Baloo the Bear because different species should keep to themselves. Given the historical framework of the film's mid-'60s release, smack dab in the middle of the U.S. Civil Rights Movement, this was perceived as heavily suggestive of pro-segregation principles. Perhaps Favreau and screenwriter Justin Marks could just conjure up another narrative direction altogether for plucking Mowgli away from the wild to avoid this particularly messy aspect.

It's worth noting that the new "Jungle Book" flick won't just have to overcome the issues of racism plaguing the 1967 animated version. The movie was also quite problematic for those who decried the lack of central female characters (there were just three, and one didn't even speak). With its recent casting decisions, though, it looks like Disney just may have a remedy for that issue by way of some simple swapping.

While Nyong'o's role as the mother wolf Rachka was one of the three femmes included in the original, Johansson's part as the hypnotic python Kaa was originally voiced by a man. (On a similar note of diversification, Idris Elba's role as the villainous tiger Shere Khan belonged to a white actor in the prior version.)

To supplement, if needed, the film could also take a leaf from the playbook of theatrical director Mary Zimmerman, who recently revived "The Jungle Book" for the stage and added in a few new animal characters in order to narrow the gender gap.

Disney's live-action and CGI hybrid re-imagining of "The Jungle Book," one of two modern-day re-tellings of the Rudyard Kipling adventure tale current underway, will hit theaters on Oct. 29, 2015. The other, housed by Warner Bros., will be helmed by Andy Serkis and has no firm release date at this time.

Ousted one-term U.S. Congressman from Illinois Joe Walsh says he's been kicked off his own radio show for trying to have a frank and honest discussion about race in America.

The Tea Party darling was on air Thursday discussing the controversy surrounding the name of the Washington Redskins when he used racial slurs like the N-word and C-word as part of what he says was a thoughtful comparison.

That's when the station cut him off with commercial breaks and they've since cut him off completely from his own show.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/arti...#ixzz35BwjNOuc

Walsh's language apparently included some unsavory slurs, which the 52-year-old husband and father chose to use on Twitter as he stormed away from the radio station.

'Found out if I said Redskins or Cracker or Redneck Bible Thumper, I could stay on. But if I said N***** or S***k, they cut me off,' he wrote.

Walsh then revealed to his followers that he would be off the air at least until Friday, when he was slated for a 5pm meeting with his producers concerning the incident.

It's unclear what their decision on the delicate matter will be, but what is known is that Walsh's show is very popular at the Chicago station.

In fact, The Answer website says that the former lawmaker's show was expanded to a three hour time slot just a few months after its debut.

'The only complaint was from Joe,' program director Marcus Brown said in 2013. 'He had more to say than we could fit into two hours, so we’re adding an extra hour and are moving his show to drive time in Chicago

'Joe isn’t just a rising star in talk radio. He’s a meteor, and his potential for success in this business is enormous.'

Whether it is semitically correct is debatable. This former Jewish Daily Forward editor thinks so ("only 70 years after the Shoah")

http://blogs.timesofisrael.com/one-g...tant-question/

On the other hand, the FAZ said the #Gauchotanz destroyed "the image of Germany as a cosmopolitan, tolerant nation" though, I suspect, this is just tabloid sensationalism from a formerly respectable newspaper.

Fagball is quite appropriate. The guy in the first video is probably less gay than most footballers today. Compare and contrast with this 1935 team

You could probably update that thread with all this WC stuff.

Sweden Democrats Barred From Union Posts

Nearly half of Swedish trade union confederations bar Sweden Democrats from taking official positions, according to a report published on Monday.

An investigation by newspaper Dagens Nyheter (DN) published on Monday found that many trade unions forbid members of the Sweden Democrat party (Sverigedemokraterna, SD) from taking official positions — which are otherwise elected offices.

While one union chairman said unions which do not do so are “weak”, a political scientist said the situation presents a challenge for democracy.

Note to World: Discussing Demographics is Now Racist

I am looking a little closer into the alleged "racist" remarks of Atlanta Hawks owner Bruce Levenson. Here is what he wrote in an email that is supposedly "racist":
Regarding game ops, i need to start with some background. for the first couple of years we owned the team, i didn't much focus on game ops. then one day a light bulb went off. when digging into why our season ticket base is so small, i was told it is because we can't get 35-55 white males and corporations to buy season tixs and they are the primary demo for season tickets around the league. when i pushed further, folks generally shrugged their shoulders. then i start looking around our arena during games and notice the following:

-- it's 70 pct black
-- the cheerleaders are black
-- the music is hip hop
-- at the bars it's 90 pct black
-- there are few fathers and sons at the games
-- we are doing after game concerts to attract more fans and the concerts are either hip hop or gospel.

Then i start looking around at other arenas. It is completely different. Even DC with its affluent black community never has more than 15 pct black audience.

Before we bought the hawks and for those couple years immediately after in an effort to make the arena look full (at the nba's urging) thousands and thousands of tickets were being giving away, predominantly in the black community, adding to the overwhelming black audience.

My theory is that the black crowd scared away the whites and there are simply not enough affluent black fans to build a signficant season ticket base. Please dont get me wrong. There was nothing threatening going on in the arean back then. i never felt uncomfortable, but i think southern whites simply were not comfortable being in an arena or at a bar where they were in the minority. On fan sites i would read comments about how dangerous it is around philips yet in our 9 years, i don't know of a mugging or even a pick pocket incident. This was just racist garbage. When I hear some people saying the arena is in the wrong place I think it is code for there are too many blacks at the games.

I have been open with our executive team about these concerns. I have told them I want some white cheerleaders and while i don't care what the color of the artist is, i want the music to be music familiar to a 40 year old white guy if that's our season tixs demo. i have also balked when every fan picked out of crowd to shoot shots in some time out contest is black. I have even bitched that the kiss cam is too black.

Gradually things have changed. My unscientific guess is that our crowd is 40 pct black now, still four to five times all other teams. And my further guess is that 40 pct still feels like 70 pet to some whites at our games. Our bars are still overwhelmingly black.
This is obviously a sensitive topic, but sadly i think it is far and way the number one reason our season ticket base is so low.

And many of our black fans don't have the spendable income which explains why our f&b and merchandise sales are so low. At all white thrasher games sales were nearly triple what they are at hawks games (the extra intermission explains some of that but not all).
Levenson is simply talking demographics here and what will improve season ticket sales and food & beverage sales. I can't imagine any business in the world that doesn't attempt to identify what demographic makes sense for them to go after and result in the most profit.

Levenson has absolutely no reason in the world to be a public relations agency for the black community or cater to blacks, if it is less profitable to do so.

Are Las Vegas casinos racist against blacks and whites because they go out of their way to target Asian "whale" gamblers? Of course, not. The idea is absurd.

I would like to see NBA head office demographic studies and see if they target certain groups. They would be incompetent if they didn't. And they don't appear to me to be incompetent marketers. When they sell rights to national games to various television networks do they provide demographics as part of their sales pitch? Of course, they do.

-RW

Default Ukraine-born pianist's Toronto concert cancelled over pro-Russia remarks

http://www.theguardian.com/world/201...isitsa-concert

Quote:
Valentina Lisitsa, who has a huge online following, has criticised western journalists for supposed bias in covering events in Ukraine

A pianist has been struck off the concert programme with a Canadian orchestra for expressing her support for pro-Russia separatists in eastern Ukraine.

Valentina Lisitsa, a Ukraine-born pianist, was scheduled to play Rachmaninov’s Piano Concerto No 2 with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra on Friday night, but her performance was scrapped amid “ongoing accusations of deeply offensive language” on Twitter, said the orchestra’s president, Jeff Melanson.

Lisitsa had posted graphic images and angry rhetoric about the conflict in east Ukraine and criticised western journalists for supposed bias in covering the events. Canada has a large Ukrainian diaspora.

“As one of Canada’s most important cultural institutions, our priority must remain on being a stage for the world’s great works of music, and not for opinions that some believe to be deeply offensive,” Melanson said.

Lisitsa said she never posted any threats or anything else illegal and she had not been planning to make any political statement during the concert. She said her Twitter activity was borne of a feeling that the coverage of events in Ukraine had been skewed in favour of the new government in Kiev.

In Toronto, there was mixed reaction to the move. One columnist in the Toronto Star said the ban created a “dangerous precedent” and “has made a mockery of the arts in this city”.

The orchestra initially said it would replace Lisitsa with another pianist, then removed the Rachmaninov concerto from the concert programme altogether.

Lisitsa has a huge online following, and her YouTube videos have viewing figures in the millions. In January she played a Prokofiev piano concerto with the London Symphony Orchestra at the Barbican Centre.

Lisitsa said she planned to give a free concert at a church in Toronto on Friday instead of the official performance. Later, however, she said the performance had been cancelled. She wrote on Twitter: “I feel like I am taking part in some Orwell reenactment. Just wow. Surreal.”
