Default #1 Tradition, a Dubious, Difficult Concept Thread

"Family Tradition"

Country music singers have always been a real close family
But lately some of my kinfolks have disowned a few others and me
I guess it's because I kind of changed my direction
Lord I guess I went and broke their family tradition

They get on me and want to know
Hank, why do you drink? Hank, why do you roll smoke?
Why must you live out the songs that you wrote?
Over and over everybody makes my predictions
So if I get stoned, I'm just carrying on an old family tradition

I am very proud of my daddy's name
All though his kind of music and mine ain't exactly the same
Stop and think it over. Put yourself in my position
If I get stoned and sing all night long it's a family tradition

So don't ask me, Hank why do you drink? Hank, why do you roll smoke?
Why must you live out the songs that you wrote?
If I'm down in a honky-tonk some ole slick's trying to give me friction
I said leave me alone I'm singing all night long it's a family tradition

Lord I have loved some ladies and I have loved Jim Beam
And they both tried to kill me in 1973
When that doctor asked me, Son how did you get in this condition?
I said, hey sawbones, I'm just carrying on an ole family tradition

So don't ask me, Hank, why do you drink? Hank, why do you roll smoke?
Why must you live out the songs that you wrote?
Stop and think it over, try and put yourself in my unique position
If I get stoned and sing all night long, it's a family tradition!

Now, if I were teaching...

What is or are the Williams family and traditions?

Is Jr carrying on Sr's/family traditions or breaking with them? (Trick question, nigger, show me your NUANCE level and DISENTANGLEMENT-CAPACITY)

Abstracting from Williams family specifics, what choices he must make are common to us all?

Luckenbach, Texas

Luckenbach, Texas (Back to the Basics of Love)
Waylon Jennings

The only two things in life that make it worth livin'
Is guitars that tune good and firm feelin' women
I don't need my name in the marquee lights
I got my song and I got you with me tonight
Maybe it's time we got back to the basics of love

Let's go to Luckenbach, Texas
With Waylon and Willie and the boys
This successful life we're livin'
Got us feuding like the Hatfields and McCoys
Between Hank Williams' pain songs and
Newberry's train songs and Blue Eyes Cryin' in the Rain
Out in Luckenbach, Texas ain't nobody feelin' no pain

So baby, let's sell your diamond ring
Buy some boots and faded jeans and go away
This coat and tie is choking me
In your high society you cry all day
We've been so busy keepin' up with the Jones
Four car garage and we're still building on
Maybe it's time we got back to the basics of love

Let's go to Luckenbach, Texas
With Waylon and Willie and the boys
This successful life we're livin' got us feudin'
Like the Hatfield and McCoys
Between Hank Williams' pain songs and
Newberry's train songs and Blue Eyes Cryin' in the Rain
Out in Luckenbach, Texas ain't nobody feelin' no pain

Let's go to Luckenbach, Texas
Willie and Waylon and the boys
This successful life we're livin's got us feudin'
Like the Hatfield and McCoys
Between Hank Williams' pain songs
And Jerry Jeff's train songs and Blue Eyes Cryin' in the Rain
Out in Luckenbach, Texas there ain't nobody feelin' no pain

Hank jr made a career out of singing about his daddys career.
At that point it seemed everyone making country music had to drop a name of another country singer to give their own song validity. They did this to give the appearance of family/friends. We can take soft jabs at one another cause we famlee, to further personalize the music these soft jabs allowed the listener in on personal jokes to make them feel as if they belong.
Here is a classic where Waylon takes a soft jab at willie as a way of establishing hierarchy of values in the country music family.
On one hand there is a sense of humble and yet on the other hand, if you give friction to willie, we will kick your ass. Don't presume to tell us what are values are. We decide our values, and we and only we can make joke about it.
If this link don't work the song is Bob Wills is still the king.

What is or are the Williams family and traditions?

The Williams family values are "Do not question our family values."
...or, do not question me because to do so is to question my daddy, ...even if we lay around all day drunk and stoned making little jingles, ya'll wouldn't have nuthin to listen to.

Also present here when asking hank why he is useless drunk, is the idea that no sober normal thinking man has anything if artistic significance to say.
We see this in most art forms today, that the weird and mentally unstable are the ones that see truth. Hank basically admits he is nothing with out drink and weed and says as much about his daddy.

Musicians are weirdoes, scum, and degenerates, with very few exceptions.

Junior Hank is following the family tradition of making country music, but putting his own spin on it, which is good. But he's also carrying on the tradition of substance abuse, which is not good, his father drank himself to death. Sometimes "traditions" are just bad habits that shouldn't be carried on.

What are the basics of love?
Why Luckenbach?
Success: not having to constantly 'keep up' with all the other assholes, or be around them, or seek their approval. Like Alfalfa said, 'Go where u wanna go do what u wanna do.'

Yes, probs $ can't solve and $ can't touch. Happiness with self, fambly issues from ones past, "why am I here?" thinking that plagues all humans (I sometimes wonder if chimps or fish wonder same and we just don't know it).

Basics of love: goes back to the 'keep up' thing, because basics of love are finding who and what you care about and investing life into it.
It's also biologically wired in (to love your race for instance) but modern 'cult'ure would tell you otherwise.
Luckenbach: it's near Fredericksburg--if it looks and feels like Fredericksburg then it is a beautiful town with an old Germanic village feel, away from the anxiety inducing rest of the world. 'Back to basics'.

There's more one could say on all that but I think I nailed this assignment.

Hooch n' Jebus both qualify for the 'throw away' pile.
