The arrival of three asylum seeker boats in the first week of the New Year continues to demonstrate Labor's failed policy on border protection, the federal opposition says.

In the latest incident, a boat carrying 119 suspected asylum seekers and two crew was intercepted off the West Australian coast on Saturday morning.

HMAS Maryborough, operating under the control of Border Protection, intercepted the boat about 18.5 nautical miles north of Christmas Island, Australian Customs and Border Protection said.
