Prime Minister Mario Draghi has shot down Vatican concerns that an anti-homophobia bill being examined by Italy’s parliament could undermine church freedoms – with Draghi emphasizing that the country is officially a secular state.

Archbishop Paul Richard Gallagher, Secretary for Relations with States at the Vatican, reportedly sent a letter last week to the Italian Embassy to the Holy See expressing concern that the legislation – under which no schools, including private Catholic schools, would be exempt from participating in a proposed National Day Against Homophobia, Lesbophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia – interferes with the freedom of the Church.

In his letter, Gallagher reportedly pointed towards the 1929 Italy-Vatican treaty which gives the Church the right to run its own affairs.

The bill would also make discrimination against people based on their gender or sexual identity an imprisonable offense.

About 80% of respondents said they have been victims of, or witnessed, prejudice. A total of 62% said the prejudice was due to the color of their skin, 12% said it was due to language, and 10% to conditions of poverty.

The survey was conducted on the online platform U-Report on the Move, launched by UNICEF in 2017 to give a voice to unaccompanied minor migrants in Italy.

The body which governs European football has smacked down Munich’s plan for the city’s stadium to be lit up in ‘pride’ colours during Germany’s Euro 2020 match with Hungary on Wednesday to protest a new law banning the promotion of alternative sexual orientations to children.

Social Democrat Party (centre-left) Mayor Dieter Reiter stated on Sunday that he was writing to the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) to ask for permission to display the colour of the LGBT pride flag on the Allianz Arena to protest the new Hungarian law, but the body turned down his request.

The Munich city council said of the Hungarian law: “On the occasion of the European Championship match between Germany and Hungary, it is important for the state capital of Munich to send a visible signal of solidarity with the LGBTI community in Hungary, which is suffering from the currently tightened homophobic and transphobic legislation of the Hungarian government.”

Amnesty accuses Greece of using pushbacks as 'de facto border policy'

The German parliament has passed new legislation to ease the path to citizenship for descendants of people who fled Nazi Germany, closing certain loopholes on the issue from previous laws.

On Friday, Germany’s parliament approved legal changes to close prohibitive loopholes, making it easier for descendants of Nazi-era refugees to apply or reapply for German citizenship.

Former German citizens who were deprived of their citizenship on political, racial or religious grounds between 1933 and 1945 and their descendants can restore their citizenship under Germany’s Basic Law.

Two men arrested on suspicion of steering migrant boat to Canary Islands

Spanish police have arrested two men suspected of "steering and navigating" a migrant boat that capsized last week off the Spanish Canary Islands archipelago. Four bodies were recovered following the accident.

"Police have arrested the two skippers of the boat that arrived last Thursday off the coast of Lanzarote island" said a police statement, reported by the news agency Agence France Presse (AFP).

The boat overturned last week, just as it was approaching Lanzarote. Later, search and rescue teams recovered four bodies, including two women, one of whom was "visibly pregnant," and a young boy, maybe aged around eight, reported AFP.

Police said the two suspects had been identified by some of the 41 survivors of the accident as "being responsible for steering and navigating the boat." The police statement added that they were being held "on suspicion of encouraging illegal immigration and reckless homicide."
