Arrow Slaughter in South Africa- post your world cup robbery/rape/riot here

I'm starting this thread as per Alex's suggestion to have an organized area for all the good, clean Kaf fun that will be going on for the next month at World Cup South Africa.

Here is a first story via WhitenightShade's link, a stampede outside an exhibition between Nigeria and N. Korea:

South African preparations called into question after 15 injured in stampede
Geoffrey York

Ignored and alone, a soccer fan sat slumped on the ground, his head wrapped in bandages, his clothes covered in blood, as police milled around him.
The bloodied fan was one of the 15 people injured on Sunday in a chaotic stampede at a World Cup tune-up match between Nigeria and North Korea, sparking questions about organizational fiascos in the final days before the global soccer tournament.
Among the injured was a South African police officer who was seriously wounded and taken to hospital. The other victims were fans who were trampled in the stampede, although their injuries were minor, according to a police spokesman. The man with the bandaged head was eventually taken away in an ambulance.
The stampede was triggered when thousands of fans tried to enter Makhulong Stadium, a 12,000-capacity venue with cement bleachers in Tembisa, an impoverished township near Johannesburg. Entrance was supposed to be limited, but thousands of free tickets had been distributed and the fans angrily demanded to be allowed in. Police tried to block the main entrance gate, but the fans knocked open the gate, trampling each other and the police.
"It's unbelievable that nobody died," said Yan Boechat, a Brazilian magazine journalist who witnessed the moment when the stampede began. "They came in waves. I've never seen anything like it in Brazil."
One of the injured fans, Princess Mbali, said she was at the bottom of the heap of trampled fans. "I thought I was dying," she told The Associated Press.
Bizarrely, there were thousands of empty seats in the stadium, even as the police were struggling to prevent thousands of soccer fans from entering.
It was unclear why the police were trying to restrict entrance to the stadium. One report suggested that Nigerian officials - in charge of organizing the match - had wanted to limit attendance to just 5,000 people so they could save money on security guards. Others suggested that the police were blocking thousands of angry fans because they had arrived late.
After the police were overwhelmed by the fans, scores of reinforcements soon arrived, including many in riot gear, with helmets and shields, and others carrying guns. There was no explanation about why they were not present earlier.
At one point, the soccer match was suspended for about 10 minutes as police pushed back fans from one section of the field.
Just hours before the match, South African President Jacob Zuma had proclaimed that the country was "more than ready" to host the World Cup. He also declared that the World Cup had "already begun."
Yet the chaos in Tembisa suggested that the organizers are not yet ready. The problems at the stadium entrance were completely predictable, but nobody took charge of the situation - not anyone from Mr. Zuma's authorities, nor anyone from FIFA, the governing body for world soccer.
After the stampede, FIFA struggled to distance itself from the chaos at the match. "This friendly match has no relation whatsoever with the operational organization of the 2010 FIFA World Cup, for which we remain fully confident," FIFA said in a statement.
The FIFA website, however, leaves a very different impression. It listed the match on its calendar of World Cup events, and it referred to the match as "a 2010 World Cup South Africa tune-up match."
Just 10 days ago, there was similar chaos at the entrance to Soccer City, the massive 95,000-seat stadium where the opening match of the World Cup will be held this Friday. In that match, thousands of fans pushed and shoved in disorganized mobs at the entrance of Soccer City, knocking over fences and elbowing each other at the turnstiles. Once they entered the stadium, there was no crowd control and anyone could sit in any seat. It was a miracle that nobody was injured at that match, and it should have warned the authorities that they needed to improve the security arrangements at the tune-up matches.
The problems at the match on Sunday were predictable because Nigeria has a huge following in Johannesburg, where many thousands of Nigerian migrants live. Another problem was the distribution of cheap, photocopied tickets for the match, which made it easy for fans to photocopy their own extra tickets.
Lt. Col. Eugene Opperman, a spokesman for the South African police, promised an investigation to find out why the stampede happened.

Cop killed near soccer base camp

Johannesburg – Armed robbers killed one police officer and wounded another on Saturday in a shoot-out on a highway close to the base camp for several football World Cup squads, officials said.

A spokesperson for the Gauteng police said the officers came under fire south of Johannesburg after cornering two cash-in-transit vehicles which had been hijacked by the robbers.

“Two police officers were shot at, one was killed and one was injured when they responded to a cash-in-transit robbery,” said Colonel Noxolo Kweza.

“Two guards were injured in the shootout … They (the robbers) escaped with an undisclosed amount of cash. We are still investigating, details are still sketchy,” Kweza told AFP.

The shooting took place on the Maraisburg slipway off the main N1 highway which is close to the bases for both Mexico and Ivory Coast during the tournament which kicks off next weekend.

High crime rate remains one of the chief concerns in the run-up to the World Cup taking place in a country which has a murder rate of around 50 a day.

It isn't a surprise that a stampede is a term used to describe animal activities, and the only time you see them involving "humans," they're niggers or spics. I mean, look at that video. They're just running and trampling people like a bunch of mindless beasts.

Foreign journalists robbed

Members of the Portuguese media contingent covering the 2010 Soccer World Cup tournament were robbed at gunpoint, police sources confirmed to Beeld on Wednesday morning.

Portugal, a favourite to win the Cup, beat Mozambique 3-0 in a friendly in Johannesburg on Tuesday.

The journalists were overpowered at their 4-star lodge on the West Rand, about 60km from Fourways, at about 04:30.

Chinese journalists robbed

An armed gang stole money and a camera from four Chinese journalists in South Africa to cover the World Cup, Chinese state media reported on Thursday.

Several men attacked the journalists when their car stopped on the side of the road as they returned to Johannesburg after an interview, the reports said.

The thieves made off with a small amount of cash and a camera worth about $1 500 (R11 600), the Beijing News said.

"When you go out, you have to be careful, put all your valuables in the boot and no matter what happens, don't open the windows," one of the journalists was quoted as saying.

Warning

The paper said it was also trying to confirm a report that a Beijing journalist was robbed in South Africa.

Not related directly to crime, but this illustrates the wondrous transport network the tourists will be experiencing in Arsezania:

Cape Town - Two British tourists have been killed and 20 injured in a road accident just outside of Barberton after a trip to Swaziland, Mpumalanga police say.

Police spokesperson Leonard Hlathi told News24 the tourists were travelling on a bus converted from a truck and were due to leave South Africa on Thursday.

He added that from observations and records found at the scene, it was likely that the tourists were pupils on a school tour. The two who were killed were women.

"There were 22 tourists on the bus. All of them were UK citizens except the driver who is Zimbabwean," Hlathi said.

Of the 20 injured, one had to be airlifted to hospital because of the severity of their injuries, Hlathi said. The driver has also been admitted to hospital.

He said the cause of the accident was still unknown but that the driver could have lost control on a curve where the accident occurred.

Fans stampede at CT Fan Fest

A spokesperson for the city of Cape Town, Kylie Hatton, has urged the Cape Town public to stay away from the FIFA Fan Fest area because it is full to capacity.

Hatton confirmed an earlier report that one person had been injured while eager soccer supporters tried to gain entrance to the Grand Parade. The Fan Fest can accommodate 17 000 people.

The reported injuries were apparently all minor.

Another report said that people at the Darling Street entrance were pushing, all trying to gain entrance at the same time, but it became unruly when they broke down barriers.

Additional law enforcement officers had been summoned to the area in front of the historic Town Hall.

Mounted police push back crowd

Mounted police were used to push back the crowds outside Cape Town's fan park when the venue closed its gates on Thursday evening.

City authorities had said earlier that the park, which is hosting a day-night "Welcome the World Concert", would close the gates when it reached capacity at 17 000.

A line of police were deployed to bar entry at dusk.

Other police were also summoned to help push the crowd back.
However, hundreds of people were still massed at the barriers.

Hotel probes theft

Southern Sun Hotels is investigating "an allegation" that cash was stolen from the hotel rooms of Greece's national soccer squad in Durban, a company spokesperson said on Thursday.

"It is an allegation and we investigate all allegations," said Priya Naidoo.

Reuters earlier quoted Greece's team manager Michael Tsapidis as saying three members of the country's World Cup squad have had cash stolen from their rooms at the Beverly Hills Hotel in Durban's northern suburbs.

Acting hotel manager Patsy Esposito declined to discuss the report.

Durban police spokesperson Phindile Radebe said she had heard of the incident, but nobody had laid a charge.

6 injured at CT Fan Fest

Six people were injured in a crowd crush at the World Cup fan zone on Thursday when thousands of fans attempted to get into the venue, a city spokesperson said.

Pieter Cronjé said: "People were anxious to get in and just surged ahead. Fortunately it was a contained incident and calm was restored quickly."

All the injured were South African.

Officials later prevented people from entering the zone at the historic Grand Parade.

Alarmed by South Africa's notoriously high crime rate, Japan coach Takeshi Okada has told his charges to stay firmly inside their luxurious hotel while at their base camp.

"This is a country where you can rent a machine gun for 10,000 yen (about R860)," Okada said when asked what he had told the Blue Samurai players at the start of their first training session upon arrival in George on Sunday.

"There are people who may think it is alright to borrow 10,000 yen and then earn 50,000 yen," he told reporters. He was quick to ask diplomatically: "Don't you write about such a thing."

Okada said he had told the players "not to go out in a carefree manner." He also advised them to ask the hotel manager for a guard to accompany them when they want to go out shopping.

"They should stick with other people."

Japan are being lodged at the five-star Fancourt, South Africa's premier hotel and golf estate.

They are occupying 50 of the 150 rooms there, accompanied by chefs from home and paying an estimated $670 a night for a room in four-room cottages.

The sprawling, 613-hectare estate is surrounded by an electric fence with four guards seen at the main gate, as big as a football goal. Two of them are armed with guns.

Japanese journalists, accustomed to safety in their disciplined country, have been also told to put up guard after two South Korean television producers were reportedly attacked by thieves in Johannesburg.

"Japanese are seen as easy targets for thieves," Hideyuki Sakamoto, the minister at the Japanese embassy in Pretoria, said at a media seminar before the Samurai's training on Monday.

He said one Japanese was robbed of everything in Cape Town on New Year's eve.

His embassy will deploy a five-men "mobile unit" to help Japanese in distress at every venue for Japan's matches against Cameroon, the Netherlands and Denmark.

"They will be dressed in orange jackets. But don't mistake them for the Dutch team." - Sapa-AFP

Uruguay team robbed at hotel

Thieves broke into the Uruguay team hotel and stole $12 000 from two members of the squad while they were playing their match against France at the World Cup, Uruguay media reported on Saturday.

The robbers broke into the rooms of Ernesto Rodriguez and Daniel Marotta at a hotel in Cape Town during the Friday night game.

Rodriguez was robbed of $4 000 and Marotta was missing $8 000.

After reviewing surveillance camera recordings, South African police believe a member of the Uruguay delegation may have been involved.
