Quote:
Mourad Laachraoui, brother of terrorist Najim Laachraoui, who blew himself up in Brussels airport on Tuesday, is a medal-winning sportsman who won the Israeli Open Taekwondo Championship in Ramle in September.

Fourteen people were killed and dozens wounded when Najim, 25, and another terrorist blew themselves up at the airport earlier this week. Another twenty people were killed and over 100 wounded in the simultaneous bombing of a subway train in Brussels.

Brussels, Antwerp Jews spar over Holocaust memorial cobblestones

Jewish community split over Stolpersteine commemorative plaques in sign of growing rift between Flemings and Walloons

Jews from Brussels demonstrated in Antwerp against the refusal of the city and its Jewish community to use memorial cobblestones to commemorate Holocaust victims.

In a move that highlighted the spreading of Belgium’s binational divide to its Jewish communities, a dozen protesters from the Brussels-based Association for the Memory of the Shoah, or AMS, picketed on Monday outside Antwerp’s city hall while the leaders of Antwerp’s Jewish community were attending a commemoration service with Mayor Bart de Wever at a monument elsewhere in Antwerp.

Belgian Prime Minister pledges to continue to fight against anti-Semitism

Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel met with Israeli President Reuven Rivlin who is visiting Europe.

At a meeting in Brussels with President Reuven Rivlin on Monday, Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel pledged to continue to fight anti-Semitism in his country.

Rivlin for his part promised that Israel will stand shoulder to shoulder with Belgium during difficult times and in the struggle against terrorism.

Michel said that Belgium is interested in deepening and strengthening its political and security dialogue with Israel.

Rivlin told Michel that Israel is concerned at the increase in BDS activities in Belgium while simultaneously acknowledging that BDS is not as significant as the impression its activists would like to convey, and has had minimal effect on Israel’s economy. Nonetheless, even minor BDS activity serves to create the wrong impression, said Rivlin.

On the subject of anti-Semitism, Rivlin said that there is no doubt today of the connection between terrorism and anti-Semitism, but added that Islamic Jihad is not limited to people of the Jewish faith but is directed against people of all faiths. Michel said that he had zero tolerance for anti-Semitism.

He warned that it was dangerous to wait and see where current anti-Semitism will lead and what its impact will be on non-Jews.

On the subject of terror, Michel said that it was imperative for the intelligence services of both countries to work in closer cooperation because in the long run they had the same goal.

Rivlin is due to address the European Parliament in Hebrew on Wednesday.

Default Flanders: 25% Housing to “Foreigners”

Market day in Antwerp, Belgium.

Quote:
More than a quarter of all “social housing”—that is, government subsidized—residential homes in Flanders, Belgium, were given to non-Belgians in 2015, and in the major city of Antwerp, more than 40 percent of all houses were given to “non-EU foreigners.”

“Non-EU foreigners” means non-Europeans—Third Worlders, made up of legal and illegal immigrants, and thousands posing as refugees.

A press release, based on figures obtained in the Flemish parliament by the party’s spokesman on housing, Anke Van dermeersch, revealed that one in four social housing units in Flanders were assigned to “foreigners” in 2015.

Furthermore, of the 105,370 people waiting for social housing in Flanders, at least 28 percent are “foreigners.”

Van dermeersch’s figures showed that of the total of 8,970 allocated social housing units in 2015, at least 1,594 were given to “non-EU foreigners” (17.8 percent), 484 to foreign EU nationals (5 percent), and only 6211 to Belgian nationals. The recipient nationalities of a further 681 allocations was unknown.

In the province of Antwerp, out of a total of 2,848 housing units, 803 (28 percent) were allocated to “non-EU foreigners,” while 207 (7 percent) went to foreign EU foreigners, and 4766 were allocated to Belgians. The recipient nationalities of a further 72 allocations was unknown.

In the province of Limburg, out a total of 1,118 social housing units, 109 (10 percent) were given to “non-EU” foreigners, 64 (6 percent) were given to foreign EU nationals, and 698 (62 percent) assigned to Belgians. The recipient nationalities of a further 247 allocations was unknown.

In West Flanders, out of a total of 1,676 social housing units, 187 (11 percent) were allocated to “non-EU” foreigners, 60 (3.5 percent) were given to foreign EU nationals, and 1,402 (83.6 percent) were allocated to Belgians. The recipient nationalities of a further 27 allocations was unknown.

In East Flanders, out of a total of 2,319 social housing units, 366 (23 percent) were allocated to “non-EU” foreigners, 122 (5 percent) were given to foreign EU nationals, and 1,587 (68 percent) were allocated to Belgians. The recipient nationalities of a further 244 allocations was unknown.

In Flemish Brabant, out of a total of 1,009 social housing units, 129 (13 percent) were allocated to “non-EU” foreigners, 31 (3 percent) were given to foreign EU nationals, and 758 (76 percent) were assigned to Belgians. The recipient nationalities of a further 91 allocations was unknown.

There are currently some 105,370 prospective tenants on the waiting list for social housing, made up of 21,324 (20 percent) “non-EU” foreigners, 7,992 (7.6 percent) EU foreigners, and 65,563 (73.4 percent) Belgians.

It is especially in the city of Antwerp where the extent of the current Belgian government’s treason against its own people becomes most apparent.

In that city, one in two of all social housing units has been allocated to foreigners.

According to the figures obtained by Van dermeersch, some 40 percent of all housing allocations in that city during 2015 went to “non-EU” foreigners, and 8 percent to foreign EU nationals.

Of the 28,164 people currently on the Antwerp housing waiting list, 14,660 (52 percent) are foreigners, made up of 11,363 “non-EU” nationals and 3,297 foreign EU nationals. The nationality of a further 1,234 prospective tenants is unknown.

Antwerp has more than half a million inhabitants, and is the largest city in Flanders—and the second largest city in Belgium.

A 2010 report in the Express Business newspaper said that by the year 2020—now less than four years away—Antwerp was going to be 55 percent nonwhite. The report also said that in other Belgian cities such as Mechelen and Ghent, the number of “immigrants” would also reach 41 and 38 percent by 2020.

These figures were based on population statistics before the 2015 mass “refugee” invasion of Europe, so the swamping of these Belgian cities is likely to happen even sooner than the 2010 prediction.

Van dermeersch ended her press release with a demand that when it came to the allocation of social housing, Belgian people had to be put first.

“Those who do not have Belgian nationality cannot qualify for social housing,” she said.

“In some cities such as Antwerp, the majority of prospective tenants are foreigners and half the homes are already allocated to foreigners.

“Many social housing complexes have already become foreigner ghettos, and a halting of this alien influx is necessary to restore social housing to our own people.”

Machete-wielding man shot dead in Brussels terror attack after attacking soldiers

A knife-wielding man was shot dead on Friday after wounding a soldier in Brussels, in what authorities called a "terrorist attack".

The man, who prosecutors said yelled 'Allahu akbar' (God is greatest) during the violence, was shot by soldiers on a street in the city centre.

"We believe that it is a terrorist attack," said a prosecutors' office spokeswoman, who added the attacker "is dead."

The military is making preparations to retain street presence into 2020

The Army Chief of Staff expects the military to maintain a street presence in Belgium for a few more years to come.

The military training programme has consequently been adapted accordingly. This is explained by Major General Marc Thys on Monday in the daily publication De Standaard.

It is anticipated in the current Defence planning that so-called Operation Homeland continues through to 2020. Consequently, the training programme has been reviewed. Wide-ranging exercises involving several units are favoured, whilst the skills which are not necessary for street patrols are temporary put aside.

Marc Thys commented, “We should be ready and trained to undertake all of our missions.” He went on, “However troop morale remains our greatest challenge. On average, members of the military are involved in street patrol for six-month stints. As part of this programme, we are aiming to reduce street-patrol numbers by a third.”

The Major General would like to see that the role of the soldiers be more patrol-based and less static in front of major strategic buildings, which are potential terrorist targets.

Belgium exempts Holocaust survivors it fined for alleged tax evasion

Belgium’s Finance Ministry has exempted dozens of Dutch Holocaust survivors from penalties for not reporting special pensions they received from the Netherlands.

The New Flemish Alliance, the ruling party of the Belgian state of the Flemish Region, led a reform in federal tax regulations implemented this month that exempts the survivors living in Belgium from the heavy penalties imposed on them.

The penalties were imposed last year on recipients of a payment from the Netherlands known as WUV, which is given to some Holocaust survivors by the Dutch government’s Pensions and Benefits Council. In letters sent to WUV recipients living in Belgium, the Belgian tax authority demanded they pay back the WUV payments paid to them since 2013.

Hans Knoop, a well-known Dutch Jewish journalist living in Belgium, has lobbied the government with the survivors. Johan Klaps, a lawmaker for the New Flemish Alliance, helped push the exemption reform, Knoop told JTA, with the cooperation of Finance Minister Johan Van Overtveldt.

“The New Flemish Alliance deserves every credit for their role in solving the plight of Holocaust survivors who, out of the blue, were suddenly squeezed to pay thousands of dollars they did not have — with devastating effects to their mental well-being,” Knoop told JTA on Tuesday.

Elly Blik, a Holocaust survivor and WUV recipient who has been living in Belgium since the 1980s, said she was “deeply troubled by the penalties,” adding she was not aware of the need to report WUV payments to the Belgian tax authorities. Belgian recipients of special pensions are exempt from taxes on that income.

“The tax authority should not be going after 90-year-old war victims,” Blik said.

The New Flemish Alliance became Belgium’s largest party in the 2014 elections and is part of the coalition. It has made statements against anti-Semitism and has led legal and administrative actions to fight the phenomenon. The party is also largely supportive of Israel and enjoys strong ties with leaders of Flemish Jewry.

Still, some politicians from the New Flemish Alliance, which is one of several parties supportive of a ban on ritual slaughter of animals in Belgium, have been embroiled in scandals involving perceived pro-Nazi sympathies and alleged anti-Semitism. One lawmaker, Karlijn Deene, this year attended a meeting of Belgians who fought for Nazi Germany. In 2014, Interior Minister Jan Jambon of the party apologized for saying that although Nazi collaborators were wrong, “people had their reasons.”

In recent years, the New Flemish Alliance has distanced itself from sympathizers of Nazis and has undertaken efforts to commemorate the Holocaust.

“Racism and Xenophobia are priorities, but not every incident can be followed up”

Three out of four racism complaints are not followed up, the Medihuis papers reported on Saturday.

When appearing on Radio 1, the Justice Minister Koen Geens said complaints about “racism, xenophobia and similar incidents” are a priority and a referral magistrate has been nominated for each area. “But not every complaint can be followed up”, the CD&V Minister said.

There were 4,517 complaints about racism, xenophobia and similar incidents from the start of 2012 to last year. Three quarters of them have not been followed up. The proportion is the same for homophobia. 65.12% of sexual discrimination incidents are also not followed up, according to figures MP Elio Di Rupo gave the Justice Minster. There have only been 25 convictions for racism or xenophobia.

These low figures are explained by the fact that the perpetrator is often not known, and a lack of resources. Around 130 cases have been classed as “due to other phenomenon”.

Koen Geens has said that complaints about racism and xenophobia are a priority. But not every complaint is followed up. “The incident does not always fall into that category”, he explained. He does not deny the terrorist threat has kept judicial personnel busy.

Maximilien Park – Hundreds of people protest against racism during a Theo Francken conference

Around 400 people assembled at the Carrefour de l’Europe in Brussels between 7.30pm and 9pm on Friday evening.

They were protesting against the New Flemish Alliance’s “hateful and racist” policies. Home Affairs Minister Jan Jambon and State Secretary for Asylum and Immigration Theo Francken were holding a conference at the Hilton hotel, opposite Brussels central station, at the time.

Violence in Antwerp: 4 injured and around 40 arrests

Monday, 30 October 2017

Around forty individuals were made subject to administrative arrests during the period of Sunday night through to Monday morning.

This followed a fresh outbreak of violence around the Rue de Brederode. Local police confirmed this around 2 a.m. on Monday morning. Two legal arrests took place for carrying illegal weapons. The tensions injured four people, including a police inspector. Two people were taken to hospital.

After an initial outbreak of violence on Friday in the district, Sunday evening was also characterised by fresh tensions. The police communicated, “Members of the police mediation team were attacked by around a hundred people. Police forces quickly regained control of the situation. One policeman was injured and taken to hospital.”

Around 10.00 p.m., troublemakers once again disturbed the restoration of order. They attacked the police with batons and iron rods, as well as incendiary bombs. The police assessment of the incident went on, “Potentially there was a heavy weapon involved, but the police are not a position to confirm this. However, a light pistol was found.”

In the meantime, the Mayor of Antwerp, Bart De Wever (N-VA), declared a prohibition on further rallies, for a week at least in the Brederodewijk area. After order was restored, the police continued to patrol for several hours in the surrounding area, to check that the prohibition was being observed. They noted, “Several small groups violated the prohibition giving rise to administrative arrests.”

The tensions began on Friday, when a campaign bus for “Free Ocalan” (the surname of the Kurdish leader imprisoned by the Turkish courts) had ended up - accidentally - in Rue de Brederode. The conflict arose as numerous Turkish immigrants lived there.

New Year: stones thrown at police and fire crews and incidents at Anderlecht

Stones were thrown at police and fire crews on Sunday evening in the Molenbeek commune.

This was during New Year’s Eve. The Brussels-West police zone confirmed that the bodywork of three vehicles was slightly damaged.

The incidents took place around Boulevard Léopold II in Molenbeek and the metro station Etangs Noirs. The young individuals targeted a number of police vehicles, as well as a fire engine, which were operating within the commune.

The police said that the damage was limited to vehicle bodywork, but as a precautionary measure around 20 officers were sent to the scene. At present, the police have still not caught the culprits.

Similar incidents have happened in previous years on New Year’s Eve. The police indicated that, on this occasion, order was quickly restored.

New Year: individuals set fire to Haren police station - 37 arrests during the night

Brussels police announced on Monday that individuals set fire, during the night, to the local Brussels Capital/Ixelles police station in the Haren area.

Two suspects were arrested. In total, the Brussels police apprehended 37 individuals during New Year’s Eve night for questioning. In 23 such cases, these police questionings gave rise to administrative arrests, mainly for being drunk and public order offences.

The fire was set off at the entrance to the police station, located on Rue de Verdun in Haren. However, the police quickly extinguished the flames, which enabled them to limit the damage caused. Two individuals were arrested on-site in the wake of this incident.

Edelstein to Belgian MPs: More work to be done on Holocaust commemoration

BRUSSELS – Knesset Speaker Yuli Edelstein told the Belgian parliament on Tuesday that for all its noteworthy efforts to commemorate the Holocaust, “more work remains.”

Addressing hundreds of MPs ahead of International Holocaust Remembrance Day, Edelstein said that while it took time for Belgium to look into its Holocaust-era past, it eventually took important steps to do so.

“Only in 2002 did the Senate commission a report on the state’s role under the Nazi regime. Only in the past 10 years have local leaders issued apologies for helping round up Jews. Only five years ago was the national Holocaust museum opened,” he remarked.

“These recent steps, while perhaps belated, are important displays of responsibility, not only for the past, but for the future, as well,” he continued. “They are necessary to learning the lessons of this period and passing them on to the future generations so they will not repeat the mistakes of their ancestors.”

Edelstein also praised the many Belgian citizens who rescued Jewish countrymen.

“Three resistance fighters – armed with only a lamp, a pistol and pliers – helped Jews escape a transport to Auschwitz, the only death train ever attacked out of some 1,600 total,” he noted. “Thousands of other people, some operating through the Resistance and some on their own, risked their lives to rescue Jews, especially children. More than 1,700 have been named Righteous among the Nations, and the Jewish people is forever grateful for their heroism and humanity.

He also expressed appreciation that Holocaust education is now part of the school curriculum and visits to concentration camps and local memorials are common.

The Knesset speaker continued, however, by pointing out his concerns. He mentioned Antwerp’s attempt to move its main Holocaust monument, currently located at a site where victims were rounded up, to a “quieter place” where it would have “less of an impact on traffic.”

Edelstein also highlighted praise in Belgium for a teacher who won a cash prize in Iran for a controversial cartoon about the Holocaust, in which he appeared to be comparing Israel’s security barrier along the West Bank with the gates at Auschwitz concentration camp.

“We must not forget the heinous [2014] attack on the Jewish Museum in Brussels, in which four people – including two Israelis – were murdered. The list of tragic events goes on.”

“Ladies and gentlemen, Holocaust remembrance cannot belong to only a single day. It must pervade our lives every day and inspire us constantly,” he emphasized. “When we hear antisemitic slurs, we must stand up. When we see Jewish victims of hate crimes, we must come to their aid. When we read anti-Jewish canards thinly veiled as criticism of Israel, we must not make excuses. We must raise our voices in collective protest.”

He concluded, “Today is the day to take up this challenge as a national mission. We owe it to the 25,000 Belgian Jews who were sent to their deaths in Auschwitz and other Nazi camps. We owe it to the Belgian Jews of today who seek to be an active and appreciated part of this country. We owe it to ourselves and to our children to begin building a better future for every citizen of Belgium – regardless of race, religion, or ethnic background.”

Marxists decided to occupy the Gravensteen, a medieval castle and cultural pearl of Flanders.

They defiled the walls with banners calling for open borders and the symbolic "storming of Fort Europe".

The new Flemish Nationalist organisation Schild & Vrienden would not stand idly by while our heritage is used as a weapon to destroy our people so we went in to tear their propaganda down.

Skirmishes ensued both atop the walls and outside of the castle.

Anti-Semitic caricature appears in Belgian textbook

A geography textbook approved by country's Education Ministry shows overweight Jew asleep in bathtub near impoverished Palestinians with empty bucket; chapter deals with inequality in water distribution between Israelis, Palestinians residing in West Bank; International Legal Forum director: 'Unbelievable that in 2018 Belgium caricatures exist that scream anti-Semitism so bluntly, caricature should be expunged immediately.'

Almost 75% of young children in Belgium’s second largest city have migrant backgrounds

An increasing number of children in Belgium’s Antwerp have migrant backgrounds. While the number of native Belgians is decreasing, the number of people with a migrant background is surging.

Statistics from the city office show that in the group of children aged between 0 and 9 years, 74.10% have migrant backgrounds. In the group aged between 10 and 19 years the number of children with Non-Belgian backgrounds is at almost 70%.

The numbers show a rapid change in the city’s population. An ever increasing number of inhabitants of Belgium’s second largest city are of foreign origin. At this moment 58% of people living in the city have a migrant background. Most of which are North Africans.

The increasing number of people with migrant backgrounds also has its effects on unemployment. Almost 75% of unemployed in Antwerp are from this group.

Francken off to Tirana to dissuade Albanians from flocking to Belgium

Secretary of State Theo Francken travelled to Albania on Wednesday on a mission to dissuade Albanians from fleeing their country to seek a better life in Belgium.

Many of the Albanians try to apply for asylum which, in their case, has little chance of succeeding.

Francken, who is responsible for Asylum and Migration in Belgium’s Federal Government, is scheduled to remain in Albania until Friday. While there, he will meet the country’s political and police authorities.

In recent years, the European Union, particularly Member States such as Belgium, has received a significant number of asylum applications from Albanians, more than any other European nationals. In France, Albanians were the largest contingent of asylum seekers in 2017, more even than Afghans, Sudanese, Syrians or nationals of any other crisis country.

Belgium’s ex-PM accused of anti-Semitism for ‘Antwerp diamond dealers’ crack

Elio di Rupo accused of 'pouring oil on the fire' by using phrase many see as a disparaging reference to the city's sizable Jewish population

Belgium’s previous prime minister faced accusations of anti-Semitism after complaining in an interview that the kingdom has become a country “of Antwerp diamond dealers.”

Elio di Rupo, a socialist politician who serves as Belgium’s prime minister from 2011 to 2014, was accused of dog whistling in an interview published Friday in the L’Echo newspaper.

Brussels policemen say ex-boss denied Holocaust, insulted Jews

Senior police officer investigated for abusing Jewish subordinates.

A senior police officer in Belgium was transferred from his post for the duration of an investigation into claims that he abused Jewish subordinates and denied the Holocaust.

So far, five of the 15 officers who had served under Commissioner Geert Verhoeyen at the canine police unit of Brussels Midi complained about his alleged hate speech in recent years against gays, foreigners and Jews, the Het Laatste Nieuws daily reported. The report was a follow-up to a story published earlier Wednesday about Verhoeyen by the BX1 television station.

Belgian royal compares himself to Holocaust victims

A senior royal in Belgium has said that criticism of his conduct reminds him of the persecution of Jews during the Holocaust.

Prince Laurent, who has a record both of making provocative statements and of controversy around his use of public funds, made the remark in an interview for Het Nieuwsblad that was published last week, prompting criticism by Belgian Jews.

Laurent said he feels that he has become a “punching bag” solely “because I’m the brother or son of a king. When this sort of thing happens, I think immediately about the Jews who were shot dead only because they were Jewish.”
