Botched TikTok egg hack leaves woman with ‘poached’ face

By Ben Cost
July 13, 2021

It literally blew up in her face.

A UK woman’s attempt to poach eggs using a viral TikTok hack backfired horribly after the experiment egg-sploded in her face, leaving her with ghastly burns. Her recorded public service announcement warning other home cooks against the practice currently boasts over 120,000 views on the video platform.

“I’ve literally burned my full face and my neck off,” described Chantelle Conway in a July 4 clip detailing her experience with the time-saving TikTok shortcut, in which online epicures allegedly poach eggs to runny perfection by sticking them in the microwave for 90 seconds.

Irish regulator launches 2 investigations into TikTok for handling of children’s personal data and transfers to China

14 Sep, 2021 20:21

Ireland’s Data Protection Commission has opened two investigations into TikTok, focusing on the platform’s handling of children’s personal data, and the transfer of information to China, where TikTok’s parent company is based.

The inquiries were announced by the Data Protection Commission (DPC) on Tuesday, with the first to investigate whether TikTok complies with the European General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and separate Irish law regarding “platform settings for users under age 18 and age verification measures for persons under 13.”

The second inquiry will examine “transfers by Tiktok of personal data to China.” No further information was given by the DPC.

New ultraviolent ‘slap a teacher’ craze exposes failings in TikTok’s efforts to ban traumatic videos among impressionable teens

Damian Wilson

Violent assaults against defenceless victims caught on smartphones and shared online for amusement are no new thing, so why has TikTok not managed to come to terms with preventing these unacceptable and grossly offensive videos?

In this age of quantum leaps in technology and seemingly endless possibilities about what we can do with our smartphones nothing is really that novel. So, while disturbing, it’s not surprising to see a new craze of violent assault videos being recklessly shared among TikTok’s one billion users.
(...)
While they might attempt to shift the blame, we must hold TikTok to account. When a video of a sucide went viral, the sharing service blamed a coordinated attack from the ‘dark web’ for spreading the traumatising clip. When accused of spreading content that glamorised eating disorders like bulimia and anorexia, it issued an anodyne statement claiming the safety of its users was its top priority. And when it was found to be used by Islamic State terrorists to share propaganda, the PR department announced, “Content promoting terrorist organisations has absolutely no place on TikTok.”

TikTok makes all the right noises when it’s called out on these issues but it needs to do more in preventing them from happening in the first place. It’s no use taking a video down once it’s been viewed several million times. The damage is done. User data has already been gathered and, of course, the money already made.

If Bytedance is to be allowed to operate within a nation’s borders making billions in the process with just a hint of taxes extracted, then it needs to be more accountable, not just in financial terms but in the realm of social responsibility.

We can’t have massive, foreign-owned corporations disseminating ultraviolent videos among our youngsters, accountable to no one but themselves and left to police their own behaviour. It’s just a bonkers idea to even think that is acceptable.

So let’s crack down on TikTok. Let’s hammer them with hefty fines for every video that promotes assault, terrorism, pornography, eating disorders and even suicide and keep hammering them until they receive the message and take preventative steps.

Teens have a huge capacity for evil if encouraged. Look at the Chinese Cultural Revolution as a good example. Teens having fun by being cruel towards their elders. American teens lack guidance because their parents are lazy. Teens without good role models are scary.

Only "Slap" a teacher? During the Chinese cultural revolution, all teachers were purged and sent to labor camps, students have no school. Let's import this Made in China revolution into the US.

Additional suspects arrested in Covington High Tik-Tok teacher attack

By Rob Masson and Jesse Brooks
Published: Oct. 7, 2021 at 5:05 PM GMT+2 | Updated: Oct. 9, 2021 at 12:08 AM GMT+2

COVINGTON, La. (WVUE) - Following the arrest of a Covington High School student for attacking a teacher after an apparent Tik-Tok challenge gone wrong, police have announced the arrest of additional suspects.

Trinity Gervais, 18, and a juvenile suspect turned themselves into the Covington Police Department after they were identified by detectives conducting an investigation.

The juvenile suspect was released on a custodial agreement and Gervais was issued a misdemeanor summons. Both suspects were charged with violation of L.R.S. 14:107.4, Unlawful Posting Of Criminal Activity For Notoriety and Publicity (Misdemeanor).

A school spokesperson said that all involved may face additional disciplinary actions from officials.

A wheelchair-bound 64-year-old teacher was injured in an attack after the bell rang, and the superintendent says he is appalled.

TikTok video moderator sues over ‘mental’ damage

A content moderator for TikTok is suing the company, alleging that it failed to protect her mental health while she was forced to watch graphic videos including suicide, murder and cannibalism.

Candie Frazier – who allegedly worked 12 hours a day monitoring TikTok videos for the contracting company Telus International – filed a lawsuit against TikTok and its parent company ByteDance claiming she now “has trouble sleeping” and that “when she does sleep, she has horrific nightmares” due to the disturbing videos.

According to Bloomberg, the videos Frazier was exposed to at work include clips of “freakish cannibalism, crushed heads, school shootings, suicides, and even a fatal fall from a building, complete with audio.”

“Due to the sheer volume of content, content moderators are permitted no more than 25 seconds per video, and simultaneously view three to ten videos at the same time,” the lawsuit alleged, claiming moderators were only allowed to escape the content with two 15-minute breaks and an hour for lunch.

Children are being 'brainwashed' by TikTok videos on ‘cool’ trans surgery viewed 26 billion times, campaigners claim

By SAM MERRIMAN FOR THE MAIL ON SUNDAY
PUBLISHED: 22:00 GMT, 25 December 2021 | UPDATED: 13:19 GMT, 26 December 2021

Campaigners have accused TikTok of helping children to be ‘brainwashed’ by hosting viral social-media videos that promote changing sex as ‘cool’.

Material posted by transgender influencers on the social networking service – in which they provide advice on transitioning and accessing hormone therapies – has been seen by millions of young viewers.

Some parents are concerned the involvement of TikTok, which became the UK’s most downloaded app last year, is fuelling a ‘social contagion’ of pressure on impressionable youngsters and the rise in teenagers who are identifying as trans.

TikTok Promotes ‘Gender Reassignment’ Surgery, Transgender Lifestyle

PENNY STARR 8 Jan 2022

The social media platform TikTok is promoting the hashtag #transgender to congregate videos about gender reassignment surgery and other topics, including how women living as men will feel better about menstruation if products are in masculine packaging.

“My boyfriend’s transgender son was uncomfortable about his female puberty,” the text says on one video, which shows someone redecorating a package of sanitary napkins to be black with the words “Fortnight Battle Royale.”

I presume the Chinese have one Tic Tok for the world,
and a different, cleaned-up version
for internal consumption.

TikTok star Mizzy bailed over alleged social media order breach

By Jess Warren & PA Media
BBC News

The TikTok star known as Mizzy has been given conditional bail after being charged with breaching a court order.

Mizzy - whose birth name is Bacari-Bronze O'Garro - appeared at Thames Magistrates' Court earlier on Tuesday.

On Saturday, the 18-year-old pleaded not guilty at the same court to three breaches of a criminal behaviour order (CBO) relating to the posting of prank videos on social media.

Speaking outside the court, he said any breach of the CBO was not his fault.

Mr O'Garro, of Manor Road, Hackney, is accused of posting a video on social media without the consent of the people featured, as well as visiting Westfield Centre in Stratford, east London, on 25 May, which he is not permitted to do under the terms of his CBO.
