This article from last year details one admin's experience supporting 43,000 users on mastodon. It appears he was able to do it reasonable well with 8 servers.

Scaling up usually means more servers, more servers means more costs. In a cloud environment, scaling isn't usually hard, it typically depends on software being used. But finding a hosting provider that we can rely and won't us shut down, that's the trick. I suspect if mastodon can handle 43,000 users, with a enough computing resources it could handle more.

Mastodon software has many community censorship feautures.

The service includes a number of privacy features. Each message has a variety of privacy options available, and users can choose whether the post is public or private. Public messages display on a global feed, known as a timeline, and private messages are only shared on the timelines of the user's followers. Messages can also be marked as unlisted from timelines or direct between users. Users can also mark their accounts as completely private. In the timeline, messages can display with an optional "content warning" feature, which requires readers to click on the content to reveal the rest of the message. Mastodon instances have used this feature to hide spoilers, trigger warnings, and not safe for work (NSFW) content, though some accounts use the feature to hide links and thoughts others might not want to read.[4]

Mastodon aggregates messages in local and federated timelines. The local timeline shows messages from users on a singular instance, while the federated timeline shows messages across all participating Mastodon instances. In early 2017, journalists distinguished Mastodon from Twitter for its approach to combating harassment, one of Twitter's largest issues.[4] Mastodon uses community-based moderation, in which each instance can limit, or filter out undesirable types of content. For example, the flagship instance, Mastodon.social, bans content that is illegal in Germany or France, including Nazi symbolism, Holocaust denial and discrimination. The point is you're getting the smartest, youngest and most effective memers and writers and thinkers in one place - growing a ball of anti-jewism, getting larger literally every day.

Hunter Wallace says in the comments section of the link Alex posted that he is going back to Twitter and Facebook, the problem is if they ban high profile conservatives and zionists like Alex Jones means that they will ban anyone that isn't a leftist sooner or later or sabotage their accounts when they get too popular or too edgy so your followers will stop receiving your posts in their feed without you knowing it.
Their latest (((trick))) is deleting followers, they will cheat to make your efforts worthless, so it is a waste of time.
