Always in gun free zones.

When was the last time someone tried to shoot up a NRA meeting?

Yeah, thought so.

7 injured in LAX shooting spree; suspect arrested

LOS ANGELES — A gunman armed with a semi-automatic rifle went on a shooting spree Friday at Los Angeles International Airport that left at least 7 people injured before the suspect -- who forced his way past a checkpoint -- was tracked down and taken into custody, according to LAX police chief Patrick Gannon.

Gannon said it is believed that the gunman was acting alone.

He said the shooting began at 9:20 am. PT when the suspect pulled an "assault rifle" out of a bag and began to open fire in LAX Terminal 3.

"He proceeded up to the screening area, and continued shooting, and went past the screeners back to the airport itself," Gannon said.

Airport police "responded immediately," he said, tracking down the shooter and taking him into custody.

Tim Kauffman, a spokesman for the American Federation of Government Employees in Washington, confirmed that a Transportation Security Administration officer was killed.

He said the union's information came from their local officials in Los Angeles.

The shooting spree brought the giant airport complex to a halt, with travelers marooned on buses or sidewalks and police doing their best to unsnarl traffic.

LAPD Assistant Chief Earl Paysinger says the suspect was armed with a semi-automatic rifle.

Dana Starfield tells KCBS-TV that she heard a boom behind her while standing in security line.

"We heard someone scream, 'a gun, everybody get down, get down.' ... We just crawled through the security gate....''

Starfield said Virgin airline employees guided her and several others into a small room, where they tried to block entry by moving a copying machine in front of the door.

"We heard a few more booms,'' she said.

She said about 15 minutes later SWAT officers came through and led them to safety.

Luke and Alexa Sieber of Green bay, Wisc., were in line at an airport counter when they heard eight shots followed by another burst of 20.

Witness Brian Keech said he heard "about a dozen gunshots" from inside the security gate at Terminal 3, which serves Allegiant Air, Frontier, JetBlue, Spirit, Virgin America and other airlines.

LAX shooting kills TSA officer, wounds others

A gunman walked into Terminal 3 at Los Angeles International Airport Friday morning, pulled an assault rifle out of a bag and opened fire, killing a Transportation Security Administration officer at a security checkpoint and wounding multiple other TSA officers, authorities and law enforcement sources said.

The information was preliminary and could change as the incident is investigated.

Law enforcement sources tell CBS News the suspect was wounded in the incident but survived and is in custody. Preliminary information indicated that the suspect may have been an off-duty TSA employee, but a federal official told CBS News the suspect was not a current or former employee of the agency.

Airport police Chief Patrick Gannon told reporters during an afternoon news conference that the gunman pulled an assault rifle out of a bag and began to open fire inside the terminal.

"He proceeded to go up to the screening area and continue firing," Gannon said.

The gunman then engaged with authorities past the checkpoint and was successfully taken into custody after what Gannon described as an "officer-involved shooting."

"We believe at this point that there was a lone shooter, that he acted alone in this incident," Gannon said, adding that police have completed a security sweep of the airport.

The suspect entered the terminal wearing military-like clothing when he opened fire, law enforcement sources told CBS News.

Aerial video showed what appeared to be a TSA employee being wheeled away into an ambulance by police.

Several people were seen being treated by emergency responders outside the terminal, but it's unclear if they are gunshot victims.

Passenger Robert Perez told CBS Los Angeles that TSA agents came through the terminal and yelled that a man had a gun.

"I heard popping and everybody dropped to the ground," Perez said.

The airport announced on its Twitter feed that flight operations were temporarily held except for arriving flights.

Default Seems to me he was targeting TSA employees

LAX shooting: The latest.

A gunman armed with a high-powered rifle opened fire at Los Angeles International Airport Friday morning, killing a TSA agent and wounding several others.

Authorities said the gunman fired at several locations in Terminal 3 before police shot him. LAX police did not reveal his condition.

The motive was unclear. A federal law enforcement official said that the gunman was a ticketed passenger entering the airport.

Officials don’t believe the gunman has ever worked for TSA. Law enforcement sources had earlier told The Times the gunman was a TSA employee.

Los Angeles Police Department anti-terrorism officials were on the scene, but sources said they don't believe the suspect was tied to any known terrorist groups. They believe he acted alone.

At a press conference, the Los Angeles Fire Department treated seven people at the scene and transported six to local hospitals.

Patrick Gannon, the LAX police chief, said gunman came into Terminal 3 at 9:20 a.m. He pulled an assault rifle out of his bag and began firing. He moved into the screening area and continued shooting, Gannon said. He went passed the security area further into the terminal.

Authorities tracked him down and shot him near a Burger King.

Vernon Cardenas, 45, of West Hollywood said he was at the airport on his way to Philadelphia when the shooting occurred about 9:30 a.m. in Terminal 3.

“Sitting down, all of a sudden, literally just out of the blue, you hear a rumble in the background and a couple of seconds later, people are running at me,” said Cardenas, who does casting for the Fox television show "MasterChef." Brian Adamick, 43, said he was getting ready to fly to Chicago for his brother’s wedding and was boarding a Spirit Airlines flight at Gate 32 in Terminal 3.

He said people were running through the terminal, away from a security area. Adamick said he went through an emergency exit downstairs onto the tarmac with several other passengers.

“While I was on the tarmac, I heard two gunshots from the same area where the people had been running and screaming,” he said.

A few minutes after he got outside, he said buses showed up to help evacuate passengers. He saw a wounded TSA agent board one of the buses. The man’s ankle was bloody: “it looked like it was straight out of the movies,” Adamick said.

The man, told him, “I got shot, I’m fine.” He told passengers not to worry about him and that he had been shot before, Adamick said.

A White House official said President Obama had been informed of the incident:"The President has been briefed about the shooting at LAX.
