Minn. firm recalls ground beef

May 12, 2007, 0:08 GMT

WINDOM, MN, United States (UPI) -- A Minnesota meat packer is recalling 117,500 pounds of beef trim products shipped to customers in eight states because of possible E. coli contamination.

Two children and five adults contracted E. coli after eating ground beef bought from one of four Lunds or Byerly`s grocery stores in the Twin Cities since April 12, the Minnesota Health Department said Thursday.

The health department said ground beef that was purchased after April 7 from a Lunds or Byerly`s store should be discarded or returned to the store because it may be tainted with E. coli 0157:H7.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture says PM Holdings, a meat packer in Windom, Minn., is voluntarily recalling beef trim products produced on March 27 and shipped to distributors and retail outlets in Arizona, Illinois, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, Virginia and Wisconsin.

Because these products later became ground beef sold under many different retail brand names, consumers should check with their local retailer to determine whether they may have purchased any of the products subject to recall, the USDA said in a release.

Consumers are reminded to cook all ground beef patties to 160 degrees Fahrenheit to kill harmful bacteria.
