Classical Music, Part 1: No Noteworthy Female Composers
Why are there no female composers of note? You’d think, after all these years, that there would be a few. One expert said there are no female composers of note because “so few women wrote music.” True, if you’re talking about 1880. If you’re talking about 1990-onward, there are many who write music. Yet none have excelled at all. One woman opined that there are few girls taking up composing because all of the musical giants in history are misogynistic, racist, “dead White men” and the girls feel intimidated and “less confident” taking up composing as a result. Yeah, sure, excuses, excuses. (In the future, look for Western governments, in the name of equality, to force the issue, e.g., by requiring symphonies to play “X” number of musical pieces written by women per year. It’ll happen!). ________ Classical Music, Part 2: Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker Suite The music from The Nutcracker (which is a ballet written in Russia in 1892) runs about 1 hour and 15 min. The “famous part” (called The Nutcracker Suite) doesn’t come along until about 45 minutes into the ballet — I guess Tchaikovsky wanted to save the best music for last [1]. Here’s the Suite: [Video/audio, duration is 25 minutes]. . [1] called “The Nutcracker Suite, Op. 71a” Read more at Vanguard News Network Blog... |

Tchaikovsky and Prokofiev were unsurpassed amongst their fellow Russians. At one point Prokofiev was censured by (((Soviet Authorities))). His music wasn't to their liking, as it wasn't jewish.

This is a 'classic' problem now. The music world is trying to force women classical composers on their community, but, yes, there just aren't that many, and no real major works, and you can only carry cries of sexism so far.
Women composers I know are Clara Schumann, Robert Schumann's wife, who was an accomplished performer on piano, a guiding influence on Brahms, and she's written some interesting chamber pieces, but nothing that knocks you off your seat. Her style is much like Schumann, and some claim he 'stole' her style...usual feminist crap, and a movie some years ago said as much. Fanny Mendelssohn, Felix's sister, composed piano pieces, songs, and a trio sonata, although Mendelssohn disapproved of his sister competing witth him, but she didn't seem to take her work that seriously. Also, Mozart's sister maybe did some composing, but not much. Again, how the hell could you hope to compete with a brother like Wolfgang? yes, another movie showing how her talent was destroyed, etc. There's also Amy Beach. She was turn of the century American, and has written some good chamber pieces, songs, etc. I don't think her major works are that great, but she is good. She had a good feel for tunes and melody...and of course once the 20's came along, with all the love for jazz, she was out of date. In the 70's, she made a semi-comeback, but you have to understand how firmly academia controls music, and they still love jazz and anything Jewish. Also there's Amalie of Prussia, Frederick the Great's sister. She wrote some chamber pieces, marches, organ pieces. Her sister Wilhemina wrote a harpsichord concerto, although there is some debate if Quantz, Frederick's court composer, helped her a lot with it, but it's okay. Barbara Strozzi was a well-known woman composer in 1600's Italy. Her stuff is good. I've heard some recent women composers, but much of it kind of academic and mediocre...much like 90 percent of most contemporary classical music, which is more academic then geared for an audience. The classical community is also frantic to find any black composers. Back in the 70's, almost any classical concert HAD to have some Scott Joplin, and I note that an Early Music group will have works of St. Juste, a black who composed in the late 18th century...you have to understand these groups need funding, and now, almost any public funding demands something for ethnics. |

Clearly White men have given the world our greatest music. I can't imagine a world without the music of Debussy, Beethoven, Mozart, Bach, or Wagner.
Why do you have to constantly diminish the value of White women because they did not do this or that. Obviously, for whatever reason, White men had the ability to write beautiful music. And they had the lifestyles or whatever that allowed them to spend their lives writing that music. I wonder where most women of years past would even find the time to contemplate, write, and perform their own music. You know: between the having babies, caring for children, baking, cooking meals, cleaning, sewing clothes, etc. Back then those duties took all day long. VNN never fails to find a way to insult White women while building up the accomplishments of White men. Instead of trying to build bridges to White females, all you do is burn them.

However, let's not count out "The Five" Russian composers: Mily Balakirev (the leader), César Cui, Modest Mussorgsky, Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov and Alexander Borodin. Cf. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Five_(composers) And also Sergei Rachmaninov and Dimitri Shostakovich. Also Igor Stravinsky, a pupil of Rimsky-Korsakov. The Russian composers had a genius only matched by Wagner, Beethoven, Liszt, Mendelssohn, Mozart, Haydn, and some of the great Italian operatic composers like Rossini, Puccini, Verdi, and Donizetti.

Hey, Susan, you talking to me? I said some very nice things about women composers, and offered a general estimation of them. As for contemporary composers, I dumped men and women.
I think of Barbara Harbach, a composer at UMSL. I've heard two of her operas and chamber works, and, I'm sorry, they're just bland. She doesn't build up to anything, but she's fairly more tolerable than John Adams, whose made a career of monotone music. There are talented composers of both sexes at work now, in fact I heard some good songs at a recital recently by a couple of women, but on the whole, serious music, like all other culture, isn't too great. There's just a lot of noise and doodling that passes for music. We're in a Hellenistic period of civilization, where technology wins out over art. |

Sorry Steven, I was not talking to you or about you. My post was confusing. I was referring to the original post in this thread. And to those individuals here who constantly denigrate females.

I took it as a rightfully deserved slam against feminism rather than a denigration of White women. It is true that there were not many female composers just like there have not been many female inventors. Female minds simply are not wired for such things and there is nothing wrong with that.
