Default Welfare fraud costing taxpayer almost €2 billion annually

Minister for Social and Family Affairs Mary Hanafin has defended her department’s record in tackling welfare fraud after a RTÉ Prime Time programme revealed fraud and mistakes relating to a range of benefits cost the Exchequer almost €2 billion annually.

The programme, which was broadcast last night, showed that fake PPS numbers could be easily obtained on the black market after just a few telephone calls.

Default It almost seems that priests and homosexuals have changed places in modern Irish life

Power in Ireland clearly likes to be naked, even when intellectual

IT'S not the double standards of Irish life which trouble me, so much as the transparent hypocrisy with which they're applied. It's if as the rest of society won't notice when one set of rules is imposed on one occasion, but then thrown aside on another.

Pace yesterday's column on the priest Sean Sheehy giving a character reference to the convicted sex-offender Danny Foley, which triggered mass-indignation from women commentators. But not long before that court case, the writer Colm Toibin gave a character reference to the poet Desmond Hogan who had been found guilty of sexually assaulting a 15-year old boy, with what we now call "special needs". Desmond Hogan walked free from the court, despite the youth and vulnerability of his victim.

Response from the professionally angry classes? Silence.

It almost seems that priests and homosexuals have changed places in Irish life. Once it was the latter that Official Ireland marginalised and ostracised. Now it is the former. And I wouldn't mind, except that the double standards are still so ostentatious.

Power in Ireland clearly likes to be naked, even when intellectual. So the Ireland that banned contraception and divorce and abortion, even for women with cancer, and which imposed Catholic teaching through the institution of the State, has metamorphosed into a doctrinaire liberal Ireland, with new icons, and new mores, that are just as hypocritical and as intolerant as the Catholic values they are displacing.

If there were some subtlety from the new hierarchy I might be a little more tolerant of its admonitions. But there is not. It is every bit as crude and flagrantly discriminatory as the hierarchy that went before it. How else could Dail Eireann have passed the outrageous Sexual Offences Act of three years ago, which rules that a 16-year old boy who has sex with a 16-year old girl shall be guilty of a sexual offence, but the girl shall not, by statute bound? This 16-year-old girl might have had many sexual partners, and the lad she seduces might be a virgin, and God knows it is not difficult to successfully proposition a 16-year-old boy. But our lawmakers have specifically introduced a discriminatory clause which states that the boy shall always be the offender, and the girl shall always be the victim; and thus the boy can be imprisoned, and be put on the sex-offenders' register, and so be debarred for ever from emigrating to the US.

Not merely did this ridiculous law get passed through Dail Eireann, it was ratified by the Seanad, and signed by the President. What would those two august bodies, and that august lady, have done had the law penalised the girl only, and exonerated the boy, as a matter of statute?

The State has conjured any number of government-sponsored quangos into existence to impose the rules of the new Official Ireland of the Mind, and to vilify those who oppose their agenda. Other, mirror-image but self-appointed bodies have emerged throughout Irish life, and with comparable agendas. Thus, if I say that one of the problems with Kilbarrack is that its young male population consists of largely priapic, oversexed ruffians, I will get into trouble from the National Council for the Unemployed, the Labour Party, and every liberal in the Seanad. If I say that the problem with Malawi is that its young male population consists of largely priapic oversexed ruffians, I will be hounded by the National Migrants Council and by Dochas, which (as I know from personal experience) will try to jail me, and by the National Press Council, in a serious attempt to destroy my career.

BUT if I say that the problem with Irish rugby-clubs is that their young males are largely priapic, oversexed ruffians, I will be congratulated for courageously revealing an untold truth.

For Official Ireland of the Mind revels in double standards, and in the imposition of its own politically-ordained moral order; why, just like the Catholic Church of yesteryear.

We now know that Gerry Adams -- who was the archbishop, the police commissioner and the chief justice within the entire republican community -- effectively protected his brother Liam after the latter was accused of incestuous rape. Liam Adams was even allowed to work with youth groups (and actually had a prominent role in that jolly outfit, the republicans' internal security unit). Do you really think that Official Ireland is going to go after Gerry Adams in the same way as the archdiocese of Dublin was pursued? (Never mind for the moment that the consequences for some of those with whom Liam Adams had a cosy chat turned out to be somewhat graver than normal?)

Yes, Official Ireland of the Mind is rightly angry about the failure of the State to punish the criminals in our financial community for the destruction of the Irish economy. But do its adherents not see that they are part of the problem?

Intellectual incoherence is like an unfinished roof. Merely because the tiles over your head are intact doesn't mean you won't get wet if tiles are missing elsewhere.

Which is one reason we are now all getting thoroughly soaked.

Default Call for action on asylum ‘mess’

The number of asylum applications received by the Department of Justice in 2009 fell by 35% when compared with 2008. But funding for the asylum and immigration service during the same period was up by 16%.

Fine Gael Immigration and Integration spokesman Denis Naughten said, "We need a determined approach to deal with the present mess and I’m calling on the minister for justice to prioritise this area in the interests of the taxpayer. By streamlining the existing asylum system, treating people with dignity and in a timely manner, we could save the taxpayer a small fortune."

Mr Naughten said, "The additional costs associated with asylum accommodation in 2009 ran at €50,000 a day more than originally projected; this is on top of a cost over-run in 2008 of €40,000 a day".

Default Bishop urges Mel Gibson to help Irish hometown

LONDON - A Catholic Bishop in Mel Gibson’s ancestral Irish hometown has urged the actor to help restore a local cathedral.

Bishop Colm O’Reilly turned to the Oscar winner, whose mother hails from Ardagh in County Longford, Ireland, after the Longford cathedral was reduced to flames on Christmas Day.

“It would be nice for him to get involved, it certainly would be appreciated,” the Daily Express quoted the Bishop as saying.

“We’ve never had any contact with him up until now. His name of course, comes from here.

Ireland’s deputy prime minister was trapped in a car for two hours on Saturday afternoon after being surrounded by demonstrators protesting against water charges.

Joan Burton, the Labour party leader, had to be rescued by Garda Síochána officers when her vehicle was trapped within a large angry crowd in the Jobstown area of west Dublin.

Burton, who is also the Irish Republic’s minister for social protection, was attending a graduation ceremony when about 100 protesters rushed towards her ministerial car after the event finished at about midday.

During the incident a Garda helicopter monitored the situation.

Irish Socialist party TD Paul Murphy, who represents the area in the Dáil, said: “The protest has been peaceful. Yes, she has been delayed here for a number of hours but I think this protest has sent a very clear message to her, a message which the Tánaiste [deputy prime minister] has ignored to date, that people don’t want to pay these water charges.

“There is national anger over the changes but particularly in Tallaght and Jobstown in west Dublin … there are a lot of people who simply can’t afford to pay,” he said, adding the protesters were also sending a message to Irish Water that the people of Tallaght would not accept water charges.

A spokesman for the deputy prime minister said she had attended a graduation ceremony at An Cósan higher education college.

“Nothing should be allowed to detract or deflect from what was a very important day for those students,” he said.

jewsign Does Sinn Féin fully support a boycott of Israel?

Sinn Féin has a solid record of*supporting*the Palestinian struggle for justice and equality.

That record does not remove the need to scrutinize the Irish political party – now*riding high*in opinion polls – and its activities.

Last month, a London-based organization called Forward Thinking published a one-paragraph*report*of a trip it took to Belfast and Dublin. The visit allowed the organization to plan “forthcoming delegations of Israeli and Palestinian political and community leaders,” the report stated.

Forward Thinking met “special advisers” from Sinn Féin and two other political parties during the trip, the report added.

Despite its brevity, the report is disturbing.

When Benjamin Netanyahu was Israel’s prime minister, Sinn Féin*took part*in discussions with his Likud party over a number of years.

Those discussions – arranged by the aforementioned Forward Thinking - have been*opposed*by Sinn Féin’s rank and file.

Because of that opposition, Sinn Féin made a formal*pledge*at its 2018 annual conference to “fully support” the Palestinian call for boycott, divestment and sanctions. As part of that pledge, Sinn Féin would not meet any “Israeli government grouping” until “Palestinian representatives” requested or approved such discussions

Schools urged to get involved in Holocaust commemorative project

Former President of Ireland, Mary McAleese, this week officially launched Holocaust Education Ireland’s Crocus Project, by planting crocus bulbs in her garden at home in Roscommon with the help of local schoolchildren.

The yellow flowers, recalling the yellow Stars of David, will bloom around the time of International Holocaust Memorial Day on 27th January. Holocaust Education Ireland are encouraging schools in Clare to register to participate in the project ahead of the registration deadline, Friday, 28th October.

The Crocus Project commemorates all of the children who perished in the Holocaust, and aims to educate schoolchildren over the age of ten about the Holocaust and the dangers of racism, and all forms of discrimination and hatred.

Speaking at the launch this week, Professor Thomas O’Dowd, Chairperson of Holocaust Education Ireland, said: “We are delighted to have former President of Ireland, Mary McAleese, launch our annual Crocus Project this week, and we are encouraging schools in Clare to register to participate before the deadline passes.

“The project is an important opportunity to introduce young people to the subject of the Holocaust, and teach the importance of inclusion and respect for all people regardless of their ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation or religious beliefs.

“Seeing the flowers bloom in the early new year ensures that the stories of the children who perished in the Holocaust are not forgotten but are passed on to future generations, while educating our young people in a tangible way about the perils of prejudice. The beautiful flowers also remind us that, even after the most terrible events, new life begins again and we can have hope in the future.”

Mary McAleese, said: “I am delighted to support The Crocus Project. The lesson of the Holocaust is one of the most important lessons for children to learn and the Crocus Project is a gentle way to introduce young people to the subject. The project will sow the seeds of inclusivity, justice and acceptance into the minds of the next generation so that, through learning from the terrible mistakes of the past, we can build a more caring and inclusive Ireland.”

There is no charge for participating in the Crocus Project. Holocaust Education Ireland provides teachers and educators with crocus bulbs and a Teacher’s Handbook as well as guidance about the project that includes information and age appropriate material. The handbook is available in English and as Gaeilge as well as twelve European languages to ensure that children in Ireland and across Europe can fully participate in the project.

The Crocus Project is co-funded by the European Union and supported by the Department of Education.

Racism action plan aims to combat anti-immigration activities

First national plan in over a decade will tackle ethnic profiling by gardaí and discrimination in rental sector, and promote inclusion of minorities

Mon Mar 20 2023

The first national plan against racism in more than a decade, to be published on Tuesday, “can and must” tackle a surge in anti-immigration activities, says Minister of State for integration Joe O’Brien.

The plan, to run over five years to 2027, includes commitments that gardaí will “eliminate” policing practices that include racial or ethnic profiling, that discrimination in the private rented sector will be addressed, and political parties will be “incentivised” to select candidates from minority backgrounds.
