Ex-PM punishes son with Elie Wiesel internship following appearance in public with swastika on arm
http://english.hotnews.ro/stiri-top_...astika-arm.htm Romania's ex-PM Adrian Nastase sends his son for an internship at "Elie Wiesel" as a form of punishment for his son appearance, swastika on his arm, at a party. The Social Democratic politician brings the news on his own blog in a post which starts with: "I learned these days that my son, Mihnea, made a blunder while abroad". The information that Mihnea Nastase appeared with a 3rd Reich swastika on his arm in public was first published by Romanian magazine Kamikaze. In his post, Adrian Nastase explains that abroad with a grant, his son showed up at a party where several kinds were painting various signs on the arms, at the entrance, so that those who went out be recognized when coming back - and his son found himself with a swastika. Nastase says he was revolted to hear about this. Kamikaze magazine reports that the event took place at a Halloween party in Switzerland, organized by the high school attended by Adrian Nastase's youngest son. |

Exhibition debunks Dracula myth
Exhibition debunks Dracula myth
http://news.ninemsn.com.au/entertain...s-dracula-myth An exhibition in Romania aims to debunk the myths surrounding Walachian prince Vlad Tepes (the Impaler), who inspired Bram Stoker's bloodsucking character Dracula. "The exhibition is based on historical studies showing that the legends related to Vlad Dracula were aimed at presenting eastern Europe as a primitive land and a source of evil," Austrian curator Margot Rauch told AFP on Friday. Entitled "Dracula - Voivode and Vampire", the exhibit for the first time puts on display in Romania portraits of Vlad Tepes (who reigned twice, between 1456-1462 and then in 1476) borrowed from the Kunsthistoriches Museum in Vienna and the Schloss Ambras museum in Innsbruck. Manuscripts and engravings depicting him as a "blood-thirsty tyrant" are also on display. "Vlad Dracula was doubtlessly cruel, but not more so than other princes of his time," Rauch said. "In fact he was a victim of bad propaganda" from his western European peers. One of the engravings, dating back to 1500, shows Tepes having a meal under the eyes of a dozen impaled men, while others have their limbs chopped and their heads boiled in cauldrons. A large part of the exhibition is devoted to vampirism, several alleged cases of which were reported in the early 18th century, especially in southeastern Europe. Rauch however stressed that Vlad Tepes owes his reputation as a vampire to Bram Stoker's novel Dracula, published in 1897. The character has since been a source of inspiration for many movies, but Rauch said: "It's time to see Vlad Dracula in another light than that given by Hollywood." |

Holocaust Museum to Romania: scrap 'racist' coin
Holocaust Museum to Romania: scrap 'racist' coin
http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/...qGaMgD9HBEBS82 BUCHAREST, Romania — A leading Holocaust group has demanded that Romania's central bank withdraw from circulation a commemorative coin of a former church leader who held anti-Semitic views and called for Jews to leave Romania. Radu Ioanid, a director of the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum said he was "shocked" by the bank's decision to mint the coin depicting late Patriarch Miron Cristea, who led the Romanian Orthodox Church from 1925 to 1939. Ioanid said the patriarch, who was prime minister from 1938-1939, was responsible for revising the citizenship law, stripping about 225,000 Jews — or 37 percent of the Jewish population — of their Romanian citizenship. Ioanid demanded the bank withdraw the coin in a private letter sent to the National Bank Governor Mugur Isarescu on July 29 and later sent to the Associated Press. The National Bank of Romania spokesman Mugur Stet said Monday the coin was part of a collectors' series of five coins, minted in silver, with the country's five patriarchs who have headed the Romanian Orthodox Church since 1925, and not a special coin dedicated just to Cristea. Romania today has only 6,000 Jews. The country's governments have at times denied that the extermination of some 300,000 Jews and Gypsies during Holocaust even happened. |

Last evening,05.08.2010,a group of 3 nationalist young men, from Timisoara,Romania, were picked up by the police of the Dan Paltinisan footbal stadium , for flashing a banner which depicting a message of solidarity towards the finnish nationalist activist Henrik Holappa at the Poli Timisoara-Mypa '47 game, a game from the UEFA cup preliminaries. They were taken to an area where "the law enforcements" asked for ID ,then body-checked them and photografed them. Then they started gathering information about who Henrik Holappa is.They also took pictures of the banner wich said: "N.A.T. Supports Henrik Holappa Stop persecutions of nationalists. www.nat88.org". After aproximately 30 minutes, they where released because of lack of reasons to restrain, for they did nothing illegal, yet they where told that it is possible that they will be summoned to the police station next week, wich wouldn't be something unusual for the present system at power. FREEDOM FOR NATIONALISTS!

Senate unanimously adopts declaration condemning Holocaust
12 Octombrie 2010 http://www.financiarul.ro/2010/10/12...ing-holocaust/ The senators on Monday unanimously adopted a declaration on the Holocaust Day. The above-mentioned document was presented in the plenum of the law¬making body by chairman of the foreign policy commission Titus Corlatean. According to the text of the declaration, the senators stick to their attitude combating anti-Semitic and xenophobic manifestations or intolerance. “Romania’s Senate reaffirms its pledge to go on supporting, in point of legislation and institutions, the action meant to combat any anti-Semitic and xenophobic manifestations, racial discrimination and intolerance and supports the special importance the educational process has for correctly informing citizens, making them sensitive and responsible, especially the younger generation. The society as a whole must be informed correctly of the tragic effects of the racial hatred when it becomes a state policy … The entire assumption, in a lucid and honest manner, of the past is the foundation of our responsibility for the future,” reads the declaration that marks the commemoration of the Holocaust. President of the Federation of Jewish Communities of Romania Aurel Weiner thanked the senators for adopting the declaration and said that the assumption of this responsibility was “highly useful and deserves the gratitude of the 8,000 Jews still living in Romania of the 800,000 that used to live in the early 20th century.” Liberal Senator Varujan Vosganian said on the same occasion that the declaration was the expression of the political will as regards Romania’s contribution at world level to the recognition of all the recent realities, which must be “assumed in such a way that such atrocities should never happen again.” “It is through this door of pain, the Holocaust, that we must look at and understand the entire drama of the 20th century,” said the senator, who added that he himself was the heir of “a people that was the victim of the first genocide of the 20th century, the Armenian people.” Deputy Nicolae Paun, representative of the Gypsy community in the Chamber of Deputies, said in his turn that the declaration adopted by the Senate was “a proof of political maturity and responsibility to the minorities in Romania.” Ambassador of Israel in Bucharest Dan Ben-Eliezer also attended the above-mentioned commemorative meeting. |

Romania threatens Croatia in Schengen dispute
4 January 2011 | 12:27 | Source: Euobserver.com BRUSSELS -- Romania is threatening to create problems for Croatia's EU accession bid, euobserver.com reports. This comes in a diplomatic counter-attack against delays to its own entry into the EU's border-free Schengen zone, writes the online publication. Romanian foreign minister Teodor Baconschi in an interview with the daily newspaper Adevarul on Monday attacked Germany and France for linking Romania's Schengen bid to progress on corruption and organized crime. "The same rules that were applied to any other enlargement of the Schengen area must be respected," he said, noting that Romania had been promised to get into Schengen when it met purely "technical" requirements. "Let's have a look at Croatia's situation. We are supporting any EU enlargement to the western Balkans. But we can't accept that this is being done without CVM, as long as CVM is being kept in our case," he added in a thinly-veiled threat to hold Zagreb to ransom over the Schengen issue. The so-called Co-operation and Verification Mechanism (CVM) was imposed on Romania and its southern neighbor Bulgaria in an unusual move in 2007 because the European Commission and other EU states wanted to pressure the two countries to keep-up anti-corruption reforms after they entered the Union. Four years later, the CVM is still in place and Romania is still rated as one of the most corrupt countries in Europe. In a letter sent last month to the European Commission, German and French interior ministers said Romania and Bulgaria must make "irreversible progress" in terms of CVM monitoring before they can enter Schengen. Schengen enlargement has no legal connection to the CVM. But the proviso is also supported by the Netherlands and the Nordic countries, which believe speedy Schengen entry would remove an incentive for further reform and would help organised crime rings in the two countries to expand into other EU states. Romania's Baconschi also said that Bucharest could "unilaterally" ditch the CVM, explaining that it should be a two-way street and a co-operation platform rather than a "handicap." Romania's sabre-rattling seems to be directed primarily at Germany - Croatia's main supporter in the EU - rather than the Balkan state itself. But it could, in theory, delay the process.

UEFA charges Romania for pro-Mladic banner taunting Bosnian fans at Euro 2012 qualifier
By The Associated Press – 47 minutes ago NYON, Switzerland — Romania faces UEFA sanctions after its fans taunted opposing Bosnia-Herzegovina followers with a banner supporting alleged war criminal Ratko Mladic. UEFA says it has opened a disciplinary case after Romanian fans displayed the slogan "Free Mladic" at a 2012 European Championship qualifier in Bucharest last Friday. Earlier that day, the Bosnian Serb military commander appeared before war-crimes judges in The Hague for the first time ahead of his trial. UEFA rules prohibit "using sporting events for manifestations of a nonsporting nature." Romania, which won 3-0, and Bosnia both face UEFA charges for fans throwing objects in the stadium. UEFA's disciplinary panel will hear the case on June 16. http://www.google.com/hostednews/can...?docId=7078338

Amnesty Slates Romania Over Roma Housing
Rights organisation says authorities are depriving Roma people in Romania of one of their basic rights. Marian Chiriac Bucharest Romania’s Roma, who rank among the Balkan country's the poorest and most disadvantaged citizens, cannot access adequate housing because of the country’s legal system, according to a report issued on Thursday by the rights group Amnesty International. “When the authorities evict Roma communities against their will, without adequate consultation, notice or alternative housing, they are violating international treaties that the government of Romania has signed up to. This also applies to the resettlement of Roma communities to inadequate and segregated housing”, says Barbora Cernusakova, Amnesty International’s Researcher on Romania. In support of its allegations, Amnesty International cites the case of 56 Roma families which were forcibly evicted in December from the main Transylvanian city of Cluj, where some of them had been living for about 25 years. The community was not given sufficient notice, no consultation was carried out and no feasible alternatives to eviction were explored, Amnesty says. “Unfortunatelly, the situation hasn’t changed yet. Forty families are still living inhumane housing conditions near the city’s rubbish dump and a former chemical waste dump,” Adrian Dohotari, a civic activist from Cluj, said. Housing is still a major problem in Romania. Around 40 per cent of Romanians live in dwellings with no indoor toilets, baths or showers, according to the EU’s statistics office, Eurostat. Over half of Romanians live in overcrowded dwellings and 22 per cent live in dwellings with leaking roofs or which are damp, the Eurostat report adds. Romania is officially home to some 550,000 Roma, although it is widely believed that there are actually at least twice that number in the country. Many people of Roma origin do not declare their ethnicity due to the widespread prejudice they face.

Conference calls on Romania to acknowledge WWII war crimes
(JTA) -- A conference focusing on Romania's Holocaust-era war crimes in Ukraine and Moldova called on Romania to acknowledge and apologize for the murder of hundreds of thousands of Jews.
The conference, which ended Wednesday, on the anniversary of Kristallnacht, was convened to bring the full scope of World War II Romania’s fascist state-sponsored genocide to light. The conference examined Romania’s role in the Holocaust in Ukraine and other countries of the former Soviet Union, particularly Moldova. Convened by Ukrainian lawmaker Oleksandr Feldman and the Ukrainian Jewish Committee, which Feldman serves as president, the conference brought together some 70 participants from Ukraine and Moldova comprising a mix of Holocaust survivors, scholars and public figures. The Romanian ambassador to Kiev initially accepted the conference’s invitation but at the last moment declined to attend. There was, however, official representation by the embassies of Austria, Azerbaijan and Israel, as well as lawmakers from Ukraine and Moldova. “We are not demanding financial compensation from Romania,” Feldman said. “They cannot bring their victims back to life. Even though the Romanian ambassador did not attend the conference, we are pushing forward with this process until justice is achieved.” The conference adopted a series of three resolutions that Feldman called “a small first step of a long journey before us.” The resolutions call on Romania to recognize publicly and officially its role in the murder of hundreds of thousands of Jews from the territories of present-day Ukraine and Moldova; to issue a formal apology to the Jewish communities of Ukraine and Moldova; and to play an active role in cooperating with Ukrainian and Moldovan governmental and nongovernmental organizations in programs designed for memorializing Holocaust victims of Romania-occupied territories. Next to the Nazis, Romania was responsible for the deaths of more Jews during the Holocaust than any other German-allied country. During World War II, the Nazi-allied Romanian government was complicit in the murder of approximately 400,000 Jews, both on Romanian soil and in villages and forests throughout Ukraine and Moldova. http://www.jta.org/news/article/2011...wii-war-crimes
