The 1,000s of Germans massacred after WWII

31 Jul 2015

Seventy years ago on Friday, a munitions depot exploded in the Czechoslovakian town of Ústí nad Labem. For the thousands of Sudeten Germans who lived in the town, the event was a death sentence.

The explosion happened in the afternoon of July 31st, 1945. Around 27 people were killed, including seven Czechs.

World War II had ended just weeks before – and Czechoslovakia had begun to forcibly expel over two million Sudeten Germans who lived in the country.

So when the explosion happened, rumours quickly spread that the Germans were responsible.

What followed was a massacre.

All ethnic Germans had been forced to wear white armbands, making them easily recognizable – and on the day of the explosion, German men, women and children were mercilessly beaten and killed.

Some were shot dead. Others were thrown into the River Elbe and then shot at while they tried to swim to safety.

Part of the "fierce expulsion"

Those responsible for the massacre were Revolutionary Guards (a post-war Czech paramilitary group) alongside Soviet and Czech soldiers, as well as around 300 Czech civilians who had just arrived from Prague by train.

Mayor Josef Vondra tried to help the victims, as did many local Czechs. But the death toll continued to rise.

In the aftermath, the event was shrouded in controversy.

With an estimated 75,000 Czech citizens having been killed in forced labour camps under Nazi rule, Czech officials were unwilling to commemorate the Germans who lost their lives.

"This was a time of continental ruin," explained James Mayfield from the Institute for Research of Expelled Germans, "and [with] no tribunals to prevent war crimes or local violence.

"Over 50 million had died in the war anyway," Mayfield told The Local, "so the lives of 2,000 to 5,000 Germans at Ústí nad Labem were seen as largely insignificant."

The massacre was part of something much wider, Mayfield said – and what happened in Ústí was "only one of many violent examples of what historians and German expellees call the wilde Vertreibungen (fierce expulsion) of Germans from countries such as Czechoslovakia.

According to Mayfield, local vigilantes ignored instructions from Allied powers to make the expulsions as "orderly, humane and non-violent as possible."

Commemorating the victims

Ten years ago, former Czech foreign minister Cyril Svoboda unveiled a memorial plaque on the Aussiger Bridge over the River Elbe, where part of the massacre occurred.

"In memory of the victims of the violence of 31st July 1945," it reads in Czech and German.

A decade on, the bridge is the scene of further remembrance.

Organized by the Association of German Citizens in the Czech Republic, a special ceremony took place this Friday to commemorate the victims of the massacre.

As in previous years, Sudeten German Association chairman Bernd Posselt travelled to Ústí for the service.

Yet the ceremony was particularly important this year, Posselt told the Local, as for the first time, Czech politicians would be in attendance.

The service began at 3:30pm and was attended by current Ústí mayor Věra Nechybová, as well as members of German minority groups in the town.

There was also a remembrance service in the street at 1pm, to commemorate those killed in the original explosion.

And at 6pm, a church in the town will hold a special mass for the victims.

Czech-German relations since the massacre

The massacre divided the two countries for decades – with ongoing controversy as to why exactly it occurred.

The Czech government have since claimed that they were unable to stop massacres such as the one in Ústí, Mayfield said.

However, he argued: "all historical evidence suggests that most locals, government officials, and particularly the communist party were widely aware of the massacres."

"They either supported limited reprisals against the Germans, looked the other way, or even provided intelligence and names of German families."

Since the German expulsion from Czechoslovakia, the Czech government has refused German calls for compensation for these refugees – several thousand of whom died in the expulsion.

But in 1997, the German-Czech Declaration was founded.

The agreement saw both sides state that they would "not allow past legal and political issues to be a burden" on the relationship between the two countries.

"The 1997 German-Czech Declaration paved the way for Germany and the Czech Republic to become present-day friends and partners, duty-bound to uphold human rights, freedom and democracy," a spokesperson for the German Foreign Ministry told The Local.

"Ethnic cleansing"

"It would be inaccurate to depict German suffering as genocide as many victims and expellee lobbies do today," said Mayfield.

"It was, instead, alongside the 5,000,000+ Germans expelled from Poland, [one of] the largest and most organized ethnic cleansings in modern history outside of India and Pakistan."

White Europeans have been killing eachother for two milleniums, so what? The Germans, the Third Reich, Nazi party and Hitler is heavily demonized because they lost the war, the Soviets weren't any better than Germans.

The Forgotten WWII Battle of Halbe 1945

By Dr. Ingrid R. Zundel

In the early 1980s, I was working in the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C., doing research for my trilogy called “Lebensraum”, narrating my family’s flight from the Ukraine in 1943 under the protection of the retreating German forces. There, I came upon an article describing the last major World War II battle between the German Wehrmacht and the Russians that took place, as I remembered it in fragments, in the vicinity of Berlin. I was caught in its midst as an eight-year-old child when it happened.

This is what "our" historians should have spent the last 40 years revising rather than dancing to the jews tune at the jews convenience. The attacks on the Germans were racial attacks by the jews aided and abetted by Aryan renegades. It is a crying a shame that the movement has neglected this ongoing atrocity against our people

While it is excellent to see these video testimonies being made before it is too late it is a negative to attach them to the wider "revisionist" agenda. The crimes of violence, rape, torture, murder and dispossession of Germans that found themselves at the mercy of the allies stand alone as set in stone crimes against humanity and demand justice.
The movement must deal with the world as it is as each new generation comes along the atrocities committed against the Germans appear as just as heinous as any committed by Germans. That the fact that German perpetrators real or imagined were and are hunted down into their 90's is disgusting to us the movement but not to the outsiders.
However the point of genuine contention that needs to be emphasised is that perpetrators of crimes against Germans are alive and not being prosecuted. The sjw generation will find this disparity and inconsistency inexplicable. This is the point the "revisionists" if this is what they are need to emphasise. Further the testimonies need to be edited to 10 minutes maximum and concentrate on the atrocities committed against Germans and not greater political and revisionist issues.
I first read books about the atrocities visited on the Germans in the early 70's , testimonies that had been recorded in the late 40's and early 50's. Many civillians in the UK then believed "so what" the Germans deserved it.That view is no longer widespread among the western Aryan societies and these atrocities can now be mainstreamed.
I do understand why revisionists want to highlight their efforts through the German victims testimonies and I also accept that it is the self same perpetrators and their descendants, but I am one of the converted. The revisionist movement must take cogniscance of current political events: The mainstreaming of anti immigration racism for a start, Brexit, Trump their are millions out there educated by the internet not to accept court historians they must engage on their terms that is short sharp focused videos backed up with pictorial websites not how one would wish but how it is.

A forgotten genocide: the ethnic German cleansing. Germans migrated down the Danube in three major waves beginning more than 700 years ago, and settled in mountainous areas of Bohemia and Moravia. These Ethnic Germans became very prosperous and those in Hungary, Romania and Yugoslavia were known as Danube Swabians.

1939 the Czech President expelled German minority to be executed with utmost brutality resulting 1 million sudeten Germans losing their lives.

Many Ethnic Germans settled in St. Louis, USA

Through interviews with survivors, the memory of this sad period in human history is preserved, and hopefully provides peace to the almost 15 million souls lost.

The Sorry Fate of German POWs: Enslavement, Starvation and Murder

The Sorry Fate of German POWs: Enslavement, Starvation and Murder - The West

There was no “peace treaty” in place at the end of the War. German POWs were labelled “disarmed enemy forces” (DEF) rather than “prisoners of war” in order to skirt provisions of the Hague Land Warfare Convention which mandated humane treatment, including that which stated: “After the peace treaty, prisoners of war should be dismissed into their homeland within shortest period.” By this manipulation of justice, German POWS could be taken to the lands of their former enemies and used as slave labor for extended periods, often at the cost of their lives due to grim hardships encountered before, during and after transit. Furthermore, a German soldier designated as DEF had no right to any food, water or shelter, and could, as many thousands did, die within days.

There were no impartial observers to witness the treatment of POWs held by the U.S. Army. From the date Germany unconditionally surrendered, May 8, 1945, Switzerland was dismissed as the official Protecting Power for German prisoners and the International Red Cross was informed that with no Protecting Power to report to, there was no need for them to send delegates to the camps.

The Sorry Fate of German POWs: Enslavement, Starvation and Murder - In the East

In the communist realms, the conditions that German POWs, many just kids, endured on the Eastern Front were beyond grim and did not follow any accepted protocol for treatment of captured soldiers. Under the provisions of the Yalta Agreement, the U.S. and U.K. had agreed to the use of German POWs in the Soviet Gulag as “reparations-in-kind,” but comparatively few German were taken alive before Stalingrad. Most were shot and many were mutilated alive. Out of the 90,000 Germans who marched into Soviet captivity at Stalingrad, only 5,000 ever returned: 40,000 did not survive the march to the Beketovka camp, where another 42,000 perished of hunger and disease. Those POWs that made it alive to separate camps in Siberia and elsewhere in the western Soviet Union were forced into slave labor and endured frequent beatings, brutal torture, poisoning and execution. Thousands more captured soldiers were executed on the spot and thrown into mass graves. Food and water were always scarce, living barely primitive. The result was an unacceptable rate of death.

Buried Alive Screaming In The Night: German POW Survivors Describe Eisenhower’s Extermination Camps After WWII Had Ended

This is one of a series of published and planned articles detailing aspects of the Western Allies deliberate intention to murder approximately 1 million disarmed German POWs by means of unnecessary starvation, exposure, and illness.

On July 27, 1929, the Allies extended the Protective Regulations of the Geneva Convention for Wounded Soldiers to include prisoners of war (POWs). These regulations state: “All accommodations should be equal to the standard of their troops. The Red Cross supervises. After the end of the hostilities the POWs should be released immediately.” On March 10, 1945, Dwight Eisenhower, the Supreme Allied Commander of the Allied Expeditionary Force, disregarded these regulations by classifying German prisoners captured on German territory as “Disarmed Enemy Forces” (DEFs). The German prisoners were therefore at the mercy of the Allies and were not protected by international law. [i]

Expulsions of Germans after World War II (Part I)

By John Wear

Published: 2019-07-07

Introduction

One of the great tragedies of the 20th century was the forced expulsion of ethnic Germans from their ancestral homes in Europe after the end of World War II. The Allies carried out the largest forced population transfer—and perhaps the greatest single movement of people—in human history. A minimum of 12 million and possibly as many as 18.1 million Germans were driven from their homes because of their ethnic background. Probably 2.1 million or more of these German expellees, mostly women and children, died in what was supposed to be an “orderly and humane” expulsion.[1]

One estimate of the number of Germans expelled runs to 16.5 million: 9.3 million within the 1937 Reich borders and 7.2 million outside. The Germans within the 1937 Reich borders include 2,382,000 East Prussians, 1,822,000 East Pomeranians, 614,000 in Brandenburg east of the Oder, and 4,469,000 Silesians. The Germans outside the 1937 Reich borders include 240,000 in Memel and the Baltic States, 373,000 in Danzig, 1,293,000 in Poland, 3,493,000 in Czechoslovakia, 601,000 in Hungary, 509,000 in Yugoslavia, and 785,000 in Romania. The Russians did not expel many of their 1.8 million Volga Germans from the Soviet Union; instead, the Volga Germans were predominantly deported to other (distant) locations within the Soviet Union.[2]
