Hungary: A Black Hole on Europe's Map

An interview with G. M. Tamás by Jaroslav Fiala (A2 magazine)

Jaroslav Fiala (JF): In the past you have written on post-fascism. In recent years, the growing rise of nationalist and racist forces has taken place across Europe. What is your explanation for this phenomenon?

G. M. Tamás (GMT): The whole nature of European politics has changed after 1989: the two hegemonic blocs had disintegrated, after the Soviet threat which forced the internal compromise in the West resulting in the welfare state and the toleration of large West European communist parties and communist-influenced trade unions, ceased to exist. So did cease to exist the Western pressure which had set certain limits to Stalinist and post-Stalinist dictatorship. The Cold War equilibrium was over.

The more or less ‘proletarian’ counter-power together with the ‘adversary culture’ from academic Marxism to avant-garde cultural practices is gone, too. The compromesso storico – the key to the flowering of Europe from the 1960s to the 1980s – has become both unnecessary and impossible. The new states and their élites had to realise that old-style religion and nationalism is ineffectual, their foundations have crumbled, the Army and the Church are not the forces they used to be. Social integration, mass mobilization are now indirect, mediated through the media, if at all. A sense of integration for passive and isolated citizens can be offered only by political passions that can be exercised privately, without organization, without ideology proper, in an exclusively negative way. So explanations for social discontent can be understood chiefly as the result of ‘heterogeneous’ elements (in the sense of Georges Bataille), ‘outsiders,’ ‘foreigners,’ ‘immigrants,’ ‘gays,’ non-participants (welfare cheats, layabouts, the underclass in general). This does not need mass mobilization as in ‘classical’ fascism because it does not concern any parts of the ruling class or state élites, while fascism and National Socialism, of course, did. This is an authoritarian radicalism based not on hatred, but on contempt. The hyperactive passivity of old fascism gives way to the passive passivity of post-fascism.

JF: Let's focus on Hungary. The election showed a rightward, extremist shift, again. What is happening to your country?

GMT: It's a difficult question – and the most important one. First of all, this was another election where genuine right-wing and pseudo-left parties had a contest. The ‘left’ coalition combined elements of human rights liberalism, pro-European business liberalism and a very vulgar ‘left’ populism, with obviously unrealistic promises. These elements went very badly together. Viktor Orbán and his national conservatives simply refused to present a programme or an election manifesto at all. Their only slogan was “We'll continue!” Their policy is a combination of handouts to the middle class and to the middle class only, and of a very severe ‘law and order’ routine against everyone else. It's a simple and straightforward politics of repression: censorship of the media called ‘national unity’ (that is, no audible dissent), strongly chauvinist national education at all levels, a cult of ‘hard work’ persecuting the unemployed, especially the Roma poor, a macho talk of will, force, determination, action, ‘follow-the-leader,’ virility. A new national identity rooted in football and based on extreme right football supporters’ groups, contempt for intellectuals and a generalized hatred against all foreigners (both against our neighbours in the ‘successor states’ and against the treacherous, decadent West, not to speak of our coloured brethren).

The left has been presented – following the oldest recipe – as the agents of ‘abroad,’ le parti de l’étranger. At the same time, the governing party has lost hundreds of thousands of votes that went in part to the overt fascists. The malcontent just leave the country in droves. London is today the third largest Hungarian city. The general mood is glum, there is an atmosphere of suspicion and loathing. There is xenophobia and ethnicism without the slightest trace of national pride.

JF: How would you describe Viktor Orbán and his party Fidesz? Before 1989 you were friends...

GMT: Actually, we were friends up to the mid-1990s. Mr Orbán is a very able, very ruthless, totally unprincipled and pragmatic politician, a cunning tactician and a shameless demagogue. He keeps contradicting himself and affirms the opposite of what he has trumpeted a week ago, but since he doesn't give interviews and is never subjected to critical, let alone hostile questioning (the new House rules in Parliament make him almost exempt of any obligation to debate and to convince), he doesn't have to account for any of these. There was not a single TV debate between Fidesz and the opposition. His rhetoric is outrageously simplified: he's fighting the cosmopolitan powers of international finance and those of international leftist subversion to keep the Nation safe, reduce the cost of living and give back to Hungary its ancestral might, you know, a brave little David struggling with Goliath, and so on. The worst enemy can be recognized by his or her accusing the national conservative Hungarian government of anti-Semitism which does not exist, it is all a malevolent Jewish invention.

JF: Why is Orbán's Fidesz so popular? It seems that the party expropriated many anti-capitalist elements. Basically, it says: if you are against the socio-economic system, vote for us.

GMT: It is the usual right-wing anti-capitalism of the 1930s: it makes a difference between productive and parasitic capital. Mr Orbán makes special deals with Western industrial companies that are fully or partly tax-exempt and are attracted by the extremely low Hungarian wages, but declares war against banks and against global financial institutions such as the IMF. The decorative refurbishment of Budapest (in a very poor taste, I might add) is paid for by the EU, the anti-Hungarian monster. Mr Orbán is, like many before him, the champion of the national bourgeoisie, he is by now himself a very rich man.

Like the radical right everywhere, Fidesz is opposed to anybody it deems ‘improductive’ from bankers to intellectuals to the unemployed to the old-age pensioners and to university students. ‘Improductive’ equals ‘parasitic’ equals ‘subversive.’ By their ambivalent, semi-anti-capitalist talk they have managed to become the system itself and also the opposition to the system. As it is mostly the middle class who vote, there are about two million people who would fall for this propaganda done very skilfully by the Fidesz PR and indoctrination machine (a combination of Thatcherism and Putinism), undergirded by Mr Orbán's relentless activity and continuous initiatives in every regard.

Also people are getting restless. Mr Orbán has acquired tyrannical traits of late that might be, sooner or later, his undoing. (He seems to believe that he is actually governing Transylvania and Vojvodina as well, the fantaisiste Szekler flag is fluttering on the Budapest Parliament building, Hungarian government representatives are holding assemblies and participating in public ceremonies in Romania, without even paying courtesy calls on the local authorities. The official term is ‘reunification of the nation across the borders.’ This is nonsense, but extremely dangerous nonsense.)

JF: Is the influence of anti-communism significant? If so, how does the Hungarian right use it?

GMT: It is the old extreme-right formula: communism and liberalism are identical. They are inventions of rootless, misanthropic, mysterious circles, opposed to human nature and to the natural order. ‘We,’ true Hungarians, are conservative pragmatists, serving our own interests only, defined by a sober look at our own people and at our own country. We are no ideologists, we are looking for simple things, such as dignity, pride, well-being, a simple but comfortable life and we cherish tradition, be it the tradition of kings or peasants. And so on. And, of course, although this is only suggested, not stated, both communism and liberalism speak with a slightly Semitic accent.

JF: The election showed growing support for racist, anti-Semitic Jobbik as well. It seems this party has a lot of supporters among young people. Why?

GMT: The strength of Jobbik is its unsentimental, clear hatred of the Roma and its open wish to see them thwarted or, better, expelled. It's based on ‘moral panic’ like the old anti-Black racism of the antebellum American South: crime, proliferation of sensual, oversexed savages etc. Also it appeals to the young middle class by its anti-establishment stance. It sees history from the point of the view of the Axis, rejects all democratic bromides and does not respect the obligatory good manners of politics between, say, 1945 and 2000. This seems rebellious and original. They are using the symbols of the old Arrow-Cross party, hated and despised even by the more mainstream fascist tendencies, and which was known by its lunatic cruelty. This is the ultimate non-PC statement.

JF: How does Jobbik operate? Is it like the Golden Dawn in Greece (e. g. organizing ‘riot police,’ militias, services for the poor etc.)?

GMT: They are not doing anything for the poor, except promising that they will rid them of the Roma, but as to the rest, it's rather identical in method. The serial murder of six Roma executed by extreme right militants now in custody did not cause great revulsion. Instead, there are speculations how the Judeo-Bolshevik or Judeo-Liberal cabal has organized the assassinations in order to slander our people. In this climate, Jobbik has no difficult job. After the elections, the centre-left parties have propounded a ‘constructive dialogue’ or ‘debate’ with Jobbik. The fascist party cannot be kept in quarantine, declared the leadership of the Hungarian Socialist Party. In the national elections, the fascists were on the second place, now it is predicted that at the European elections they will reach the second position. In the local elections in the autumn, they might acquire 70-80 mayoralties in the provinces, pollsters say. In the new Hungarian Parliament, the select committee on culture and education will be presided by a fascist.

JF: There is a lot of hatred against Roma people in Hungary. Are there also activists defending them? Or is the civil society rather weak and passive?

GMT: There are such groups, of course, immensely unpopular. Civil society is not wholly passive, but it simply isn't anti-racist. This might change, though, although at the moment even the centre-left has abandoned the topic and is beginning to talk, too, of ‘public security in the countryside,’ the acceptable translation of ‘Gypsy crime.’

JF: How about the Hungarian left? Why did it fail in obtaining support?

GMT: Apart from being inept, uninspired, disunited and cowardly, the centre-left had no access to the main media (the internet reaches only the young middle class, solidly on the right) and failed to present an alternative. They fought a lukewarm campaign, in the style of ‘more of the same, but better,’ also they were mired in some really disgusting corruption affairs. Their slogans praising democracy were ineffectual, as ‘democracy’ means for most people impoverishment, foreign influence, inequality, unfair employment practices, in one word: failure. ‘Democracy’ makes people laugh and I must confess, I do understand them up to a point.

JF: Given the trajectory of development of post-communist countries after 1989, it seems that most of them are in deep trouble. What went wrong?

GMT: We are all pre-communist countries. But apart from this, Eastern Europe – and the whole world – is in deep trouble. Capitalism, as we all know, is crisis-ridden, but the old consolations don't apply. Parliamentarism and ‘the free press’ are empty even where they are tolerated by the system better than in Hungary. The left liberal recipe of redistribution is underminded by racism, xenophobia, misogyny and the like. Poverty is on the increase, but equality is hated. Anti-capitalism, too, has reverted to its pre-Marxian moralistic, often nonsensical form. Radical critical thought floats in an empty space, as the old workers’ movement is dead. A replacement for the industrial proletariat is unlikely to be found.

JF: Do you see any light at the end of the tunnel? Or are we simply walking toward more exploitation, authoritarianism and new forms of fascism?

GMT: I would be sorely tempted to say yes. But to say that would mean that we should give up thinking and feeling, and I am not prepared to propose quite that. There have been dark ages before. Our task is to keep our little lights alive and do our duty, regardless of failure, regardless of consequences. The continuity of a tradition opposed to exploitation and oppression is vital, even if we are only links in a chain, and will be probably – and justly – forgotten by a better age that might or might not come.

JF: You said that the sense of social integration can be offered only by political passions that can be exercised privately. Do you think this can be achieved only through new xenophobia? Are there any better political passions we could offer to isolated citizens today?

GMT: Passions can certainly be lived in other ways, too. And better passions may be on offer sometimes. Genuine social discontent also can be expressed by various versions of ‘moral panic’ but they won't amount to anything much as they cannot be sustained in the way that movements (based, after all, on personal, actual, physical, temporal togetherness and shared ideals) could.

JF: Could you say a little more about the differences between the ‘classical’ and new fascism? Are there any other contrasts or similarities?

GMT: ‘Classical’ fascist movements in all their variants have been the movements of war veterans, of soldiers, with military ideas of leadership, following and mobilization. But the age of mass armies is over. More important, fascism appeared amid the collapse of the Old Régime and was a reaction to socialism, to universalist and radical proletarian revolutions. This whole context has disappeared with the defeat of the Axis in 1945, with the cold war equilibrium and its demise, de-colonization and the end of the Soviet system in 1989. What survives, apart from nostalgia for the very worst, is the inability of late capitalism to integrate the ‘heterogeneous.’ The fundamental idea of modernity, civic equality through representation and public guarantees for private lives, is becoming increasingly unthinkable, witness the anti-immigrant policies of the most ‘respectable’ Western governments. Quite simply, the conceptual ‘force’ necessary for imagining a community not based on ethnicity or on common interest narrowly defined, is lacking.

JF: You also said that we are all ‘pre-communist’ countries. What does it mean (e. g. combination of reactionary politics, cowardly and moralistic left or other things)?

GMT: Well, of course, since there was no communism yet – at best, an egalitarian state capitalism with quite a few advances of civilization, beyond tuberculosis, syphilis, mass starvation and death from freezing – we are all pre-communist, even if there won't be any communism, ever. I don't think that the undeniable moral failures and sins of the contemporary left are in any sense decisive, however disappointing and saddening. Those are probably only consequences. There is no ‘outside’ to capitalism, as there was in the times of Rosa Luxemburg and Lenin. (In their case, large peasant societies, colonial or not. There isn't a revolutionary ‘outside,’ either.)

What kind of ‘adversary culture’ can be kept alive in the absence of a real adversary? Our little Marxist or anarchist conventicles express internal contradictions of late capitalism, but there is nothing outside the unified horizon of the system. It is for the first time that there is Marxist theory – actually, quite a number of excellent works and initiatives – without a Marxist movement. There have been socialists in the nineteenth century – sharply criticized by Lenin and Trotsky – who thought their work was simply a preparation for crises that would be produced by history and not by their own activity. It was waiting for reality to create the opportunity for liberation and emancipation. Neither Mensheviks nor Bolsheviks were proven right ultimately. This is a period ‘after history,’ if we mean modern history engendered by the problems of bourgeois society. These problems are sometimes solved by decadence and obsolescence rather than by anything else, but they remain mostly unsolved. Contemporary reactionary political fashions and illiberal regimes show the deep discontent but are, naturally, making things only worse. This is the situation which we are asked – by events – to address. •

G. M. Tamás was a blacklisted dissident Hungarian intellectual in the 1970s and 1980s, after the changes he served as a member of the Hungarian Parliament and, later, as the Director of the Institute of Philosophy of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. He had become a Marxist in the early 2000s and is currently unemployed. His collected philosophical papers Törzsi fogalmak (Tribal Concepts) (1999) were followed by a Festschrift in his honour in 2008. His works have been translated into 14 languages.

Jobbik leader charged with being a spy for Russia

15 May

A leader of the right-wing Hungarian political party Jobbik is being accused of spying on the EU for Russia.

Bela Kovacs is an elected member of the European Parliament and a leader of Jobbik. The political party Jobbik is a “far-right” anti-immigration/Euroskeptic party. However it is somewhat of a lone wolf in the greater European far-right community because it espouses Turanism. The group considers Hungarians to be Eurasian and not part of Western civilization.

Hungary is one of the most conservative/right-wing and Euroskeptic nations in Europe. It may be the first to leave the EU. The conservative “Soft-Euroskeptic” Fidesz party holds 59% of the Hungarian parliament. The Christian Democratic Party hold another 8%, but they are very right-wing compared to other Christian Democrats in Europe. Jobbik holds another 11.5%. Only 21.5% of the Hungarian parliament is held by left-wing parties and even then, these are probably more centrist compared to the left-wing in most of the rest of Europe.

Jobbik runs it’s own alliance of parties, but these are very small parties. Jobbik’s only alliance member with elected MEPs is the British National Party and they are expected to lose their seats. The BNP was splintered multiple times. Another one of their alliance partners, the Eastern German NPD is poised to elect its first MEP ever since the German Supreme Court nullified the election threshold.

From Politics Hungary…

Hungary’s chief prosecutor said he had asked the president of the European Parliament to remove the immunity rights of a Jobbik MEP who has been suspected of spying, daily Magyar Nemzet reported in its Thursday issue.

Geza Fazekas, a spokesman for the Chief Prosecutor’s Office, told the paper, citing anonymous sources, that the Constitution Protection Office had filed a case against MEP Bela Kovacs for allegedly spying against European Union institutions. Kovacs is accused of regularly conspiring with Russian diplomats and travelling to Moscow on a monthly basis. Kovacs is married to a Russian-Austrian dual citizen, who had allegedly been working for the KGB earlier, the paper said.

The Central Investigating Chief Prosecutor’s Office has started an investigation in the case for crimes punishable with a 2-8 year prison sentence, Fazekas said, adding that the case is classified and further information cannot be disclosed

Hungary asks European Parliament to lift Jobbik MEP's immunity

The Chief Prosecutor's office said in a statement it had made the request but declined to specify the reasons because it said they were classified.

World Bulletin / News Desk

Hungary said on Thursday it had asked the European Parliament to lift the immunity of MEP Bela Kovacs, a member of the far-right Jobbik party, after investigating him in relation to an unspecified crime.

Kovacs denied any wrongdoing and rebuted a Magyar Nemzet newspaper report that he was suspected of spying for Russia. He also said he was willing to waive his immunity to clear his name.

"I have never been a member of any secret service, Hungarian or foreign," Kovacs told a news conference. "I never cooperated with them, neither have there been attempts to recruit me on their part."

The Chief Prosecutor's office said in a statement it had made the request but declined to specify the reasons because it said they were classified.

Espionage carries a two-to-eight year sentence under Hungarian law.

In a statement to Reuters, prosecution spokesman Geza Fazekas said: "A classified document contains the detailed justification of the (immunity suspension) proposal.

As the case is classified we cannot give further information on the matter."

Kovacs said he had had no idea of the investigation until he read about it on Thursday. He called on the Hungarian Parliament's National Security Committee to hear him out in a public meeting.

Kovacs, 54, was educated at the Moscow Institute of International Relations in the Soviet Union in the 1980s and spent much of his adult life in Moscow as the owner of an international trading business, according to his public resume.

He returned to Hungary in 2004, the year when the country joined the European Union. The following year, he joined the far-right Jobbik party, which was then only a small group of young enthusiasts.

In the European Parliament, Kovacs helped found the Alliance of European National Movements, a far-right alliance that until recently had among its members France's Front National. He is now chairman of the group.

Magyar Nemzet cited unnamed sources to say there were suspicions in Brussels that the AENM had clandestine links with Russia, which Kovacs denied.

"I must reject the allegation that the Alliance of European National Movements would be under Russian influence of the recipient of Russian financing," he said.

The MEP is currently third on Jobbik's European Parliament elction list. Opinion polls suggest this would be high enough to get elected again in this months European Parliament election.

Jobbik accused of posing national security risk

BY ZOLTÁN SZÉCSI

Comment [25]

Concerns over Jobbik’s international ties and support among “sleeping agents” are leading some to suggest the party may pose a national security risk, nol.hu reports.

In January, Jobbik leader Gábor Vona stated in a speech, “masses of our sleeping agents await our victory in state administration. They are still wary of showing their support in public, but we can count on them when the time comes.”

Zoltán Balczó, Jobbik’s vice president, seconded Vona’s words, saying that “these professionals have already assured us of their affiliation, and will make their move should Jobbik form a government.” When a Népszabadság reporter asked him if these “sleeping agents” can be found in state and public administration, on the level of institutional leaders, in jurisdiction or among the police, Balczó replied that they can be found “in almost all areas.”

Government-related sources go as far as saying that Jobbik’s international relations may present a risk to Hungary’s national security, especially the links they hold with Russia. Last week, Magyar Nemzet reported that the half-covered and secret activities of Russian intelligence have intensified in Hungary in the wake of the crisis in Ukraine.

In addition to Fidesz, 4K! has also been curious about Jobbik’s Russian relations, as they demanded earlier this year that “Jobbik reveals its links to Russian energy corporations, oligarchs and the imperial endeavors of Putin,” especially because of their unequivocal support of the Paks agreement.

4K! also pointed out that while Jobbik fiercely opposes the “sell out of the country” in words, they held a conference together with representatives of the aggressively expanding Gazprom energy corporation in Hungary last fall.

Richard Field, the American businessman and philanthropist who has supported several charities and community initiatives in Hungary, believes that Jobbik is financially supported by Iran. As he writes, “One can only guess how Jobbik finds the money to maintain its presence in the media, to equip several thousand civil guardsmen, to distribute millions of copies of its free newspaper, to establish its own network of private schools, to publish their magazine called Barikád!, let alone to run notoriously anti-Semitic websites such as Kuruc.info.

“Jobbik also started to disseminate its newsletter in two million copies a couple of months ago. Rumor has it that the party has received an illegal political donation of several million euros from the Iranian government.”

Jobbik claim that they pose no risk to Hungary’s national security as their resources are “all transparent” and they “can account for the last penny of their donations.” Concerning the party’s Eastern – Russian, Iranian and Turkish – relations, Balczó told Népszabadság that these are their most “explicit” diplomatic relations. According to Balczó, it has to be acknowledged that these countries present a huge market for Hungary’s economy, and Viktor Orbán has raised Jobbik’s program from 2009 to a governmental level with the “Eastern opening.”

Why do all these neo-liberals love the neo-nazis in Ukraine but not in Hungary? Is it just their stance on Russia.

They love the Ukrainian nationalists because the neo-cons Nuland and company used them to put their man, Yatsenyuk (a neo-con and international banker), at the head of the 'government' the neo-con-led coup installed. And they hate us because the Hungarian public turfed their men out of political power in Hungary. Simple as that.

Jobbik overtakes Socialists in EP election poll

BY MTI

Comment [35]

The radical nationalist Jobbik has increased its support to overtake the Socialist Party among decided voters, business weekly HVG reported on Thursday, citing pollster Median’s latest results.

Jobbik came in second after ruling Fidesz both across the whole sample and in the decided group.

Support for Fidesz has further increased to 56 percent and for Jobbik to 17, while the Socialists were favoured by 14 percent of respondents with a clear party choice, Median said.

Green LMP and opposition E-PM were each backed by 4 percent of decided voters, and the Democratic Coalition by 2 percent, all below the European parliamentary threshold of 5 percent.

Forty-six percent of all respondents said they would cast their ballot at the election set for May 25.

Asked about the government’s performance in the past four years, 44 percent of respondents voiced satisfaction.

Median conducted its representative survey between April 25 and 29.

Defense minister accosted, called “traitor” by pro-Jobbik group
BY DAVID O'RIORDAN

Comment [8]

Hungarian Minister of Defense Csaba Hende was subject to verbal abuse from pro-Jobbik demonstrators on his way to his Ministry building last week.

Among those present was former Jobbik MP Tamás Gaudi-Nagy, who spotted Hende as he left parliament, and started calling him a traitor.

Several of the demonstrators went after Hende. One woman, at about a meter’s distance from the Minister, said, “Hang your head in shame, traitor to Hungary!” After about a minute of this, Hende turned to the woman and said, “Madame, is there something I can help you with? Please calm down.”

The incident has taken place as Jobbik has sought to disassociate itself from Gaudi-Nagy, who also caused controversy recently for his role at a demonstration during which a Vojvodina Hungarian politician was assaulted. [hvg.hu]

Struggle against social injustice Jobbik’s biggest task, says Vona

The biggest task facing the radical nationalist Jobbik party in the European Parliament is ironing out the social and existential disparities between western countries and Hungary, the party’s leader told a news conference on Wednesday.

I'm going to guess this isn't true, they're trying to pull a Jew-commanded Golden Dawn-style frame up and crackdown on the powerful Jobbik.

Even if they did get money from Iran, how many Hungarian politicians are probably on the payroll of America and Israel? Better yet, how many of them are as Jobbik pointed out, ISRAELI CITIZENS IN THE HUNGARIAN GOVERNMENT .

Default 7 Great Quotes From Jobbik

Members of Jobbik attend an inauguration ceremony for the Hungarian guard.

Quote:
1. Sandor Porzse, a prominent member of Jobbik, told a French website in a 2012 interview that Hungarians “are victims of a Jewish conspiracy to colonise our land and rob our resources”.

2. Marton Gyongyosi, another member of the party, caused a controversy in 2012 when he called for a list of Jews who pose a “national security risk”

3. Gabor Vona, the party leader, said in 2010 that “the Land Law has to be amended so that the Solomons cannot buy land in Hungary”.

4. The Magyar Garda, the 3,000-strong paramilitary group founded by Vona and later disbanded by a court, started calling the capital “Judapest”. Orthodox Jews in the supermarket were saluted with a raised arm “Heil Hitler” and posters of the socialist party were defaced with Stars of David.

5. In 2014 Tibor Ágoston, the deputy chairman of Jobbik’s Debrecen and Hajdú-Bihar County organisation, referred to the Holocaust as “holoscam”.

6. Krisztina Morvai, an MEP for the party and Jobbik’s presidential candidate once ranted: “So-called proud Hungarian Jews should go back to playing with their tiny little circumcised tails.”

7. However, Jobbik’s main target is Hungary’s Roma, or gypsy, minority which accounts for around 8-9% of the population. Jobbik says it wants to stop “gypsy crime,” create ghettoes for Roma “deviants” and create a rural “gendarmerie” of the sort last seen in Hungary before World War II.

Jewish responses to the European elections

Quote:
It’s no secret that Jewish organizations have been strongly in favor of the EU and its policies promoting immigration and multiculturalism. So it’s no surprise that they are quite negative about the results of the elections for the European Parliament. A Jerusalem Post article gives some reactions (“Far-right’s election success worries European Jewry“). Hungary’s Jobbik and Greece’s Golden Dawn are seen as the most worrisome.

The [American Jewish Committee] bemoaned the fact that Jobbik is now the second largest Hungarian party in the continental legislature, while Greece’s Golden Dawn, a party which utilizes Nazi imagery and whose leaders are open in their admiration of Adolf Hitler, is now in the parliament for the first time and that Austria’s hard right FPO party came in third with just over a fifth of the vote, obtaining four seats. Daniel Schwammenthal, Director of the AJC Transatlantic Institute said that while the “extent to which these parties will be able to unite to influence European policy remains to be seen,” their presence in the legislature will still “at a minimum, provide a soapbox from which to propagate their vile hatred.” …

Ipsos poll: Jobbik in second place, Fidesz maintains strong lead

Hungary’s ruling Fidesz party has retained its strong lead while radical nationalist party Jobbik occupies second place, a poll by Ipsos published on Thursday showed. Whereas the Socialist Party is weakened it still captures the biggest support on the left wing, the survey found.

Since the European parliamentary elections only support for the Socialists has waned, declining three percentage points to eight percent among all voters in the June poll. Fidesz stood retained its level of 37 percent while Jobbik also stayed unchanged at 12 percent.

The Democratic Coalition led by Ferenc Gyurcsany added a point to stand at 4 percent while E-PM headed by Gordon Bajnai stayed level at 2 percent. Green party LMP had the backing of 3 percent.

In the camp of decided voters, Fidesz captured 58 percent, Jobbik 18 percent, the Socialists 10 percent, DK 6 and E-PM 4 percent. LMP was also favoured by 4 percent of committed voters.

Jobbik to condemn Ukrainian massacre in Parliamentary resolution

Today, Jobbik submitted a motion to the Hungarian National Assembly in order to issue a resolution to condemn the Eastern Ukrainian genocide conducted upon the orders of Kiev's Government, along with the Western supporters of the massacre, as well as to promote Hungarian-Ruthenian autonomy in the Lower Carpathian region - says Jobbik MP Márton Gyöngyösi.

In Jobbik's opinion, as he puts it, Kiev's government attacks its own citizens on an ethnic basis, and these actions are constantly supported by Western governments via political, financial, moral and secret service assistance, as well as by overlooking the violations of the law and the Ukrainian government's cooperation with Chauvinistic local militia.

The events of the past few weeks, the aggressive behaviour of the Kiev government as well as the violations of law conducted amidst the indifference of the Euro-Atlantic world do not promote peace at all; in fact, they project the horrible image of a new cold war, with regard to which the European Union and the United States of America are gravely responsible for intensifying the tension - says Márton Gyöngyösi.

The politician points out that over one hundred thousand Ukrainian citizens have already been forced to leave their homes and seek refuge abroad, the fights have already claimed hundreds of innocent civilian casualties, which raises the suspicion that Kiev may be orchestrating a wilful and systematic genocide in the area of Donetsk and Luhansk Oblasts.

Jobbik condemns the application of violence and points out that Hungary is fundamentally interested in a peaceful settlement of the conflict, considering that the Lower Carpathian region has a significant Hungarian population as well as a Ruthenian community who have always been in a historical communion with the Hungarian nation, and both are now under constant threat by the Chauvinistic and anti-minority policies of the Kiev Government - concludes Márton Gyöngyösi's press release.

The EU-provoked Russian boycott causes severe economic damage

Mon, 08/11/2014 - 19:07

Jobbik would claim damages from the European Union for the hundred billion HUF lost by Hungarian manufacturers due to the loss of the Eastern market.

Russia's boycott on agricultural and food products of EU-origin causes severe damage to Hungarian farmers and manufacturers, therefore Jobbik urges the Hungarian government to start bilateral negotiations with Moscow to solve the issue. After assessing the losses, the government should claim damages from Brussels since it was the EU sanctions that prompted the boycott – said Jobbik MP Márton Gyöngyösi in his press conference.

The politician reminded the public that Russia had imposed a ban on EU products in response to the EU sanctions. This causes an economic disadvantage for Hungary, blocking our exports to the East - explained Márton Gyöngyösi.

Jobbik calls upon the government to follow the example of several other EU countries and claim damages from Brussels, set up an inter-governmental committee of Hungary and Russia, and begin bilateral negotiations. Gyöngyösi reminded that Hungary had a strategic relationship with Russia, due to the treaty on the Paks nuclear power plant or the ongoing negotiations on the South Stream pipeline, for example - he listed.

Even though a major part of the Hungarian press downplayed the issue, Hungarian farmers and exporters did suffer significant losses as a result of the boycott. The Hungarian Chamber of Commerce and Industry has also pointed out the drawbacks, experts estimate losses around nearly a hundred billion HUF – said Gyöngyösi. He added that the boycott mostly hit around a thousand Hungarian small and medium enterprises that produce 25 per cent of the export to the East.

The politician said this was especially alarming in a situation when our export opportunities to the West are also diminishing, while the highly disadvantageous EU agreement with the South American countries caused an influx of cheap products, further aggravating the situation of Hungarian traders.

That's why Hungary needs to stop acting as the mouthpiece of the European Union and initiate bilateral negotiations with Russia, then assess the losses and hold Brussels accountable for them - concluded Márton Gyöngyösi.

Jobbik condemns the latest provocation committed in the Ukrainian conflict by NATO, the cover organization working for the promotion of US geopolitical interests.

Just when the secret US-Russia meeting in Finland and the multilateral negotiations in Minsk seemed to have triggered a slow remission in this tension-ridden region and the affected parties have begun a dialogue, the aggressive accusations of NATO may result in increasing distrust and an intensification of the crisis. The North Atlantic alliance has made such absurd allegations that there are around a thousand Russian soldiers fighting in the Ukraine, even though they cannot present credible evidence - wrote Jobbik MP Márton Gyöngyösi in his press release.

He added that the deterioration of Western relations was clearly not in the interests of Russia. Neither does this tension serve the real interests of European countries since the sanctions imposed on Russia and the Eastern state's countermeasures cause significant economic losses for all European countries, including Hungary. The destruction and market loss of companies producing goods for and the industries depending upon the Russian market as well as the enfeeblement of the multi-polar diplomacy of EU countries serve but one interest: that of the United States of America. There is no European country that could profit from a conflict potentially instigated by the USA.

So Jobbik Movement for a Better Hungary calls upon the Hungarian government and diplomatic corps to stop serving American interests unconditionally and finally stand for Hungary's and our region's real interests and urge to continue the dialogue that began in Minsk in order to solve the Ukrainian conflict. Jobbik also calls upon the Hungarian political parties, especially the extreme leftist liberal formations to remain passive this time and suspend their activities to serve foreign interests for a while, since all of their recent public statements have been causing irreparable damage for Hungary.

Jobbik Movement for a Better Hungary categorically condemns the decisions made at the recent NATO summit in Wales since they increase the tensions with Russia and are gravely contradictory to the careful remission process that seemed to take shape with the Minsk negotiations and the truce in Ukraine - wrote Márton Gyöngyösi, the deputy leader of Jobbik's parliamentary group in his press release on Saturday.

The communiqué says that Jobbik is astounded and indignant on account of the statements made by Prime Minister Viktor Orbán in this matter, since they reflect a subservient attitude towards the aggressive Western politics, and particularly US geopolitical goals, even at the expense of Hungary's security. Márton Gyöngyösi says that even though a truce has been achieved between the fighting parties in Ukraine as of Friday evening, the participants of the Newport NATO summit, including the Hungarian government, have agreed on provocative steps that increase the tensions with Russia yet again, such as NATO exercises planned in the Baltic states and Ukraine, deployment of NATO troops in Central Europe or increasing offensive military capabilities.

Jobbik reminds the public that the Orbán government has already made a short-sighted and self-destructive decision to grant NATO's request and protect Baltic airspace with Hungarian aircraft. This means that if any provocation takes place in a region neighbouring Russia, the Hungarian air force would be in the forefront of a confrontation with the Russian army.

The bear is no toy

Jobbik says Viktor Orbán is committing a grave historic mistake by relying on NATO protection and getting Hungary involved in a geopolitical conflict of great powers with the actual frontline stretching along our very borders. The Orbán administration has navigated itself into a controversial trap where it expects the same military organization to protect Hungary and guarantee the country's security whose irresponsible, aggressive and provocative policies have brought on the Ukrainian crisis, keeps intensifying the conflict with Russia and has marred Hungary's international reputation, credibility and thus our security by having run several dubious military "missions" in the past decade; all in an effort to promote US geopolitical interests.

Jobbik's foreign policy expert states that the conclusion of Hungarian history is that the West has never protected Hungary in any conflict, so the patriotic party finds the government's hypocritical explanation incomprehensible and unacceptable in a situation when our country is increasingly exposed.

The party believes that NATO's openly anti-Russian policy has reached a pivotal point where there is now an imminent danger to Hungary and the Central European region, since it is dragging us into a geopolitical conflict that is contradictory to the interests of our region. In this situation, Jobbik calls upon the Hungarian government to stop agreeing to decisions that pose a risk to our security, and review Hungary's membership in NATO.

U.S President's speech unveiled "NGOs" serving American interests

Fri, 09/26/2014 - 12:32

In Jobbik's view, US President Barack Obama's statements made at the conference organized by Clinton Global Initiative openly admit that the US uses a worldwide network of agencies disguised as independent, non-governmental and charity organizations in order to constantly interfere with the internal affairs of other countries and to exercise pressure on their governments, thus violating the principle of national sovereignty. The enthusiastic Hungarian reactions to Obama's statements reveal which parties and organizations are the most dedicated representatives of American interests in our country. Jobbik had already pointed out what national security risks are posed by the American funding of non-governmental organizations related to Hungarian leftist-liberal political parties, that's why the radical party submitted a bill to the Parliament in October 2013 to register each organization that receives foreign funding exceeding one million HUF. As we remember, Fidesz collaborated with the leftist-liberal parties and swept our bill off the table without any proper explanation.

Jobbik has been consistent in pointing out that the US uses a network of NGOs as a means of secret diplomacy in order to realize its geopolitical goals, and this network is capable of undermining governments, destabilizing countries, causing crises or even triggering bloody civil wars. The Eurasian "colour revolutions" of the past decades from Georgia to Kyrgyzstan and even to neighbouring Ukraine have all been the manifestations of these American machinations. We all remember that Hungary has been explicitly threatened several times by such influential persons as Bilderberger EU Commissioner Viviane Reding or Charles Gati, who is related to the American Democratic Party. They have openly interfered with Hungary's internal affairs, going as far as to talking about toppling the Hungarian government. We must also mention the anti-Hungarian activities of such organizations openly funded by US money as the Soros Foundation, the Student Network, or Gordon Bajnai's Patriotism and Progress foundation that received one billion HUF as financial support.

Jobbik says that the admission heard from the mouth of the US President and the threat to further increase the pressure reveal the significant loss of US influence, but they also mean a boundary not to be crossed, and all sovereign countries must protest against it at every forum available. Jobbik calls upon the Hungarian government to finally take some effective steps to protect the sovereignty of the Hungarian nation.

[very good interview on foreign policy]

Sun, 09/28/2014 - 10:04

World War III in the making?

In the past few decades, the power of the USA and the West was not consolidated, in fact it was in a relative decline, which means that the world became multi-polar. If the US and especially its power elite fail to realize it soon enough, and continue trying to use their existing minimal competitive edge to Americanize the whole world, then we are about to face a conflict unheard of before. In other words, it's not Putin who can prevent a worldwide conflict but the fanatic American elite who seem to have lost their sense of reality - said Márton Gyöngyösi, the vice chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Hungarian National Assembly and deputy leader of Jobbik's parliamentary group in an interview with Bar!kád magazine.

- Our world has never been free of conflicts, but as long as wars were fought in distant continents, only a few well-informed experts were contemplating about the interrelation of certain events. At the time of a sudden and unexpected outbreak of an apparently intensifying conflict right next door at the border of Europe, foreign policy suddenly is in the focus of public attention. Has the Ukrainian crisis increased the importance of foreign policy in Hungary?

- In an ideal world, foreign policy only has an indirect impact on the life of a community, due to its covert nature. Of course, diplomats sometimes need to confront each other openly to represent their national interests, but diplomacy typically analyses the ongoing processes from the background, and does its best to efficiently enforce national interests in an ever-changing frame of reference. The diplomacy of a country can be considered successful either if it is able to exercise a decisive influence on ongoing processes and adjust them to the interests of the particular nation or if it can provide an accurate analysis of processes, predict their direction and assess their effects and consequences. Only a few great powers are capable of doing the first. A small country like Hungary can only influence foreign policy events in a limited, local manner in our immediate environment, so we are usually given the second option. What kind of performance have we seen from the Hungarian ministry of foreign affairs in this regard? How much can they influence processes at a micro level, efficiently analyse geopolitical processes and represent our national interests, predicting the development of certain situations? Not in the least bit. The balance of the past 24 years of Hungarian diplomacy is disastrous, it shows nothing but a list of failures. If we hadn't had a Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the period since the collapse of Communism, nobody would have noticed.

– This must be the exaggeration of a politician in opposition…

– I don't think so. If you remember any success in our national strategic policy or the more general area of foreign policy, please share it with me and the readers. I don't remember any. Up until the past few years, Fidesz- and Socialist-led governments have been trying to outboast each other about who had more merit in integrating Hungary into the Euro-Atlantic sphere. Nowadays the Orbán government, which applies patriotic rhetoric and advocates the thought of a struggle for independence, speaks less about integration because it has become clear by now that the European Union is an institutionalized and bureaucratic structure used for the total economic deprivation and colonization of our country and the whole region. Meanwhile, NATO, the military-defence dimension of Euro-Atlantism, has degraded Hungary and the whole of Central-Eastern Europe into a tool of Western, and especially American geopolitical interests. Considering the experience of the past 24 years and the challenges towering ahead of us, we can state clearly and definitely that Euro-Atlantic integration was nothing but the modern colonization of Hungary through the betrayal and collaboration of the Hungarian political elite in power at the time of the collapse of Communism, and Hungary was eventually politically subdued to the interests of Western power centres by completely giving up our national sovereignty. The reason why the Socialist governments are less responsible for this is because they are clearly and obviously opposed to the concept of nations, they hardly care if the national ideal is subdued by Bolshevik internationalism or American neoliberal globalism; what matters for them is that nation states should be destroyed or at least subordinated to a supranational power. And the reason why the Antall and Orbán governments bear an outstanding responsibility in particular, is because they were voicing a national rhetoric while they yielded to the global underlying power exactly the same way, thus misleading the well-meaning groups of the society who were ready to make sacrifices for our nation. In fact, these governments did do their job a little differently: just so that the fraud and mimicking could be even better. They used some symbolic issues as a façade so that the hidden intention - the complete colonization of Hungary - could never be revealed.

Heavy weaponry, IMF

– Our exposure and the complete lack of an independent, sovereign diplomacy has never been so pronounced as now, during the Ukrainian crisis…

– Indeed. The complete lack of sovereign diplomacy, or more accurately, servility and utter amateurism are palpable. We have already talked about the submissiveness to the Euro-Atlantic power, now let's look at the lack of expertise. In your first question you mentioned that the Ukrainian crisis was sudden and unexpected. The outbreak of the conflict may indeed have been unexpected for the general public, but if it caused any surprise in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and it does seem so based on their hasty and belated actions, then we are in tremendous trouble. This means that our diplomacy does not do its job properly (if at all), does not analyse the processes with the necessary expertise, and does not prepare for their consequences. Ever since its establishment, Ukraine has been a highly unstable state with economic and social tensions; a time bomb ticking away. Besides, the current crisis had obvious earlier signs: the "orange revolution", which carried all of the symptoms of the current conflict ten years ago, even some of the actors were the same: the pro-Russia Yanukovich, the winner of the elections was facing the Yushchenko-Timoshenko duo, who received an obvious and efficient financial, moral, media and intelligence support of the West for their coup attempt at the time. It was some kind of a dress rehearsal for the events going on right now. Ten years ago, the attempt resulted in a stalemate, conserving Ukraine in a state of total instability. So you can say whatever you like about this conflict, but it is certainly not unexpected.

– The time, the manner and the depth of the outbreak of the conflict may have caused some surprise, however.

- Although you cannot expect clairvoyance from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, but you can reasonably expect an organization with a large staff and access to intelligence sources to be prepared for a predictable conflict. In addition to the signs I mentioned, we also know that the West has been applying covert means to conduct a permanent struggle for the control over the Eurasian continent ever since the end of the cold war. In the past few decades, American foreign policy has been greatly influenced by the Neoconservatives, whose zeal to implement a monopolar world order puts any religious fanatic to shame. This new order means the violent expansion and monopoly of the liberal political, economic and cultural value system of the United States. As we know, the "Neocon Jihad" is not only fought with weapons. Where it is possible, they of course use American heavy weaponry to "build democracy" like in the case of Iraq and Afghanistan. In many other places however, where the Neocons are facing a tough opponent, they prefer to wage war indirectly. The set of tools in this campaign ranges along a wide spectrum, applying sophisticated methods. Why wage a costly, bloody and unpopular war when you can wave the banners of liberty and democracy and place any nation under the yoke of a loyal political elite that is educated on Soros grants and the money of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation, and are sworn to serve the Atlantic interests? Of course, first you need to get rid of the unwanted political system through some targeted intelligence operations, the propaganda machine of Western media, or breaking the backbone of the country's economy by a well-timed report of a credit rating agency or even the IMF or the World Bank, the guardians of the Neoliberal economic world order. Since the US does not dare to enter into a direct confrontation with its major rivals, Russia and China, it applies these covert methods to destabilize a region and weaken its rival's influence there. This is what happened in Georgia, Kyrgyzstan, and now in Ukraine as well.

Five billion dollars for the Ukrainian crisis

– When covering the Ukrainian crisis, the media always presents Russia as an aggressor who violates Ukraine's sovereignty by supporting the separatists in Eastern Ukraine. It is often mentioned that Russia breaches the memorandum signed in Budapest in 1994, which stated that the territorial integrity of Hungary's Eastern neighbour must be respected. What is the truth?

– There is no absolute truth in geopolitical conflicts, but the unilateral, anti-Russian propaganda of the Western media needs to be viewed with a critical approach. While the West keeps repeating that that the Western media is the only one to report international processes objectively, claiming that its "independence" is the token of balanced coverage, we need to remember the bloodthirsty propaganda that has been conducted by CNN and the "media role model" BBC ever since 9/11, in connection with the completely illegitimate operations in Afghanistan and Iraq. They continue the same practice nowadays as well, covering the Palestinian genocide by the terrorist state of Israel, the smear campaigns against the Syrian Assad Government or Iran, the silence about the total failure of the Afghan intervention, the crimes against humanity committed by the occupying Western forces or the machinations causing the Western Ukrainian crisis. I must state as a fact that every Russian step is only a response to Western provocations. It is a fact that the financial, media and intelligence support of the West helped the Ukrainian "opposition" to execute a coup d'état against President Yanukovich, whose biggest crime in the eyes of the West was that, in November 2013, he refused to sign the EU Association Agreement designed to colonize his homeland. It is a fact that the US "invested" 5 billion dollars into creating a crisis in Ukraine - we know this from a tapped phone call of Assistant Secretary of State Victoria Nuland. It is a fact that the US bolstered the extremely anti-Russian and anti-Hungarian Ukrainian chauvinists; Svoboda and Praviy Sector. It is a fact that the CIA supports the Ukrainian government in the ongoing military operations, and thousands of mercenaries organized by the American Blackwater/Academi company are fighting under Ukrainian banners. It is a fact that the illegitimate Ukrainian government, which the West helped into power by way of a coup d'état, is firing at civilians in Eastern Ukraine. Considering all this, is Russia really the bogeyman just because it stands for the Russian speaking minority in Eastern Ukraine? Those who want to hold Russia accountable for breaching the Budapest Memorandum should also remember that, upon the German reunification, Russia was promised that NATO (which Russia rightfully considers as a threat) would not expand towards the East. However, all Central Eastern Europe and the Baltic states belong to NATO now, and packed with missiles pointing at Moscow. NATO's present irresponsible sabre-rattling, i.e. the military exercises in the Baltic region, Ukraine and the Black Sea further intensifies the situation, which is completely unnecessary - especially since Putin, Poroshenko and EU Commissioner Lady Ashton met in Minsk.

The blackmailed elite

– More and more media reports deal with the potential risk of a new world war arising from the Ukrainian conflict, and it might not be completely unfounded. Is this a realistic threat or irresponsible panic mongering?

– That is hard to predict, but there is a realistic chance of a serious conflict, unfortunately. In my view, the biggest problem is that the foreign and security policy of the world's only current superpower is controlled by a Neoconservative power elite, whose narrow-minded approach is coupled with a fanatic missionary zeal. The fact that the US lacks history, an independent culture and the fundaments of civilization is not a problem in itself, but their efforts to impose their exclusively materialistic, anti-transcendentalist, liberal approach upon ancient, millennia-old civilizations are indeed the source of several conflicts. In the past few decades, the power of the USA and the West was not consolidated, in fact it was in a relative decline, which means that the world became multi-polar. If the US and especially its power elite fail to realize it soon enough, and continue trying to use their minimal competitive edge to Americanize the whole world, then we are about to face a conflict unheard of before. In other words, it's not Putin who can prevent a worldwide conflict but the fanatic American elite who seem to have lost their sense of reality.

- What can a small country like Hungary do in this situation?

– Hungarian foreign policy at the time of the collapse of Communism was an utter failure. This wrong strategy, i.e. unconditional Euro-Atlantism was not reviewed even when Hungary began to actually experience the negative impacts. Let me not go into what consequences a provoked military clash with Russia would have on Hungary and the whole Central European region. Buffer zone countries, including Hungary, would obviously suffer the most damage in this conflict, unlike the US, which is on the other side of the world. On the other hand, a lengthy economic war would cause a lot of damage for us, the whole of Europe and Russia alike, since we are interdependent. So the only party to benefit from the further intensification of the Russia-Ukraine crisis is the USA, since they could weaken Europe and Russia at the same time.

– If Europe is not interested in intensifying the conflict, why do they still do it? Is the European elite an enemy of itself?

– I do not know why the European political elite, including Hungary, is so dumb and self-destructive. If Washington had any reason whatsoever to tap its own allies, i.e. all European politicians (as the WikiLeaks documents prove it), then it must be to use the collected data against them somehow. I firmly believe that the USA blackmails the European political elite. We can only hope that the future of the continent is more important for European leaders than their own political careers.

Jobbik: International organizations should investigate ukrainian war crimes and atrocities against unarmed civilians

Jobbik Movement for a Better Hungary is gravely concerned to receive news about the civilian victims of the clashes in the Donieck and Luhansk area, with special regard to the fact that several recent conflicts (the Southern Slavic wars, or the current fights in Syria and Iraq), caused the most damage and suffering for the civilian population. Considering the alarming news received from Eastern Ukraine, Jobbik submitted a draft resolution to the Hungarian Parliament on July 4 to condemn the genocide conducted by the Kiev government. Unfortunately, our proposal was not supported by the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Hungarian Parliament, even though our concern was not unfounded, as it is proven by the mass grave found in the territories given up by the Ukrainian army.

We are quite aware that modern wars are fought by controlling the flow of information but we are shocked to see that the issue of the alleged mass graves was hardly reported in the Western media, which is otherwise so sensitive to the freedom of the press. Currently, the only source available is the Russian news supply. Considering that this one-sided approach, which is arbitrarily maintained by the Western media, makes it very difficult to obtain objective information about the plight of the civilian population in Eastern Ukraine, Jobbik calls upon the UN, the OSCE, the International Red Cross and all major international organizations to conduct independent investigations and find out what (potentially grave) crimes against humanity have been committed in the Donieck and Luhansk area. Jobbik believes it is highly important for these organizations to examine the mass grave presented in the Russian news coverage, so that they could provide unbiased information for the world.

Meanwhile, Jobbik calls upon the Hungarian government to stop supporting the aggressive and irresponsible Euro-Atlantic war policy and abandon its delusional standpoint about the territorial integrity of Ukraine, since it is the Ukrainian government itself that has been detrimental to the unity of its own country. Any government using its armed forces to attack its own citizens loses its legitimacy, thus condemning the country to an inevitable disintegration. We call upon the Hungarian government to respect the values of our democracy and to withdraw its support from a government that applies weapons and terror against its own people.

Jobbik turns to the leaders of international organizations in the issue of mass graves in Donetsk

Tue, 10/14/2014 - 19:24

Ever since the Ukrainian conflict broke out, Jobbik Movement for a Better Hungary has been following the news of combat events. Just like all other wars, this one is unfortunately causing immeasurable pain and suffering for the civilian population living in the region, too. In spite of a rather unilateral coverage of Western media, we have been suspecting that a humanitarian disaster may have taken place in the area of Donetsk and Luhansk Oblasts due to the unjustified aggression of the Ukrainian army and the indifference of Western powers.

Jobbik has always been speaking out for the people living in Eastern Ukraine, but the news of the recently uncovered mass graves surpasses all imagination and raises the suspicion of crimes against humanity similar to the ones committed in the Balkan wars of the 1990s. Since the graves are in the territories given up by the Ukrainian forces, Western media yet again chose to be silent about the case, thus approving of the horrible crimes allegedly committed by the forces under Kiev command.

Being aware of its moral obligation and responsibility for peace, Jobbik has decided to turn to the international community. On October 7 Party President Gábor Vona sent an open letter to the Human Rights Commissioners of the UN and the Council of Europe as well as the Secretary General of OSCE and the President of the International Committee of the Red Cross, requesting them to investigate the case of the mass graves found in the Donetsk area.

As Gábor Vona writes in his letter, Jobbik has never accepted double standards and always stood out for innocent victims. The party president believes that the most important precondition for peace is to serve justice. Considering the conspiratorial silence of Western powers, justice cannot be served unless unbiased international organizations are involved.

In his letter, Gábor Vona expresses his hope that the UN, the Council of Europe, the OSCE and the Red Cross can guarantee the revelation of the truth in spite of all the manipulated coverage, and we will finally be able to see clearly in the issue of the mass graves and the other alleged crimes that are reported in the Russian media but hushed up in the Western world.
