No country has ‘veto’ on Ukraine’s NATO aspirations, Pentagon chief says as Moscow warns Kiev joining bloc goes ‘beyond red lines’

19 Oct, 2021 21:38 / Updated 7 minutes ago

No third country can veto Ukraine's wish to join NATO, the Pentagon chief has said. His statement comes after Moscow warned Kiev that joining the bloc would go beyond "red lines" and may prompt Russia to "take active measures."

Ukraine is free to decide its future and foreign policy, with no foreign entity having a say in its aspiration to join the NATO alliance, US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said Tuesday.

"Ukraine… has a right to decide its own future foreign policy and we expect that they will be able to do that without any outside interference," Austin said at a joint press conference with his Ukrainian counterpart Andrey Taran in Kiev.

"No third country has a veto over NATO's membership decisions."

The statement apparently came in response to a harsh warning against Ukraine ever joining NATO, voiced by Moscow a day earlier. Speaking to French journalists for a program called 'Vladimir Putin: Master of the Game,' the Kremlin's spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that Kiev's accession to NATO would be "the worst-case scenario."

jewsign NATO Sliding Towards War Against Russia in Ukraine

As far as Ukraine goes, Ankara seems to be setting the pace for NATO’s deepening involvement in the country’s war.

Russia is investigating reports of Turkish attack drones being deployed for the first time in Ukraine’s eight-year civil war. The Ukrainian Armed Forces (UAF) under the command of the Kiev regime*claimed*that the drones were used earlier this week in combat against ethnic Russian rebels.

This is a potentially dramatic escalation in the smoldering war. For it marks the direct involvement of NATO member Turkey in the conflict. Up to now, the United States and other NATO states have been supplying lethal weaponry to the Kiev regime to prosecute its war against the breakaway self-declared republics of Donetsk and Luhansk.

American, British and Canadian military advisors are also known to have carried out training missions with UAF combat units. Britain is in*negotiations*to sell Brimstone missiles to the Ukrainian navy.

But the apparent deployment of Turkish attack drones is a potential game-changer. Russia’s foreign minister Sergei Lavrov hinted at the graveness when he announced Wednesday that Moscow was carrying out urgent investigations about the purported participation of Turk-made Bayraktar TB2 Unmanned Aerial Vehicles.

Previously, Lavrov rebuked Turkey to stay out of the conflict and to not feed Ukrainian hostilities.

Last week, Russian President Vladimir Putin*warned*that NATO’s support to the Kiev regime was posing a direct threat to Russia’s national security. The Kremlin’s assessment can only be more alarmed on the back of NATO member Turkey being now implicated as one of the war’s protagonists. In all likelihood, Turkish military personnel would be required to assist in operating the drone flights.

The war in the Eastern Ukraine region known as Donbass has persisted for nearly eight years. It was triggered after a NATO-backed coup d’état in Kiev in February 2014 against an elected government that had been aligned with Russia. The new regime was characterized by anti-Russian politics and Neo-Nazi ideology. The ethnic Russian population of Donbass rejected the Western-backed regime, leading to a war. The ethnic Russian people of Crimea likewise voted in a referendum in March 2014 to secede from Ukraine and to join the Russian Federation with which it has centuries of shared history. Kiev’s forces are accused of aggression and potential war crimes from shelling civilian homes and infrastructure. This week an oil depot in Donetsk was*bombed*by a drone. It is not clear if the drone was one of the Turkish weapons.

jewsign Eastern ukraine: Smoldering conflict almost turns into full-fledged european war

On October 26, the Armed Forces of Ukraine (UAF) attacked an artillery crew of the Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR) militia using the Turkish-made*UAV Bayraktar TB2. As a result one soldier was killed and a new stage of active hostilities in the east of Ukraine was outlined.

According to the Ukrainian officials, the order to use the UAV was given by the UAF commander, Lieutenant General Valerii Zaluzhnyi, in response to barrage from the DPR militia. Apparently, the deployment of UAVs by the Ukrainian side will become a regular practice from now on, especially, because the DPR and LPR forces have no means to counter them.

The attack was carried out with the high-precision MAM-L short-range munition at its effective range of 13 km. Alarmingly, a newer MAM-T model of munition may be also used against the DPR militia in the coming future, enabling the UAF to attack the territories without crossing the front line.

Russia ending gas transit through Ukraine escalates risk of WAR, Kiev’s state gas firm claims as Nord Stream 2 tests continue

1 Nov, 2021 17:41

Cutting Ukraine off from billions of dollars in Russian gas transit fees by striking new deals to export supplies through pipelines that bypass the country could lead to outright conflict, Kiev’s state gas firm has claimed.

On Monday, in an interview with the UK’s Financial Times, the head of Naftogaz, Yuriy Vitrenko, said the new Nord Stream 2 pipeline increased the chance of war between Ukraine and Russia. According to him, circumventing Kiev could leave the nation more vulnerable to a Moscow-ordered “invasion.”

The energy boss claimed that if “there is no physical transit [of gas] through Ukraine, this increases the chances of a full-scale war between Russia and Ukraine with all its consequences.”

Construction of the Nord Stream 2 pipeline, which connects the gas fields of Siberia to consumers in Western Europe, was completed in September. Running from Russia to Germany under the Baltic Sea, it can transport up to 55 billion cubic meters of gas per year. It is now undergoing final tests and awaiting approval from regulators in Berlin to begin operating.

Russia-NATO war over Ukraine is becoming increasingly unavoidable

20 Nov, 2021 17:47

By Glenn Diesen, Professor at the University of South-Eastern Norway and an editor at the Russia in Global Affairs journal.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has warned that the West isn’t taking his country’s “red lines” seriously and the US and its allies could be about to sleepwalk into a dangerous conflict with the world’s largest nuclear power.

Red lines are about deterrence. The purpose of drawing them in the first place is to communicate crucial security interests and the severe consequences that would ensue if they were undermined. In essence, Moscow’s ultimatums are intended to stop the West from making a dangerous miscalculation.

Deterrence rests on the three Cs: capability, credibility, and communication. Russia has the military capability to act if its red lines are crossed, it’s demonstrated credibility in terms of its preparedness to act on threats, and it knows the specifics must be communicated clearly to avoid the West making any mis-steps that would necessitate a forceful response. However, the weakness in its red lines is the current lack of detail as to what would happen if another nation took a step too far.

Ukraine could use US rockets to provoke war in Donbass – Moscow

22 Nov, 2021 14:35

The alleged use of American anti-tank missiles by Ukrainian forces fighting separatists in the east of the country is increasing the prospect of a full-blown conflict in the war-torn region, Moscow’s top diplomat has warned.

Speaking to reporters on Monday, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said that claims Kiev’s troops had deployed American-made Javelin rocket launchers were a concerning development. “In recent weeks, we have seen a stream of consciousness from the Ukrainian leadership – especially when it comes to the military – that is excessively inflamed and dangerous.” According to him, the belligerent rhetoric could lead to provocations on the ground.

His comments come just hours after an interview with the head of Ukraine’s military intelligence service, Kirill Budanov, was published by the US-based Military Times. In it, the defense chief revealed that Javelin had been tested by Kiev’s troop’s and was being used by soldiers in the Donbass. While the US provides ‘non-lethal’ aid to the country and sells ammunition to it, analysts have speculated that the weapons system could have been donated or provided at a discount given its high cost.

Is Russia going to invade Ukraine?

24 Nov, 2021 11:57 / Updated 8 hours ago

By Paul Robinson, a professor at the University of Ottawa. He writes about Russian and Soviet history, military history and military ethics, and is author of the Irrussianality blog.

While commentators spilled ink over the prospect of war between Russia & Ukraine, President Vladimir Putin last week took a major step towards absorbing the war-torn breakaway Donbass regions. And yet, bizarrely, nobody noticed.

Scares about imminent Russian invasions of Ukraine – and the apocalyptic conflict between East and West they would trigger – come and go on a regular basis. Sometimes it’s the Ukrainians who cry wolf, sometimes it’s somebody else. The last major war panic was back in the spring of this year and, as usual, it passed peacefully. The Russian incursion never happened. This, however, has not stopped a new war frenzy from erupting this month.

This time around it’s the Americans inciting the hysteria, with anonymous US officials briefing Bloomberg that “Russia may be weighing a potential invasion of Ukraine as tensions flare between Moscow and the bloc over migrants and energy supplies,” pointing to an alleged “build-up of Russian forces near the Ukrainian border.” Other unnamed sources claim that the United States is contemplating sending “military advisers and new equipment, including weaponry,” to Ukraine in order to help the country defend itself.

After initially stating that it saw no evidence of the supposed Russian ‘build-up’, Ukraine has since changed tack and backed up the Americans’ alarmist claims. The head of the country’s military intelligence, Brigadier General Kirill Budanov, told the Military Times that Russia was preparing to attack in late January/early February, and that the assault “would likely involve airstrikes, artillery and armor attacks followed by airborne assaults in the east, amphibious assaults in Odessa and Mariupol and a smaller incursion through neighboring Belarus.”

Ukraine says it’s ready to defend itself against Russia

26 Nov, 2021 15:22

By Layla Guest

The Ukrainian armed forces are preparing to use all available resources to hold the front line against any Russian invasion, the country’s foreign minister has insisted, as the war of words between East and West ramps up.

Speaking during a closed online discussion with French foreign policy think tanks and reporters, Dmitry Kuleba said that Kiev, with Paris and Berlin, continues to stress the importance of negotiating a political and diplomatic solution to avoid a potential conflict with Russia.

The top official claimed that his country and its partners are now focusing all of their efforts on deterring Moscow from hostile actions. “At the same time… no one should have any doubts that in the case of a new stage of full-scale aggression from the Russian Federation against our state, Ukraine will be protected by all available means,” he insisted.

Kuleba’s comments come amid rumors of a buildup of Russian troops and military hardware near Ukraine’s border. Several publications have published stories in recent days about a possible armed conflict breaking out between the two Eastern European states after Kiev’s domestic intelligence agency published a theoretical plan of how Russian troops could invade.

‘Russian troops dismember the armed forces of Ukraine’: how a war between Moscow & Kiev could play out, and why it won’t happen

27 Nov, 2021 11:12 / Updated 1 day ago

The costs of a war between Russia and Ukraine far outweigh the benefits. It brings significant risks to the economy, political stability and Russian foreign policy, fails to solve key security problems, but creates many new ones.
That’s according to Valdai Club Programme Director Ivan Timofeev. The top Moscow think tank is closely connected with President Vladimir Putin. Timofeev, one of Russia’s leading foreign experts, is skeptical about the possibility of a conflict, but he has outlined how such an operation could be conducted.

One scenario could look like this:

With a sudden and decisive blow in several directions at once, Russian troops dismember the armed forces of Ukraine in the east of the country, surround separate groups, or press them against the Dnieper river. The actions of tank and motorised units are accompanied by powerful air, missile and artillery strikes. The Russian Aerospace Forces seize air supremacy.

The apotheosis of the operation should be the encirclement and the subsequent capture of Kiev, and the stabilisation of the front line along the Dnieper. The creation of a new Ukrainian state with its capital in Kiev would be announced and recognised by Russia. It would include the previously independent DPR and LPR.

Russia thereby resolves several historical problems at once. The immediate threat to the southwestern borders is removed. Full control over the Sea of Azov and a land corridor to the Republic of Crimea are ensured. Two Ukrainian states appear on the map, one of which should be ‘friendly and fraternal.’

NATO shipping weaponry to Russian border – Moscow

30 Nov, 2021 15:45

By Layla Guest

Alarming quantities of weapons are being shuttled by NATO towards the border with Russia, Moscow's top diplomat has warned, adding that Western states are engaging in provocations that could lead to an actual armed conflict.

Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov revealed that “significant units and armaments from NATO countries, including American and British, are being moved closer to our borders.”

He said that, in neighboring Ukraine, “more and more forces and equipment are being accumulated on the line of contact in the Donbas, supported by an increasing number of Western instructors.”

According to the veteran diplomat, these nations also encourage officials in Kiev to take anti-Russian actions, which he said can easily “turn into military adventures.”

Lavrov warned that “if the West cannot hold back Ukraine – and actually encourages it – of course we will take all necessary steps to ensure our security.”

Protesters demand Ukrainian president quit on day of ‘planned coup’

2 Dec, 2021 14:52

A large crowd has taken to the streets of Kiev demanding the resignation of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, on the same day that he claimed a Russian-backed coup d'etat would be launched against his government.

The demonstrations, which kicked off on Wednesday, are understood to have included members of Ukrainian nationalist parties, supporters of former President Petro Poroshenko, and activists representing small business owners and entrepreneurs. A total of around 1,000 people are said to have gathered in the Ukrainian capital, calling for Zelensky’s impeachment and the dissolution of the Rada, the national parliament.

One protest leader told local media, “the regime’s actions amount to a governmental coup. The constitution is being flouted and the nation’s interests are being given away.” Protesters set up a sign declaring “Save Ukraine – Stop the coup” in the iconic Maidan square, the site of the uprising that ousted the country’s elected government and began a turn toward the West in 2014.

‘Soviet Union’ could invade Ukraine, Pentagon chief claims

2 Dec, 2021 14:40 / Updated 1 day ago

By Layla Guest

Despite the Soviet Union having collapsed around three decades ago, the hammer and sickle could soon be flying back over Ukraine, America's top military official appears to have suggested amid claims about a Russian attack.

Speaking on Thursday during a visit to South Korea, US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin demanded Moscow pull back its military from its Ukrainian frontier or face the hardest round of sanctions ever imposed.

When asked about which form the embargoes will take, he said that the “best methods” will be used, and that “whatever we do will be done as a part of an international community.”

“The best case though is that we won't see an incursion by the Soviet Union into the Ukraine," the high-ranking official said, mistakenly referring to Russia as the former USSR – the collective of 15 republics that ceased to exist in 1991.

Ukraine warns EU about 5 million refugees

5 Dec, 2021 14:53 / Updated 1 day ago

Ukraine’s defense minister has decided to raise the specter of one of the European Union’s major concerns – large scale migration – amid American-driven claims that Russia is planning an invasion of his country.

Alexey Reznikov, who took charge of Kiev's Defense Ministry in November, warns that up to five million of his country men and women could flee to the EU in the event of a full-scale war. A similar number are believed to have already left since 2014, about two million to Russia, and the rest to other European countries.

Writing for pro-NATO lobby group the Atlantic Council, Reznikov said there was “real uncertainty” about whether Brussels understood the impact a much-hyped large-scale Russian incursion into Ukraine would have on the whole of the continent.

Reznikov dedicated his article to explaining to EU leaders the potentially “disastrous consequences” of any conflict – one Russia has repeatedly said it has no intention of starting.

US makes war promise to NATO members on ‘eastern flank’

6 Dec, 2021 19:41 / Updated 2 hours ago

The US would not send troops into a conflict between Russia and Ukraine, Washington has said ahead of Thursday's summit between US President Joe Biden and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin.

However, Washington has pledged that it's prepared to “bolster” members of its NATO military bloc.

“We do not know whether Putin has made a decision about further military escalation in Ukraine, but we do know he's putting in place the capacity to engage in such escalation should he decide to do so,” a senior Biden administration official told reporters in a background briefing on Monday, according to Reuters.

The US is not seeking a scenario in which its military would be used in a conflict between Moscow and Kiev, but would be “prepared to bolster allies on NATO’s eastern flank,” the official is quoted as saying. The idea of Russian troops preparing for an “invasion” of Ukraine, replicated in mainstream media over the past few days, has been rubbished by the Kremlin.

Ukraine ‘invasion’, Belarus & strategic stability: What to expect from Putin-Biden summit

6 Dec, 2021 14:25 / Updated 10 hours ago

The presidents of the US and Russia are set to have another one-on-one "summit," which is expected to focus on Ukraine and the West’s claims that Moscow is planning to invade its neighbor.

Vladimir Putin and Joe Biden will have a bilateral meeting on Tuesday via a video link. The American leader plans to “underscore US concerns with Russian military activities on the border with Ukraine and reaffirm the United States’ support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine,” White House spokesperson Jen Psaki has indicated.

The supposed threat of Russian aggression against Ukraine has been trumpeted in the West since mid-November. Over the weeks, vague claims of a Russian military buildup morphed into full-blown explanations of how the invasion would unfold, complete with maps showing directions of offensive operations, based on US intelligence reportedly shared with NATO members.

US comments on Russia’s ‘Ukraine invasion’

7 Dec, 2021 20:38

The US doesn’t believe Russian President Vladimir Putin has made a decision to “invade” Ukraine, National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan said, in wake of Putin’s video-link talks with US President Joe Biden.

“We still do not believe that President Putin has made a decision” to “further invade” Ukraine, Sullivan told reporters at the White House on Tuesday afternoon.

“What President Biden did today was lay out very clearly the consequences if he chooses to move.”

The Biden administration has previously accused Moscow of planning an invasion of Ukraine in January, which the Kremlin has rejected as “fake news.”

Ukrainian navy ship came close to Russian waters off Crimea & refused to change course – Moscow

9 Dec, 2021 19:46 / Updated 26 minutes ago

A Ukrainian navy vessel, named the Donbass, set course to pass through Russian territorial waters off the coast of Crimea, on Thursday, and ignored warnings to turn around, border officials have reported.

The incident cames at a time of heightened tensions between Russia and Ukraine that have caused alarm internationally. On Tuesday, Russian President Vladimir Putin held a "virtual summit" with his US counterpart, Joe Biden. The American leader was due to speak with Ukraine's Volodomyr Zelensky around the same time, amid efforts to find a resolution to a seven-year-old standoff between Moscow, Kiev and the West.

In a statement issued late on Thursday night, Russia’s FSB announced that “on December 9 at 9.12am, the command ship ‘Donbass’ of the Ukrainian Navy left the port of Mariupol and began heading for the Kerch Strait.”

UN General Assembly votes on ‘militarization of Crimea’

10 Dec, 2021 19:27 / Updated 3 hours ago

By Layla Guest

The United Nations General Assembly has condemned the presence of Moscow’s troops and military hardware on the disputed Crimean peninsula, with one of Russia’s top envoys blasting the Kiev-backed initiative as politicized.

On Thursday, 62 countries voted in favor of the motion, which accuses Moscow of building up its forces in the region and violating the rights of its citizens.

However, the majority of states did not vote in favor, with 55 abstaining from casting their ballots. A further 22 nations, including Russia, and the former Soviet republics Armenia and Belarus, as well as China, Cuba, Iran, and Venezuela, rejected the proposal.

Commenting after the verdict, Russia’s first deputy permanent representative to the UN, Dmitry Polyanskiy, claimed that “for the fourth year in a row, Ukraine, supported by a well-known group of states, has forced the General Assembly to consider a highly politicized draft document.”

US delivers rockets to Ukraine

11 Dec, 2021 13:54 / Updated 9 hours ago

By Layla Guest

The Pentagon has disclosed details of the shipment of anti-tank missile systems and projectiles supplied to Kiev, as Moscow grows increasingly concerned about the prospect of a full-blown conflict in Ukraine’s Donbass region.

In a statement received by Russian news outlet TASS on Thursday, Pentagon spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Anton Semelroth said that “the $60 million package… included 30 Javelin command and control launchers, as well as 180 missiles.” According to him, the rocket launchers were delivered to Ukraine on October 23.

“In 2021, the US allocated more than $450 million in aid to Ukraine for security tasks as part of our continued commitment to support the country’s ability to defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity,” the spokesman added.
