Croatia's population could fall below 4 million by 2030
MARCH 15 2013 18:31h
Croatia's population could fall below 4 million by 2030 As a result of the low birth rate and extended life expectancy Croatia is one of the 'oldest' countries in the world and if this trend continues and Croatia doesn't experience a wave of immigration, its population could fall under 4 million by 2030, according to a survey entitled "Economics of Ageing in Croatia", which was presented at the Economics Faculty in Zagreb on Friday. Projections indicate that by then a million Croatians will be older than 65 and more than 250,000 will be older than 80. The average age of Croatians is 42 and one interesting feature is that there is 100,000 more people over 65 than children up to the age of 14, it was said at the presentation. Another interesting point is that about 5% of the population aged over 50 have never been married, around 70% are married while every fifth person is widowed. The portion of older-age workers on the labour market in Croatia is amongst the lowest in Europe. Croatia is particularly exposed to the risk of poverty and one third of women and one-fifth of men older than 65 face the risk of poverty. (Hina) http://dalje.com/en-croatia/croatias...by-2030/459695
