7,000 migrants are expected to enter Austria from Hungary today

Hungary has reopened its main border crossing with Serbia five days after sealing it off to stop migrants entering its territory.

Hungarian interior minister Sandor Pinter said the crossing on the M5 highway between Roszke and Horgos, Serbia, had been reopened for vehicles, which will be checked.

The crossing was the site of clashes between baton-wielding Hungarian riot police and migrants on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, 7,000 migrants are expected to cross into Austria from Hungary at the main Nickelsdorf crossing, east of Vienna, today.

Far-right Hungarian mayor warns migrants away

Quote:
BUDAPEST, Hungary (AP) — The latest developments as European governments rush to cope with the huge number of people moving across Europe. All times local (CET):

For one far-right village mayor, Hungary's tough new anti-migrant measures are not enough.

Laszlo Toroczkai, the mayor of Asotthalom, has put out a short video warning asylum-seekers to stay out of his village of 4,000. Made in the style of an action film, it shows security guards patrolling by car,

horseback, motorcycle and even helicopter.

It closes with Toroczkai telling migrants if "you want to get to Germany, then the shortest journey from Serbia is through Croatia and Slovenia. Do not trust the lying human traffickers. Hungary is a bad

choice. Asthottalom is the worst."

Asthottalom is near the border with Serbia, an area where more than 200,000 migrants have passed through this year en route to Western Europe.

The film has gotten a lot of attention in Hungary, with some mocking the video, others expressing support for his anti-immigrant stance.

Clashes provoke ’30-day suspension’ of Hungary-Serbia border crossing

Quote:
Violent clashes on the Serbia-Hungary frontier have provoked Budapest to order a 30-day suspension of the Roszke-Horgos border crossing, Serbia’s foreign ministry reports.

Our correspondent on the scene says protesters were throwing sticks. The Hungarian authorities responded with water cannon and tear gas.

At least 20 policeman and two children are reported to have been injured as a result of the clashes.

The Rozke-Horgos crossing is one of the main entry points into Hungary, the European Union and the border-free Schengen Zone.

Budapest sealed the frontier to migrants on Tuesday and reports suggest the process could be repeated on the border with Romania.

Today (September 16), Bucharest is believed to have summoned the Hungarian ambassador to discuss extending the border fence.

Janos Lazar

Prime Minister Viktor Orban's chief of staff on Thursday rejected criticism of the Hungarian government by the U.S. ambassador to Budapest, saying her remarks amounted to interference in Hungary's affairs.

"For me as a voter it is downright irritating that a diplomat should come here and tell us how to live or how our voters should live," said Janos Lazar, one of Orban's top lieutenants.

Since assuming power in 2010, Orban's government has come under fire from the European Union and the United States for curbing media freedoms, its reforms of the court system, centralization of power and a crackdown on NGOs.

Quote:
U.S. ambassador Colleen Bell (distinguished soap opera specialist) said on Wednesday that corruption in Hungary was still a serious concern, using the secrecy surrounding Hungary's deal with Russia over its nuclear plant in Paks as an example.

"Increasing centralization of power creates conditions that mean that many of the big decisions that will impact Hungary for generations to come remain opaque," Bell said.

"We urge an immediate end to heavy-handed tactics against civil society organizations."

The ambassador also criticized Hungary's attitude towards refugees amidst the migration crisis in Europe.

"We can relegate nationalist, intolerant rhetoric to the dust heap where it belongs," Bell said.
Lazar was asked at a routine news conference about Bell's remarks.

"As a country we are not subjugated to the United States of America, and we do not want to be either," he said. "Diplomats delegated here ought to get used to this after five years (of the Fidesz party in power)."

"It is not us that need a reality check, but the Embassy of the United States of America, in view of how they interfere in Hungary's domestic politics, what hasty and simplistic judgments they pass on a society," Lazar added.

Hungary Vows it Won't Take a 'Single Syrian Refugee,' Slovenia Erects Razor-Wire Fence

Quote:
At least some European countries are showing evidence of a spine.

Only one country has consistently displayed fortitude in the midst of Europe's refugee crisis.

Doubling down on its implementation of a razor-wire fence successful in stemming the influx of migrants, Hungary has now declared that it will not take in a "single Syrian"

refugee should Germany seek to send any back to their first point of European-entry (often times, Hungary).

Germany shouldn’t send back refugees to the their first point-of-entry in the European Union based on the bloc’s Dublin accord, Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto said,

according to an interview with MTI news service.

“The Dublin system is dead since apart from a few exceptions, countries aren’t abiding by its terms,” Szijjarto said on Wednesday, according to MTI. “Not a single Syrian”

should be returned from western Europe to Hungary, he said.

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has been fiercely critical of Germany and France's obsession with multiculturalism and has consistently shown clarity in protecting his

country from being overrun by migrants.

Orban recently slammed weaker European countries for their capitulation, saying Islam has "never been a part of Europe." His comment conveyed how certain belief sets are

anathema to European civility.

Perhaps emulating his model, Slovenia, a tiny country bearing the overflow of refugees turned away by Hungary, has now begun construction on its own razor-wire fence along its Croatian border.

Around 180,000 people, many fleeing war in Syria and Afghanistan, have entered Slovenia since mid October, most of them heading north to Austria and then Germany.

Army trucks carrying wire fencing arrived in the border village of Veliki Obrez in southeastern Slovenia early on Wednesday. By 0630 ET, about 2 km (1.2 miles) of wire had

been erected, a Reuters photographer there said.

Slovenia is facing more immediate and pressing logistical concerns. Prime Minister Miro Cerar said on Tuesday that the country, the smallest on the migrant route, does not

have the resources to shelter large numbers over the harsh winter if Austria shut its border.

Cerar maintains that Slovenia is not barring immigrants outright, but is rather ensuring that migrants only funnel through authorized border crossings.

We could take the Slovenian PM at his word, or entertain the possibility that he is clever enough to have found a way of shuttering his border "diplomatically."

Whichever the case, at least he is wise enough to emulate the one country in Europe that just might survive the invasion.

EU Is Coming Down on Hungary Over Nuclear Plant Deal With Russia

Hungary previously lost big time when EU sabotaged South Stream gas pipeline

(bne IntelliNews)

The European Commission is reportedly threatening to suspend Hungary's Russian-backed €12.5bn project to expand the Paks nuclear plant because Budapest has infringed public procurement rules.

While officials in Budapest confirmed Brussels is unhappy with the deal, they insisted on November 18 that it has followed all rules and that they have not yet received any official notice from the EU.

Budapest tore up an international tender in January 2014 to hand Russia a contract to expand the Paks plant. In return, Moscow agreed to lend Hungary €10bn in funding.

The EU has remained remarkably quiet since, which has had Hungary on tenterhooks. Brussels, clearly concerned over deepening European dependence on Russia, now appears ready to challenge the deal.

Late on November 17, BruxInfo reported that the European Commission considers Hungary to have broken public procurement rules on the project.

The EU executive will send a letter of formal notice to Budapest on November 19, calling on the cabinet to suspend all ongoing procurement and refrain from inviting new supply tenders related to the expansion of the country's only nuclear power plant.

The move has been confirmed by EU commissioner Elzbieta Bienkowska, Portfolio.hu reports. Janos Lazar, Hungarian Prime Minister Victor Orban’s chief of staff, told Nepszabadsag the report is accurate, but stressed that no official notification about the decision has been received yet.

The Prime Minister's Office reiterated that point in a statement, and rejected suggestions it has broken any rules.

“Hungary’s position is that both the Hungarian-Russian intergovernmental agreement signed in January 2014, and the engineering, procurement and construction contract signed in December 2015 [sic] comply with the EU regulation on public procurement procedures,” it reads.

Big guns

The EU move appears to target those latter agreements. Budapest and Moscow signed contracts on the design, construction and maintenance of the two new 1,200 megawatt reactors late last year. Many details have not been publicised due to “national security” concerns.

Hungary has drawn sharp criticism in Brussels over concerns that the project will deepen the bloc's dependence on Russian energy.

However, the only public stance on its legality taken thus far by the European Commission came in April, when it informed Hungary that nuclear fuel agency Euratom has approved a contract under which Russia will supply fuel for the plant.

However, it now looks to be upping the ante as it steps closer to the core deals. While a ruling on state aid grounds is seen as the ultimate weapon against the deal with the Russians, the public procurement notice could prove a big gun.

It was just such a challenge to Bulgaria that signalled the start of the end for Russia's grand plan to build the giant South Stream gas pipeline into the EU.

Budapest expressed worry as it was signing the contracts with Russia in December that the Paks project could go the same way as South Stream should the EU look to block it.

Quoting unnamed sources, the BBC reported in June that the European Commission would decide in October whether or not illegal state aid is involved in the project.

That deadline has now passed, suggesting Brussels may be keeping that powder keg dry for the meantime.

Man in Hungary gets 3 years’ probation for Holocaust denial

BUDAPEST, Hungary — A Budapest court on Thursday sentenced a Hungarian man to three years’ probation for publicly denying that the Holocaust happened.

The case stems from a June 2012 speech in which Ferenc Oroshazi read excerpts from “Fatelessness,” a semi-autobiographical novel by Hungarian Holocaust survivor and Nobel Prize-winning author Imre Kertesz, and said they proved that the Holocaust didn’t happen.

“Fatelessness” narrates the experiences of a 14-year-old boy, Gyuri Koves, in the Auschwitz and Buchenwald death camps. Kertesz drew upon events from his own life for the book.

In one excerpt, Koves is asked about the gas chambers upon returning from the death camps and says that he did not see any although he heard about them. Oroshazi claimed that showed that the Holocaust did not take place.

An earlier request by Oroshazi to have Kertesz take the stand at the trial was rejected by the court.

Oroshazi was present only at the start of Thursday’s court session. He left after saying he didn’t accept the legitimacy of Hungary’s Basic Law, as the Constitution is now called, and refusing to recognize the authorities’ right to put him on trial.

Oroshazi’s lawyer appealed the verdict, asking for his client’s acquittal.

The public denial, downplaying or justification of the Holocaust or of the crimes committed by Hungary’s communist regime can be punished by up to three years in prison. Last year, a Hungarian man was fined 800,000 forints ($2,750, 2,550 euros) for denying the Holocaust in a comment on the Facebook page of a Jewish advocacy group.

A group of 14 Holocaust survivors from Hungary have filed a class action lawsuit in the US against the Hungarian government and its national train company for their cooperation with the Nazis, their complicity in deporting over half a million Jews in the Holocaust and the massive confiscation of their property.

Hungary is the only state that has not yet reached a compensation settlement with Holocaust survivors or their heirs. The Hungarian government also has never been prosecuted for collaboration with the Nazis.

The Simon Wiesenthal Center has condemned a far-right commemoration in Hungary of a World War II battle in which speakers lauded a wartime pro-Nazi Hungarian leader.

A report on the feol.hu website said a Waffen-SS veteran who was scheduled to speak at Saturday's memorial in the city of Szekesfehervar did not attend for health reasons. The Wiesenthal Center said the event was "another blatant attempt to honor and glorify the perpetrators of the Holocaust."

http://www.breitbart.com/london/2017...-anti-semitic/

Hungary has demanded the resignation of the European Commission’s First Vice-president, Frans Timmermans, after he branded Prime Minister Viktor Orbán an anti-Semite for criticising billionaire mass immigration campaigner George Soros.
In a fiery address to the European Parliament in April 2017, the Hungarian leader accused Soros of “ruining the lives of millions of European with his financial speculations”.

The financier is best known in the United Kingdom as “the man who broke the Bank of England”, having raked in one and a half billion dollars from betting heavily against sterling in 1992.

Ten years later he was fined 2.2 million euros by a French court after being found guilty of insider trading, using confidential information to reap profits from formerly public-owned companies.

Nonetheless, former Dutch foreign minister Timmermans told the German liberal newspaper Die Zeit that he agreed the comments were “anti-semitic” and claimed to have been “appalled” by them.

At a press conference in Budapest on Friday, Hungarian foreign minister Péter Szijjártó categorically denied the First Vice-president’s accusation in a decisive and unequivocal response:

“We introduced the National Memorial Day for the Victims of the Holocaust, have renovated synagogues not just in Hungary, but also in neighbouring countries, and have made Holocaust denial a punishable offence according to the new Penal Code,” he declared.

“Hungary’s new constitution … guarantees the security of Hungarian Jews as part of the Hungarian nation, and the Hungarian Jewish Community can always count on the respect, friendship and protection of the Hungarian government”.

An official press release from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade described Timmermans’s allegations as “an extreme insult to Hungary”, and Szijjártó was clear that, “if an EU official gravely insults a member-state on such an issue, then he can have no choice but to resign from office”.

Szijjártó also said the First Vice-President was a coward for making his remarks in an interview with German media outlet well after Prime Minister Orbán’s address to the European Parliament, “when nobody [from the Hungarian government] could respond to it immediately”.

The minister was clear that Budapest has major issues with Soros, but insisted they have “absolutely nothing to do with George Soros’s origins or religion”.

“All this is about the fact that – through his organisations in Hungary, and hidden from the public gaze – George Soros is spending endless amounts of money to support illegal immigration,” Orbán told Magyar Idők on April 15.

“To pursue his interests he pays a number of lobbying organisations operating in the guise of civil society. He maintains a regular network, with its own promoters, its own media, hundreds of people, and its own university. He wants to keep the pressure on Hungary: the country which expects even the likes of George Soros to observe its laws.

“I believe that George Soros must not be underestimated: he is a powerful billionaire of enormous determination who, when it comes to his interests, respects neither God nor man. We want to protect Hungary, and so we must also commit ourselves to this struggle.”

Hungarian monument to Jewish Holocaust victims smashed

A monument in Hungary commemorating Jewish slave workers later murdered in the Holocaust was defaced.

At least three marble plates signifying Jewish headstones were smashed Sunday in Balf, a town located 120 miles west of Budapest, the Jewish weekly Szombat reported Monday.

A government spokesman issued a “strong condemnation” of the act, which police are investigating. There are no suspects.

Default Hungary to Veto EU Action against Poland

Quote:

The Hungarian government will use its European Union (EU) powers to veto the proposed “Article 7” procedure against Poland,
https://www.bloomberg.com/news/artic...ic-backsliding
calling that move a “violation of Poland’s sovereignty.”

According to a report in Hungary Today, the Hungarian deputy prime minister Zsolt Semjén has called the European Commission’s decision to launch an Article 7.1 procedure against Poland is “unprecedented and astounding.”

“The decision seriously violates Poland’s sovereignty. It is unacceptable that Brussels is exerting pressure on sovereign member states and arbitrarily punishing democratically elected governments,” he said.

“it is unjust that the EC fails to take steps against European member states violating European treaties,” he added, referring to the fact that the German government unilaterally abrogated the Dublin Agreement on refugees when it invited the whole Third World into Europe in 2015—but then “launches politically motivated procedures” against the Polish government.

“The EC’s actions are against European values,” he continued, “The Polish-Hungarian friendship and the Hungarian government’s commitment to treaties obliges us to step up against the Commission’s move in all forums,” Semjén said.

Asked if this could mean that Hungary would veto the proposed decision against Poland, the deputy prime minister said “yes.”

The Hungary Today report added that the ruling Fidesz party’s press chief Balázs Hidvéghi called the EC decision “proof for Brussels’ efforts to punish the countries that oppose the settlement of migrants in Europe and the mandatory resettlement quota scheme.

“Hungary will defend Poland and stand by the will of the Hungarian people who have refused the ‘Soros plan,’” he said.

Hungarian Mass Honoring Nazi Ally Canceled After Jewish Protests

BUDAPEST - A Budapest church has called off a memorial mass it was planning to hold in honor of a former Hungarian leader and Nazi ally on Saturday - International Holocaust Remembrance Day - after protests from Hungarian Jews and the World Jewish Congress.

Parliament's deputy speaker who is member of the ruling Fidesz party of Prime Minister Viktor Orban, had been due to speak at the event called in memory of interwar Governor Miklos Horthy.

The planned ceremony for Horthy, an admiral who led Hungary for 24 years until 1944 and handed over hundreds of thousands of Jews to the Nazis, triggered strong objections from Jewish organizations.

With the WJC declaring it a provocative measure honoring an "unabashed anti-semite", the Budapest church which had organized the Catholic ceremony, canceled the event on Thursday.
