SPLIT, Croatia — Two ministers and a mayor joined 500 people at a Gay Pride march on Saturday in Croatia's second city Split, where anti-gay violence marred a similar demonstration two years ago.

Hundreds of riot police escorted the demonstrators, who were demanding full equality including marriage for gay couples.

This year's march towards the Splitska Riva waterfront promenade took place without any incidents, unlike the first Gay Pride march in the city two years ago, when 10,000 anti-gay activists hurled stones and bottles at 200 demonstrators.

Newly-elected Ivo Baldasar, who became the first Croatian mayor to participate in such an event, said members of the gay, bisexual and transsexual community should have the same rights as all other citizens.

Croatia's Foreign Minister Vesna Pusic and Minister for Administration Arsen Bauk also joined the march.

Local activist Sanja Juras noted that two years ago, "the stones fell on us".

"Today, it is the mayor who walks with us in front of the procession. Much has changed," she said.

In 2003, Croatia extended the same rights to gay couples who have lived together for at least three years as those for unmarried heterosexual couples, including state recognition of shared assets.

However, the country is also strongly influenced by the Roman Catholic church which has publicly branded homosexuality a "handicap" and a "perversion".

Last month a Catholic Church-backed group launched a petition for a referendum on whether to include into the constitution a definition of marriage as the "union of a man and a woman".

The group said it has collected more than 710,000 signatures in the country of 4.2 million for the initiative which is seen as an attempt to prevent any future legalisation of homosexual marriages.

Croatian capital hosts biggest ever Gay Pride march

ZAGREB — Thousands took part on Saturday in Zagreb's biggest Gay Pride march, a day after Croatia's parliament received a petition signed by one-fifth of the EU-bound country's voters seeking a referendum that could rule out same-sex marriage.

"We have to show that we love Croatia where we live, but it also has to show that it loves all its citizens," Marko Jurcic, one of the organisers told the rally at a downtown square after an hour-long march.

"This is the country for all of us!" he shouted repeating the motto of the Croatian capital's 12th Gay Pride Parade in which some 12,000 people, according to organisers, took part.

On Friday a conservative group handed over to the parliament a petition with more than 740,000 signatures, in a country of 4.2 million people, collected during a virulent two-week campaign.

Some 1,000 supporters of the Catholic Church-backed group, In the Name of the Family, marched through Zagreb before giving the petition to the lawmakers.

It calls for a referendum on whether to add to the constitution a definition of marriage as a "union of a woman and a man". Currently there is no specific definition of marriage in the constitution.

Croatia has never had a gay marriage, but conservative activists say they want to block the possibility, after the centre-left government said it was preparing a law that would enable gay couples to register as "life partners".

The parliament must now review the petition but it has no deadline to do so.

"For Marriage Equality" read a giant pink banner carried at the head of a column of the Gay Pride marchers, escorted by special police who were however less visible than in previous years.

Participants blew whistles, waved rainbow flags while some were dressed in T-shirts saying "Marriage = Marriage", and carried banners that read "We don't Tolerate Intolerance" or "Jesus also had Two Fathers."

"I can hardly wait for us to marry," Milena Zajovic, dressed like a groom, told AFP.

"We expect a law over the issue to be adopted by the end of the year," the 30-year-old journalist said hugging her partner dressed in a long white wedding gown.

Her partner, Karla Horvat Crnogaj, 33, assured that "Croatia is ready to recognise same-sex couples."

Aleksandar Kosutic, a 43-year-old businessman, came to support his gay friends as he believes that the issue of marriage is "not an issue of sexual orientation but rather of human rights."

Gay activists and human rights groups in Croatia, which is set to join the European Union on July 1, have criticised the referendum initiative as "homophobic" and called on the government to block the move.

The issue has split the country where almost 90 percent of the population is Roman Catholic and the Church plays an important role.

I just read on a Croatian forum that the real number, according to Zagreb police and others present in the area, was no more than 5,000 max.

The anal activists always love to inflate the numbers, some were even claiming over 15,000 present.

Bosniaks? No serious Serb or Croat nationalist uses that term.

Yeah I guess technically they could cut them off at Neum, but that town is already majority Croat, also planned bridge to Peljesac which would circumvent this route, and the fact that artificial NATO created entity of Bosnia is nothing more than an EU protectorate, whose politicians can't even take a shit without first consulting their masters in the West, tells us all we need to know.

Zagreb — Croatian lawmakers voted Friday to hold a referendum on December 1 that would rule out same-sex marriage in the Roman Catholic country, despite strong objections from gay rights activists.

The referendum on whether to amend the country's constitution to define marriage as a "union between a woman and a man" was called after some 700,000 people signed a petition launched by a conservative group seeking such a nation-wide vote.

The number of people who signed the petition was much higher than required by the law for calling a referendum.

A total of 104 MPs in the 151-seat assembly backed holding of the referendum compared with 13 who voted against. The others were absent or abstained.

Currently there is no definition of marriage in the constitution of the European Union's newest member state.

Croatia does not allow same-sex marriages, but many conservatives are worried it could become possible after the centre-left government said it was preparing a law that would enable gay and lesbian couples to register as "life partners".

Zeljko Reiner of the main conservative HDZ party stressed ahead of the parliamentary vote on Friday that "Croatia is a traditional society" and argued that such a consitutional clause was not discriminatory.

"It is simply the question of safety that something... which is a basis of the Croatian society does not change," he stressed in a reference to heterosexual families.

Gay rights activists have objected to putting the matter to a popular vote, saying it would be discriminatory. They are also asking the country's top court to review whether such a referendum would even be constitutional.

"This is undoubtedly a human rights issue and as such it cannot be put to a referendum," prominent gay rights activist Sanja Juras said.

The referendum would be the first citizen-initiated national vote in the country of 4.2 million people since it proclaimed independence from the former Yugoslavia in 1991.

Under Croatian law, a referendum does not require a majority voter turnout to be valid, meaning a small number of voters would be enough to push through an actual ban on gay marriages.

In 2003, Croatia extended to same-sex couples who have lived together for at least three years the same rights as those given to unmarried heterosexual couples, including state recognition of shared assets.

But gay rights are still a sensitive issue in a country where almost 90 percent of the population is Roman Catholic and where the Church has a strong influence.

Croatia held its first gay pride parade in the capital Zagreb in 2002, when more than a dozen participants were beaten up.

Since then parades have been staged annually without major incidents, though always under heavy security.

Neven Rauk, a 28-year-old unemployed cook, told AFP that "gays here are still afraid to come out".

"We do change laws, but the mindset of our society changes rather slowly," said Rauk, who has been a victim of homophobic violence.

He said a referendum "violates the right to be different, my right to equality which is guaranteed by the constitution".

"We should be all equal before the law. If my same-sex union cannot be called marriage then I'm not equal," he added.

The Catholic Church-backed group "In the Name of the Family" rebuffs accusations of homophobia, arguing that same-sex marriage is not a human right and accusing "aggressive" gay rights groups of trying to influence society.

A recent survey showed that 54 percent of Croatians support the group's initiative, compared to 30 percent against.

"We are a traditional country and the voice of the majority should be heard," said Marija Jankovic, a 40-year-old administrator.
