Post Migrant jumped out of camper van when Brit couple arrived back from France holiday

Christine and Geoffrey Seward heard a bang in camper van while driving

Pair had just got off ferry in Plymouth after travelling from Roscoff, France

Mrs Seward, 75, went to check bang only to find migrant in van's wardrobe

He burst out of cupboard, pushed her out of the way and managed to flee

A couple had an almighty shock when a stowaway migrant jumped out of the wardrobe in their camper van after they arrived back into the UK following a touring holiday in France.

Christine Seward, 75, and her husband, Geoffrey, 86, tried to stop the illegal immigrant escaping after he burst out of the cupboard as they drove through Plymouth, Devon.

The pair had just come off a ferry from Roscoff in Brittany, France, and were driving towards their home in Exmouth, Devon, when they heard a bang.

Mrs Seward believed she had forgotten to shut the wardrobe door properly so went to investigate – only to discover the young man stood in the darkness of the cupboard.

She said: 'It was very frightening. It was so scary.

'I said to him "I will call the police". He said "No police, no money".

'With a bit of push and shove, I managed to stop him getting out of the side door.

'But he pushed a bit harder and jumped on and over the passenger seat and out through the cab door and started running.'

The Sewards believe the man managed to sneak on board their van and hide in their wardrobe as they prepared to drive off the ferry on June 11.

After the man had fled, the couple parked up and phoned the police to report the incident.

Officers were sent to the scene but were unable to trace him after he fled in darkness.

Mrs Seward said: 'When I called the police, I could hardly speak on the phone I was so shocked.

'We shook for about an hour, we just couldn't believe it.'

She said she had spotted the man on the ferry during the six-hour crossing and believes he must have slipped on before disembarking.

Mrs Seward left the van's passenger door open as she went to help her husband with the car they were towing behind before they got off the ferry.

She is now warning other holidaymakers travelling back from France to be extra-vigilant.

'We are just very fortunate that he didn't steal any belongings or passports or money,' she said.

She added that her daughter does volunteer work helping asylum seekers in Croydon, south London.

'We both really felt for this guy,' she said.

'He had nothing on him apart from the clothes on his back.

'So many of these immigrants are coming in that I feel terribly sorry for them - but they have to come through the right channels.'

Post The Channel Tunnel Reopens despite Fire, Locusts and Darkness

Striking ferry workers have set fire to tracks inside the Channel tunnel, as the chaos prompted illegal aliens to try to break into vehicles in a repeat of scenes that played out a week ago.

A Eurotunnel spokesman estimated that 30-50 protesters had caused damage, describing the union’s actions as “deplorable”. “They have been taken away by the police and we will be pressing charges against them for criminal and civil damage, and putting people’s live in danger from their actions,” he said.

Meanwhile, on the hottest day of the year, angry travellers were reduced to waiting in the sticky, crowded ticket hall at St. Pancras in London for news on the channel’s reopening

The industrial action is expected to last until Thursday, and even before the tunnel closed there were chaotic scenes at both ends, with Kent police running Operation Stack, which involved the closure of the M20 coastbound between junctions 8 and 9, in a desperate attempt to avoid gridlock across the county’s road network.

Crossings to Dunkirk and other French ports continued as normal, however French workers on the Calais ferry are protesting plans by Eurotunnel to sell two of their cross-channel ferries to rival Danish firm DFDS and the consequent job losses.

Post Militant French unions vow to keep up their Calais blockade and pledge to shut the Channel Tunnel 'at will' as truckers and holidaymakers continue to suffer

As many as 8,000 lorries are believed to be stuck in a 23-mile traffic jam on the M20 in Kent this afternoon

They hope to board ferries bound for Calais in France, but unions are allowing just one crossing at a time

Despite partially lifting the blockade, French strikers boast they can shut ferry and Eurostar crossings 'at will'

On the French side of the Channel, illegal migrants are taking advantage of the tailbacks to sneak onto lorries

Immigration officers are checking the backs of lorries for those who are hiding on board the stationary vehicles

Militant French unions have vowed to continue their blockade of Calais 'at will' as lorry drivers and holidaymakers continue to suffer massive delays on both sides of the Channel.

The blockade was partially lifted last night but unions were still restricting the service to just one ferry crossing at a time earlier today - causing huge tailbacks at both the French port and on Kent's M20 motorway.

By tonight it was announced that the Port of Calais was now operating two berths enabling P&O Ferries to run a full service to Calais. DFDS Seaways was running a full service to Dunkirk, with an additional ship diverted to the route to help accommodate heavy traffic.

There were an estimated 8,000 lorries stuck in unprecedented 23-mile queues on the M20, with vehicles stationary for such long periods of time that drivers were seen stretching their legs, having conversations standing on the tarmac and even sleeping and enjoying cups of tea.

On the French side of the Channel, illegal migrants are still trying to take advantage of the chaos to sneak onto stationary lorries. There are also reports of terrified holidaymakers being threatened by gangs of migrants demanding to be allowed to hide in cars before they are loaded onto ferries.

Thousands of lorry drivers are parked on the M20 in Kent for a fourth day as the partial closure of the Port of Calais has crippled Channel crossings.

Migrants camped near the French port have been taking advantage of slow-moving and queuing traffic by trying to board UK-bound vehicles.

Port of Dover officials said this morning they had no idea when the industrial action - the second strike by ferry workers in a week - would end.

There have been calls from the UK's Road Haulage Association for the military to be deployed to break the strike as livelihoods and lives were at risk.

Its chief executive Richard Burnett said it was 'absolute mayhem', adding: 'The time for talking around the table has passed.

'The UK and French governments must acknowledge their responsibilities to all Port of Calais users, move in and act. If this means deployment of the armed forces then so be it.

'Let's get this desperate mess sorted out now and talk about a long-term solution afterwards. The scale of the current situation has to be seen to be believed.

'The only word to describe what is happening there is absolute mayhem.'

Post Dozens of Calais migrants try to storm Channel Tunnel

Channel Tunnel services have been disrupted after about 150 migrants tried to storm the Calais terminal.

Migrants entered restricted areas on the French side overnight, delaying and cancelling services, Eurotunnel said.

A spokesman for the firm called for "immediate action" from authorities to protect the tunnel and provide a solution to the migrant crisis.

Lorries are being stacked on the M20 in Kent but passenger services should now be back to normal, Eurotunnel said.

'Immediate action'

A spokesman for Eurotunnel said there had been "huge numbers of migrants" in and around the area on Friday night.

They said: "Up to 150 migrants stormed the tunnel which caused disruption to services leading to delays and cancellations for customers.

"Eurotunnel wants immediate action from authorities to protect the tunnel - not enough is being done to stop the migrants."

Kent Police initiated phase two of Operation Stack - where freight traffic is queued on sections of the M20 - and closed roads at about 01:00 BST.

A Eurotunnel spokesman said freight services had still not returned to normal.

'Marauding mobs'

Dan Cook, operations director at Europa Worldwide, a transport and logistics business, said "marauding mobs" of migrants were breaking into the company's vehicles.

Mr Cook said: "This isn't in lay-bys off the beaten track at night, this is in broad daylight on the motorways approaching Calais and what you see, to be blunt, is marauding mobs around trailers, surrounding trailers, climbing on board, breaking open backdoors with broadly no sign of any sort of policing to prevent it.

"If we were watching television in the UK and we were seeing mass groups of people wandering around the motorway climbing on vehicles I think we would be pretty outraged and we would expect the British authorities to do something about it."

He added that he believed French authorities had an "obligation" to protect people who use the country's roads.

Earlier this week lorry drivers faced days of misery as they were held in miles of queues until Operation Stack was lifted on Friday evening.

More than 3,000 lorries were parked on the M20 after the closure of the Port of Calais earlier this week crippled Channel sailings.

The chaos was sparked after MyFerryLink workers started a wildcat strike on Monday in protest at expected job cuts in the French port city.

The Port of Dover said no ferry traffic was being held in Operation Stack and there were full services to the Port of Calais and Dunkirk.

Post Channel Tunnel grinds to a halt as 150 migrants storm inside in attempt to board UK-bound freight trains

Long delays continue today following chaos in Calais during early hours

Security inside the undersea link has been brought into question again

Kent Police have reintroduced Operation Stack on the M20 to ease traffic

Around 150 migrants stormed the Channel Tunnel as they tried to board UK-bound freight trains last night, causing delays to services and bringing traffic grinding to a halt.

French riot officers have to intervene to restore order and services were disrupted until the early hours of Saturday because of the chaos, which has left long tailbacks on the M20 for lorry drivers trying to cross the sea today.

Kent Police have reintroduced Operation Stack - less than 12 hours after it was finally lifted during French industrial action earlier this week - closing the M20 coastbound between junctions 8 and 9,

Security inside the undersea link has once more been brought into question following the latest incident.

‘There are attempts to get into the Tunnel pretty much every night, but this was one of the worse,’ a local police spokesman told MailOnline.

Exceptionally high temperatures during a summer heatwave have added to the misery for those caught up in massive traffic jams around Calais.

This morning there were long tailbacks caused by the overnight disruption, with some of the 3000-odd migrants camped in Calais still trying to get on board gridlocked lorries.

It came as the Pas de Calais prefecture revealed that, on June 26, an Ethiopian migrant died as he climbed up a pylon next to the Channel Tunnel in order to get on a moving Eurotunnel train.

It has all prompted renewed calls for a solution to the worsening Calais migrant crisis, which is costing the UK millions of pounds every year.

Britain’s Fresh Produce Consortium estimates that some £10million worth of fresh fruit and vegetables have been thrown away since the start of the year as a result of the problems.

A Eurotunnel spokesman said the overnight incident affected freight traffic, while passenger services were unaffected.

He said: ‘Eurotunnel reiterates its call to the authorities to provide a solution to the migrant crisis and restore order to the Calais region.’

Home Secretary Theresa May and her French counterpart Bernard Cazeneuve held emergency talks in Paris on Wednesday, agreeing to put more money into improving security around the port and the Channel Tunnel.

France and Britain signed an agreement last September creating a fund of just over £3.5million a year to help Calais cope with the influx of migrants.

The money went on reinforcing security around Calais port, and access to the Channel Tunnel, with some also used to fight so-called ‘people smugglers’.

British drivers have been advised by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office to keep their doors locked when travelling through Calais.

There are fears that the 3000 plus migrants already in Calais will double as the summer continues Hundreds took advantage of industrial action by striking ferry workers earl

Post Migrants disrupt cross-channel tunnel services at Calais

LONDON, July 4 (Reuters) - Dozens of migrants trying to stow away on vehicles crossing the Channel by tunnel between France and England broke through perimeter fences at Calais overnight, temporarily halting traffic, a Eurotunnel spokesman said on Saturday.

The disruption was the latest in a series of incidents involving some 3,000 migrants, mostly from Africa and the Middle East, who are camped around the northern French port in the hope of reaching Britain.

"At around 7 p.m. (1800 GMT) on Friday there were migrants all around the perimeter trying to break through the fences," the Eurotunnel spokesman told Reuters. "There was a lot of disruption."

Both freight and passenger services were temporarily halted during the night but are now running normally, although with some delays due to the backlog, he added.

Eurostar, which also runs passenger trains through the tunnel, though not at night, said its services had not been affected.

Over the past month, the growing numbers of migrants at Calais have also been trying to take advantage of a series of strikes by port workers that have caused long lines of trucks to build up on the approach roads to the port.

Calais is one of the front lines in a wider immigration crisis in which European countries are struggling to agree among themselves how to deal with growing numbers of migrants fleeing conflict or poverty.

Many want to get to Britain because they speak English, have family connections or are convinced they stand a better chance of getting a job there.

France and Britain agreed on Thursday to step up efforts to secure the port and the Channel Tunnel.

Post Truckers during Calais migrant crisis should demand French military protection

Road Haulage Association has said French military should be deployed

Chief executive Richard Burnett claims 'things are beginning to boil over'

British lorry drivers face migrants 'armed with bars, knives and even guns'

Around 150 migrants tried to storm the terminal in Calais yesterday

Someone will end up being killed unless security is bolstered to protect lorry drivers amid the escalating migrant crisis in Calais, British haulage officials said.

French authorities have faced claims they are not doing enough to safeguard truckers from intimidation, violence and attempts by migrants to climb on to UK-bound HGVs.

The latest problems in Calais saw around 150 migrants cause disruption and cancellations to Channel Tunnel services yesterday when they tried to storm the French terminal.

Scroll down for video

The Road Haulage Association (RHA) has suggested deployment of the French military to boost security in the port city amid fears a fatality could occur.

RHA chief executive Richard Burnett, who recently visited Calais to see the problems first-hand, said: 'I think it's a desperate situation for truck drivers.

'Put yourself in their situation - you are on your own trying to get through and you've got 20 migrants around your truck trying to get on, and you're on your own trying to get them off.

'They are intimidating, some of them have metal bars, knives and, in one incident, a gun was pointed at a trucker.'

He added: 'Somebody is going to get killed. I think things are beginning to boil over.'

Mr Burnett said Britain is seen as 'too attractive a place' for migrants to come to, and he called for a long-term solution involving governments and the EU.

The crisis has escalated in recent weeks in Calais, with around 3,000 people displaced from countries including Eritrea, Syria and Afghanistan setting up camp near the port.

Amid mounting calls for a solution, Keith Vaz, the Home Affairs Select Committee chairman, visited Calais yesterday and met its deputy mayor Philippe Mignonet.

The latest incident caused the return of queues on the M20 in Kent for lorry drivers trying to cross the Channel after police reintroduced Operation Stack, which was later lifted.

The disruption came in the week that more than 3,000 truckers had to queue for several days in high temperatures on the M20 following a wildcat strike by ferry workers in France.

All phases of Operation Stack had only been lifted for a matter of hours before the migrants attempted to storm the Chunnel terminal.

The bold attempt by migrants led to renewed calls for authorities to act to solve the worsening crisis, which is costing the UK economy millions of pounds.

The Fresh Produce Consortium estimates that £10 million of fresh fruit and vegetables have been thrown away since the start of the year as a result of the problems in Calais.

And Port of Dover officials said last week's ferry strike cost the UK economy £1 billion.

They have joined calls for 'robust contingency plans' t

Default Migrants try to storm Channel Tunnel

UNITED KINGDOM – Channel Tunnel services have been disrupted after about 150 migrants tried to storm the Calais terminal.

Migrants entered restricted areas on the French side overnight, delaying and cancelling services, Eurotunnel said.

A spokesman for the firm called for “immediate action” from authorities to protect the tunnel and provide a solution to the migrant crisis.

Le Shuttle passenger services had been operating as normal, although technical problems have led to further delays.

Passengers, who are facing delays of up to two hours, are still being encouraged to check in on time.

Freight services are also delayed, Eurotunnel said, and freight lorries are queuing on the M20 for the second time this week.

Kent Police initiated phase two of Operation Stack – where freight traffic is queued on sections of the M20 – and closed roads at about 01:00 BST.

Seriously, France and the UK should have their militaries guarding the Channel Tunnel at both ends, doesn't that constitute a national border?

Oh, I forgot--they are the ones "rescuing" these savage invader hordes on the high seas and elsewhere. The same reason the US military doesn't secure the border with Mexico, because they're ordered to do the exact opposite.

Post Migrant is found dead in the Channel Tunnel after Eurotunnel terminal is invaded in latest bid to reach Britain

One of six sections of Channel Tunnel has been closed for investigation

90-minute delays for passengers and freight services are also affected

A migrant was found dead in the Channel Tunnel today after the Eurotunnel terminal was invaded by refugees trying to reach Britain.

One of the six sections of the tunnel was closed for investigation, causing another round of delays for travellers. It was as yet unclear how the migrant died.

Freight traffic was being disrupted but there were also delays to passenger services of up to 90 minutes following the intrusion near Calais, Channel tunnel operator Eurotunnel said.

It is the second migrant fatality to take place in as many weeks following the reported death of an Eritrean while trying to get on a train at Coquelles last month.

A spokesman said: 'We don't know how many were responsible for the intrusion overnight.

'The French authorities were conducting searches during the early hours.

'Services are partly suspended, and the disruption is principally affecting freight services.

'Passenger services are running with slight delays. This has become a nightly occurrence.'

The alarm was raised at the Eurotunnel terminal in France in the early hours causing a partial closure of the tunnel.

Kent Police said delays were building around junction 11a of the M20, where lorries are queued as part of Operation Stack when cross-Channel services hit disruption.

The migrant crisis in Calais has escalated in recent months, with around 3,000 people displaced from countries including Eritrea, Syria and Afghanistan setting up camp near the port.

Last week, more than 3,000 truckers had to queue for several days in high temperatures on the M20 following a wildcat strike by ferry workers in France.

Industrial action by ferry workers this summer has come on top of the problems faced by hauliers with migrants desperately trying to clamber on board their HGVs to the UK.

French authorities have faced claims they are not doing enough to safeguard lorry drivers from intimidation, violence and attempts by migrants to climb on.

The Road Haulage Association (RHA) has suggested deployment of the French military to boost security in Calais amid fears that a fatality could occur.

The Fresh Produce Consortium estimates that £10 million of fresh fruit and vegetables have been thrown away since the start of the year as a result of the problems in Calais.

And Port of Dover officials said last week's ferry strike cost the UK economy £1billion.

They have joined calls for 'robust contingency plans' to be introduced to ensure the port – a £100 billion trade route – can work unimpeded by others.

Home Secretary Theresa May and her French counterpart Bernard Cazeneuve last week agreed to increase the joint intervention fund to improve security around the port and the Channel Tunnel.

French aid workers have reported a 'catastrophic' situation, with predictions that 2,000 more migrants could arrive over the summer at the camp, du

Post Dream of better life in Britain fuels Calais migrant chaos

By Pierre Savary and William James

CALAIS/LONDON July 7 (Reuters) - Like many migrants drawn to the French port of Calais, Ali, a 22-year-old Iraqi, is convinced his life will be better if he can make it across the 30 km (20 mile) stretch of sea separating him from Britain.

"I know people in London, they can help me and it will be a new life," Ali said, speaking on the outskirts of a Calais migrant slum. "It cannot be worse than in France."

Dislocated by war, political turmoil and poverty, 3,000 migrants like Ali are living in makeshift camps in and around Calais, hoping to find a way to the other side.

If they make it, they expect to find illicit employment in Britain's booming shadow economy or to claim asylum in a system often seen as more generous than the French equivalent.

Such beliefs are encouraged by the networks of traffickers who squeeze money out of migrants at every stage of their journey from the war zones of the Middle East and from Africa.

But for the few who make the crossing, that expectation may be wide of the mark.

"All the belief that the roads of London, the roads of Britain are paved with gold - this is not the situation," said Habib Rahman, Chief Executive of the Joint Council for the Welfare of Immigrants, a British organisation.

"What we know of the people here is that they are really struggling."

Calais, which has sea and rail links to Britain, has been a migration bottleneck for centuries, but tension has risen in recent weeks due to a French ferry workers' strike which has blocked traffic around the port.

Television images of migrants lining roads and scrambling to jump into moving vehicles have provoked public and political anger, providing a stark illustration of a growing Europe-wide immigration crisis.

British Prime Minister David Cameron said the scenes were "totally unacceptable" and ministers from both France and Britain have pledged to increase security around the port to protect the economically important flows of goods and tourists across the channel.

Britain has sent a two mile long 9 foot (2.75 m) high fence, last used to secure the 2012 London Olympics, to help keep migrants away from the entrance to the rail tunnel linking the countries.

'WHY ENGLAND?'

For many of those in Calais, the risks, which include suffocation in the backs of trucks, falling from moving vehicles and violence in migrant camps, are worth taking for a chance of entering the British system.

"I ended up here when I left my country where I risked my life. I fled. I do not know where to go, but not here," said 25 year-old Aman, an Eritrean interviewed by Reuters near Calais. "Why in England? I was told that it was better."

Britain's economy overtook France to become the second largest in the European Union last year, according the International Monetary Fund, and Britain is forecast to grow twice as fast as France this year.

With support groups denouncing the living conditions of migrants in Calais as inhuman, the French

Post Migrant dies in Channel Tunnel trying to reach Britain, say French authorities

A migrant died on Tuesday trying to reach Britain through the Channel Tunnel, French authorities in the Pas-de-Calais region have confirmed.

One of the six sections of the tunnel was closed for investigation, but train traffic had not stopped. It was as yet unclear how the migrant died.

“Following the detection of migrants on a freight shuttle early this morning, the shuttle was immediately stopped,” said the Pas-de-Calais prefecture, the local state authority.

“During a security inspection by border police, a deceased migrant was found in the tunnel”, it said in a statement.

Gilles Debove, of the police union Unité SGP-Police FO, said: "Around 400 migrants arrived and besieged the tunnel, as they do almost every night. One managed to board a freight shuttle and unfortunately fell off, losing his life."

Eurostar announced that "trains are subject to delays" in another tweet without further detail, while Eurotunnel said the shuttle on which the incident took place had now left the tunnel on the French side.

Update: Trains are subject to delays this morning due to the closure of a section of the Eurotunnel.

Last month, a 26-year old Eritrean migrant was killed on the French side of the Channel Tunnel after trying to board a moving freight train. He was thrown off and collided with a concrete pylon.

Days later, a female migrant was found dead on the A16 motorway after being crushed by a vehicle.

Post EU land British taxpayers with 57m bill to DOUBLE size of Calais port amid migrant crisis

British taxpayers face a £57m bill for the expansion of Calais

The European Union (EU) has authorised an enormous project to more than double the size of the port, despite the chaotic migrant situation in the town.

Britain could be expected to contribute €80 million - or £57 million - towards the enormous expansion, which will include a new ferry terminal and a rail link to the south of France.

However, the plans appear to include no funding for new security measures above the basic policing already being operated by the port.

French police have almost completely lost control of the port town in recent months, with thousands of migrants roaming the streets unchecked trying to break into lorries and make their way to Britain.

Despite that, this week the European Commission (EC) formally gave the go-ahead for the project, announcing that it would be supported with €270 million of public money in the form of EU grants.

However, it has been claimed European Investment Bank (EIB) papers show that taxpayers will actually be expected to underwrite a whopping €700 million in loans for the build.

Britain contributes around 11 per cent of the EU budget every year meaning our share of the bill could reach a heart-stopping £57m - enough to hire 3,700 NHS nurses.

The project will include the building of a new terminal and a freight rail link to Perpignan in the south of the country, near the border with Spain, which is a major transit route for migrants headed to Britain.

Steven Woolfe, Ukip's spokesman for migration and financial affairs, said British taxpayers would be outraged at having to stump up for the project.

Mr Woolfe, who last month became the first British politician to visit the infamous 'Jungle 2' camp in Calais, also raised serious concerns that the expansion would make it easier for thousands of migrants to smuggle themselves across the Channel.

He told Express.co.uk: "The British taxpayer is funding a new Calais port which doesn't have the protection and security of passengers at its heart.

"I do not believe British taxpayers should be funding a French port. It should be a private business and should be financed by the French Government and the French people."

The project, dubbed Calais 2015, is part of a grand European-wide vision to create a super-fast transport link between Scotland in the north of the continent and Spain in the south.

It was first announced in 2013, but was referred to the EU over fears the huge element of state funding involved may break competition laws. The build was finally given the go-ahead by the EC this week.

However, Mr Woolfe said: "We have to say that an improved and expanded facility at Calais is necessary, as long as they have got the security and safety in mind of passengers and they've got the proper facilities to ensure the security of the borders.

"There is nothing so far that we are reading that shows that they are looking at the security of the passengers and the lorry owners in the plan

What a stupid article.

There are over 100 million natives and invaders living on these islands with a possible 40 million of those being actual natives. The carrying capacity of these islands is 10 million at best, with that being a very cornucopian estimate.

All the shit you eat and junk you desire from places such as China and Eastern Europe comes in through ports such as Calais. (Before returning for the most part as empty vessels except for the household garbage that overpopulated Sweden needs to use as a fuel source.)

NO INVADERS = NO NEED FOR BIGGER PORTS (hence no funding for new security measures)

Post UK to set up 'secure zone' in Calais to halt migrants

LONDON (AP) — Britain says it's creating a "secure zone" in the French port of Calais for British-bound trucks to tackle the problem of migrants stowing away in the vehicles.

Home Secretary Theresa May said Tuesday that the move would provide a secure waiting area for 230 vehicles and stop truck drivers from becoming sitting targets for those attempting to illegally enter Britain.

The northern French city of Calais is a key port for sea and land crossings to Britain. In recent months, thousands of migrants from Eritrea, Sudan and beyond have camped out around the city, and some try to sneak across the English Channel by getting onboard trucks and freight trains.

The encampments have soured relations between Britain and France, which blame each other for failing to cope with the crisis.

Post Three migrants suffer serious electric shocks after trying to sneak into Britain through the Channel Tunnel, causing closures and delays

One man from Afghanistan left severely injured after being electrocuted

Two more Pakistanis received minor injuries in accident early this morning

Six trains delayed for more than an hour as police rushed to the scene

Comes just a week after another man was found dead inside the tunnel

Three desperate migrants attempting to smuggle themselves into Britain through the Channel Tunnel have been left in hospital after being electrocuted in the early hours of this morning.

One of the men, from Afghanistan, suffered severe injuries after being hit by an arch of electricity from power lines, while two Pakistanis received minor injuries.

The accident, which happened at a loading platform on the French side of the tunnel, caused delays of more than an hour after it happened between 2 and 3am.

A spokesman for Eurotunnel, the company that controls the rail crossing, said one of the twelve lines had to be shut down while medics and police rushed to the scene.

Around five truck transports, carrying a total of 150 heavy good vehicles, were left stranded, while one passenger train, carrying a 'handful' of people was also delayed.

As well as removing the injured men, police had to remove a larger group who were still waiting close to the tracks while likely waiting for an opportunity to board the trains themselves.

News of the new injuries comes just a week after a migrant was found dead inside the tunnel in what police believe was a failed attempt to board a fast-moving shuttle train to Britain.

The man, who has yet to be identified, is believed to have died from head injuries, according to campaign group Calais Migrant Solidarity.

On that occasion one of the six sections of the tunnel had to be completely closed, causing delays of up to 90 minutes for passengers and goods lorries on both sides of the Channel.

In June another man, named as 32-year-old Getenet Legese Yacob, from Ethiopia, also died while attempting to board a truck transport on the French side of the tunnel.

The spike in deaths and injuries comes amid a rapidly worsening migrant crisis across the EU, with around 3,000 displaced people believed to be camping around Calais alone.

British authorities have demanded French police get a grip on the situation, as video footage shows desperate men and women allowed to walk along motorways unchecked, before trying to break into lorries as they wait to cross the Channel.

Meanwhile the mayor of Calais, Natacha Bouchart, has blamed Britain's attractive welfare system as the cause of the crisis, saying migrants would not be trying to enter this country in such large numbers if the benefits they received were lessened.

Strikes by French workers at the port have caused further chaos, leaving lorry drivers stranded along the motorways where they fall prey to migrants trying to get on board.

Just last week, more strikes were threatened by 600 French union workers who blamed British authorities for shutting down a French ferry firm under anti-co

The Leader of France’s National Front party, Marine Le Pen, is running for the presidency of the northern region of Nord-Pas-de-Calais. Calais is suffering migrant overcrowding problems, that the regional government has ignored.

“There’s no time to lose,” Le Pen said in an interview on France’s TELETV. “The situation [in Calais] is degrading fast and we have to act now.”

Marine Le Pen said that she is planning to “protect the people of Nord-Pas-de-Calais, who have been neglected by the Socialist majority.”

A recent OpinionWay poll has shown that Le Pen is likely to win. The regional elections take place in December 2015, with her position as mayor starting January 1st, 2016. This is a big move for France in the right direction, a country that has been very strongly liberal.

The French port of Calais is a popular destination for migrants to cross over to Great Britain. Around 2,000 refugees are currently living in Calais camps, most of whom are welfare tourists, simply looking for the best place to live for free. The conditions in the Calais migrant camps are very poor. Migrants remain at the camps until they can find a way to illegally smuggle themselves into the United Kingdom, usually by sneaking aboard trucks.

Since becoming leader of the National Front, Le Pen, who took over leadership from her father, has repeatedly stated that she stands for a radical change in political priorities and intends to change policies in order to reduce the influx of illegal immigrants in France.
