Moldova’s Jews feel an anti-Semitic backlash after a corrupt Jewish politician flees to Israel

CHISINAU, Moldova (JTA) — Given enough vodka, some of Shimon Katz’s non-Jewish acquaintances here usually bring up a name that has complicated his relationship with them.

That name is Ilan Shor, and it belongs to a Jewish businessman-turned-lawmaker who is believed to have fled to Israel to escape corruption charges.

Last year Shor, a 32-year-old native of Israel, won a seat in Moldova’s parliament despite his 2017 sentence to 7 1/2 years in jail. Many believe he entered politics to evade prison over a $1 billion embezzlement.

Shor, who is married to the Russian pop singer Jasmine, has been less than shy about advertising his wealth. He has flown across Europe in private jets and frequented the most prestigious clubs and hotels on the French Riviera. He also bought the Milsami soccer club, giving out free tickets to matches and upping the team’s professional level, and opened a world-class amusement park for children — the entrance is free.

Shor’s ability to avoid a prison cell has angered critics, however. They allege he has done so by bribing justice officials.

It's actually common for jewish criminals, especially murderers and child-rapists, to flee to Pissrael after committing horrific crimes in their Western host countries. Leonid Nevzlin is one example:

Yes, Mondrowitz was alleged to have molested hundreds of children, but unfortunately those allegations were never substantiated in a court (as far as I know); he was only indicted for sodomizing four Italian-American boys, and that's why he fled to Pissrael.

Yes, somebody attacked Mondrowitz in the street, but it appears that he only sustained light injuries, so his situation hasn't really changed. In fact, the pissraeli authorities continue to protect him, even though they know that he's a pedophile:

In Moldova, Jewish teens go to schools to dispel anti-Semitic stereotypes

CHISINAU, Moldova (JTA) — Fifteen Christian seventh-graders at the City Theater School in this capital city sit in a circle listening attentively while two Jewish teenagers visiting their classroom talk about Jewish traditions.

“What do you think a Jew looks like?” asks Arina Andriuschenko, standing at the blackboard with a piece of chalk in her hand.

As the students offer responses, Arina draws their description: a stick figure of an Orthodox Jew with a huge nose and sidelocks playing the violin.

The other Jewish visitor, Nikita Bivol, passes around a blue-and-white kippah for the kids to try on. He also has a menorah to help explain the holiday of Hanukkah and some matzah, which he passes around for tasting.

After finishing their presentation, Nikita and Arina invite the students to ask questions.

“Why did Hitler hate the Jews so much?” asks Linda Papoulidu, a 13-year-old in a pink sweater. Her classmate, Xenia Godoroja, inquires why Jews love money.

“Well, the Jews didn’t have their own country, so they had to move from one country to another, and they weren’t allowed to get regular jobs, so they went into business,” Nikita replies. “Anyway, that’s just an old stereotype.”

Nikita and Arina are volunteers for a program called Likrat Moldova, which brings together Jewish and Christian Moldovan teenagers in an effort to to dispel the negative and sometimes insidious myths about Jews that have permeated Moldovan society for centuries.
