Italy
ROME (EJP)--- Italian Interior Minister Giuliano Amato ordered Friday the closure of a blog on Internet that listed the names of 162 Jewish University professors whore are accused of “doing lobby in favour of the Zionists.”
The move came after Rome's Jewish Community complained to the authorities Signed by "Re" (king, in Italian) the blog also displayed a number of articles and weblinks dedicated to Holocaust revisionism, to former Italian fascist dictator Benito Mussolini and to anti-Zionism. The site was shut down Friday at 1.25 pm. The website confessed how the author managed to obtain the 162 names: they were copied from a list of signatures from a petition protesting against an anti-Semitic academic boycott which took place in the UK months ago. The blog explained that most of the 162 professors “belong to La Sapienza University of Rome, have a Jewish last name and publicly support Israeli politics”. The professors are accused of serving the cause of Israel and not the interest of Italy, are indicated as spy inside the Italian system and accused of giving to Israel all kinds of scientific info (thesis, data, researches and everything carried out in universities) and “that would explain why Israel is so avant-garde.” The blog also calls on Italian students to be careful with their Jewish professors and to learn how to recognize a Jewish surname. Rome’s Jewish community spokesperson, Riccardo Pacifici, declared: "We will not get frightened”. He called on the Italian University and on the whole Italian society to show unity and bring an action “in order to stop a cancer that might grow and hit anybody”. The reaction, he added, "cannot be limited to the people directly concerned”. Italian University Minister Fabio Mussi recalled the 1938 Racial Laws adopted by Mussolini. “The expulsion of the Jews from our Universities, he said, was one of the worst losses for Italian culture and science”, and the he added: “Anti-Semitism is the poison of civilization”. The Chancellor of La Sapienza University, Renato Guarini, condemned the blog as “as intolerable act of intolerance, totally antithetic to the values and the mission of this University”. Politicians from all political sides condemned the anti-Semitic website. Among the Jewish academicians whose names were on the "black list," modern history Professor Anna Foa told the Italian daily Il Corriere della Sera that "the persons responsible for this delirious initiative committed a crime and shall be punished". "We are talking about names and anti-Semitic slogans: it is an impressive and quiet scary improvement of racial hatred,” she said. According to History professor Marco Teodori “unfortunately there is nothing new about it. But we need to immediately and publicly talk about it, in order to avoid all steps backwards”. http://www.ejpress.org/article/24092# |

Re: Italian police shut down blog listing 162 Jewish University professors
I don't know what they are crying about, isn't there an internet list somewhere of 'self-hating' Jews, that is put out by other Jews?

Italians mark war massacre
Killing of 15,000 men, women and children commemorated after 60 years Sophie Arie in Rome Friday February 11, 2005 The Guardian Over the past few days millions of Italians have been watching dramatic scenes of ethnic cleansing on their television screens. But the images are not of the Holocaust, Rwanda or Darfur: it is the first film to be made in Italy about the massacre of up to 15,000 men, women and children, many killed by Yugoslav communists towards the end of the second world war just for being Italian. It is the hardest-hitting part of a government campaign to draw attention to a little-known event which was marked for the first time yesterday, 60 years on, with a national day of remembrance. Parliament observed a minute's silence and the foreign minister, Gianfranco Fini, and other dignitaries attended a military ceremony in the north-eastern city of Trieste, where many of the crimes were committed. Red, white and green lapel ribbons and 3.5m special stamps were issued by the newly formed 10th February Committee. Between 1943 and 1945 thousands of Italians living in Trieste, Gorizia and the Istrian peninsula were tortured, shot or pushed to their deaths in rocky chasms by communists determined to cleanse Yugoslavia of its Italian population. Some were sympathisers of Benito Mussolini's fascist regime in Italy. Others were innocent civilians. They were left, some still alive to rot in natural ditches known in Italian as foibe. About 300,000 Italians had been forced to flee the area by 1947 and estimates of the number killed vary between 6,000 and 15,000. After the war the massacres were swept under the political carpet as Italy sought to heal its wartime wounds. Most of the so-called foibe killings have never been properly investigated. Italian history books have traditionally portrayed communist partisans as national heroes who fought to free the country from fascism. Italian communists and today's hard left have long tried to bury the matter, out of embarrassment. But the centre-right government of Silvio Berlusconi, who personally considers communists a lingering threat to Italy, is determined to make sure that as many Italians as possible are aware of this dark part of the country's past. In the run up to the memorial day, more than 10 million people watched the first film on the subject, Il Cuore nel Pozzo (Heart in the ditch) which cost the state television service RAI €4.5m (£3.09m) to produce. The film shows the atrocities through through the eyes of a group of children who manage to escape, though the priest accompanying them is shot. "If we look back to the 20th century we see pages of history we'd prefer to forget," Mr Berlusconi said in advance of yesterday's events. "But we cannot and should not forget." The communications minister, Maurizio Gasparri, a member of the National Alliance, which traces its roots back to Mussolini's fascist party, said: "We must pull from this abyss of lies a truth hidden by the imposition of a cultural bias." The party has openly supported Il Cuore nel Pozzo, which had its premiere in a conference hall built for Mussolini outside Rome, calling it "a historic event". While the Italian hard-left has long tried to bury this part of the country's history, centre-left politicians have agreed that it is time to face up to the past Last week the mayor of Rime, Walter Veltroni, went to the killing grounds to pay homage to the dead. "The Holocaust was a tragedy without equal, but it was not the only tragedy of the 20th century," he said. "What is certain is what I have seen here is witness to a guilty silence, even involving the left, the communists". But critics argue that the film fails to address all sides of the story. The region around Trieste and the Istrian peninsula had come under Italian control after the first world war and had been brutally "Italianised" by Mussolini's henchmen. The Slovenian foreign minister, Ivo Vajgl, criticised the making of the film last year as an "offence and provocation" to the Slovenian people. http://www.guardian.co.uk/internatio...410549,00.html |

Italian royal apologizes for exile compensation bid
ROME (AFP)---A member of Italy's now-defunct royal family apologized Thursday for seeking compensation from the Italian state for their 56 years of forced exile, the ANSA news agency reported.
"I'm sorry for the unpleasantness caused," Emanuele Filiberto told ANSA in an interview three months after his family, the Savoys, filed papers seeking 260 million euros (385 million dollars) in compensation plus interest. Filiberto's father Vittorio Emanuele, now 71, demanded 170 million euros in November and Filiberto, 35, asked for 90 million euros. Their bid sparked outrage among anti-Fascist and Jewish groups. The Italian government rejected the demand out of hand, saying the state owed nothing to the former royal family. "Italians were right to react the way they did," Filiberto said, adding: "Italy does not need this extra problem. I don't want to create a problem for Italy." The male heirs of the Savoy family were sent into exile a year after the end of World War II because king Vittorio Emmanuel III had collaborated with the fascist regime of Benito Mussolini on anti-Jewish laws. The king, who reigned from 1900 to 1946, co-signed laws that allowed nearly 8,000 Italian Jews to be deported by the occupying German forces starting in 1943. Vittorio Emmanuel III abdicated in May 1946 and his son Umberto II succeeded him, but only for a month, before a referendum in June 1946 abolished the monarchy. The family was allowed to return to Italy through a law reforming the constitution that was adopted in 2002. Vittorio Emanuele was arrested last year for his alleged involvement in a vast pimping and illegal gaming network and put under house arrest. http://www.ejpress.org/article/news/24266 |
