The Russian stock market has delivered the biggest returns to investors around the world this year. Global rate cuts and increased dividend payouts have been driving investor interest in Russia.

The MSCI Russia Index which tracks the 23 largest Russian publicly-listed companies has surged 44 percent since the start of the year, according to Sberbank analyst Cole Akeson.

That is almost four times the returns of the MSCI Emerging Markets Index which includes Russian stocks and companies listed in 23 other developing economies such as China, Brazil, Mexico and India, the analyst told business news outlet RBC.

A jury of 9 women and 3 men recently convicted Roger Stone on all counts related to the Robert Mueller probe. The trial has revealed to millions the vast institutional corruption at the heart of the American legal system.

The judge who has overseen almost all of the civil and criminal cases related to Trump-world, Amy Berman Jackson, was once described by her son as "white, liberal and Jewish."

Berman Jackson's long track record of appalling political prejudice should've led to her recusal from the case, but federal prosecutors were able to game the judge selection process by lying and claiming Paul Manafort's illegal lobbying proceedings had "overlapping facts" with Stone's perjury charges!

Berman Jackson was highly criticized when during Manafort's lobbying violation and unreported income trial, she decided to grant fellow Jewish prosecutor Andrew Weissman's wish to revoke his $10 million dollar bail and torture him in solitary confinement until the case's conclusion, a decision that is almost unprecedented for white collar crime cases.

While the use of solitary confinement is strictly regulated on a local level, federal prosecutors overstep their boundaries and use this tactic liberally whenever they need a quick and clean plea in witch hunts they don't want scrutinized, as seen with Maria Butina.

Butina, a claustrophobic, pled guilty to false charges of being a Russian spy after being stuffed in a 7x10 segregated housing unit. Ultimately, Manafort held out, but his appeals were dismissed and he received a harsh 7 1/2 year sentence for crimes seldom prosecuted in DC, like tax evasion and not properly filling out a Foreign Agents Registration Act form. This was topped off with a Judge Judy style moralizing lecture from Berman Jackson, attacking Manafort for continuing to insist on his innocence.

(JTA) — A Russian state-owned bank sent to one of its clients a promotional code that contained the phrase “Kill Jews.”

Artem Chapaev, a former creative consultant at Amnesty International from Moscow, on Wednesday posted on Twitter a screen shot of the password, which he received as a text to his smartphone from Sberbank.

The code was in Russian but the Latin alphabet letters that comprised the code were: “CRYVKILLJEWS.”

“This is really no Photoshop. We are surprised ourselves, but this situation is pure coincidence. Our code generator didn’t mean to offend anyone,” the bank wrote.

The incident coincided with the publication of an Anti-Defamation League survey of 9,000 people in Europe and beyond that suggested that the prevalence of anti-Semitic sentiment in Eastern Europe, including Russia, has risen significantly since 2015.

JERUSALEM (JTA) — The mother of an Israeli-American woman being held in a Russian prison has asked Russian President Vladimir Putin to pardon her daughter.

Yaffa Issachar, the mother of Naama, sent the letter through the Greek Orthodox Patriarch of Jerusalem Theophilos III, the Hebrew daily Maariv reported.

The Patriarch met last week with Putin in Moscow, where he was visiting by invitiation of the Russian Church. He met with Yaffa Issachar in Jerusalem before leaving for Russia and delivered her direct message to Putin.

“Dear Vladimir Vladimirovich! I, Yaffa Issachar, the mother of Na’ama Issachar, who has been in prison for seven months, plead with the heartache of a mother to pardon my daughter and return her to her family,” the message read, according to Maariv.

'Something is rotten with the state of Denmark', or if not Denmark then certainly the United States of America. It's the only conclusion one can draw from the way the absolutely normal is nowadays treated as the most extraordinary drama.

On Monday, US President Donald Trump met Russian foreign minister Sergei Lavrov. It's about as normal a diplomatic event as one could possibly imagine, but it caused much of the American commentariat to go into a collective meltdown.

'Trump welcoming Russia's top diplomat to the Oval Office is one of his most brazen moves yet,' declared the Washington Post, which makes you think that Trump really needs to step up his game on the brazenness front. The Post isn't alone in thinking this way, however. What one might call the 'liberal' TV channels leapt on the story too, dragging in some representatives of the American security apparatus to ram home the point (there was a time when liberals regarded the FBI and CIA with suspicion, but such days are apparently long gone).

And so it was that CNN brought on as a guest former FBI deputy director Andrew McCabe to 'explain why the photograph tweeted by President Trump of his meeting with Russian foreign minister Sergei Lavrov is so extraordinary.' As McCabe told CNN:

There's no doubt there's something deeply odd about the way this president interacts with Russia. We've never seen anything like this before. ... Russia is our most significant enemy on the world stage. ... I don't think that we've ever seen a photograph out of the Oval Office on the lines of the one we saw today.

Meanwhile, MSNBC had its own star witness, former Under Secretary of State Richard Stengel. 'Why is a head of state meeting with the Russian foreign minister?' Stengel asked, 'Vladimir Putin doesn't meet with Mike Pompeo when he comes to Moscow. So it's very curious and it's very strange.'

Actually Rick, dear boy, Putin does meet with Pompeo, as you can see from this photo here. But when did one ever let little details like factual accuracy get in the way of a good line?

Which makes you wonder what they'd all make of this picture.

Senate panel advances Russia sanctions bill 'from hell'

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee approved legislation on Wednesday that would impose sanctions on Russia, but there was no indication of when the full Senate might vote on the measure that one sponsor called the sanctions bill “from hell.”

The vote was 17-5 to advance the bill in the Republican-controlled committee. All five “no” votes came from Republicans, including the chairman, Senator Jim Risch, as well as Ron Johnson, Rand Paul, Johnny Isakson and John Barrasso.

The legislation must pass the full Senate and House of Representatives before it can be sent for President Donald Trump to sign into law or veto.

JERUSALEM (JTA) — A Moscow court upheld the verdict against an American-Israeli woman jailed on charges of drug smuggling on Thursday after a hearing in which she asserted that she had been tricked into signing a confession.

Naama Issachar, 25, was sentenced to 7 1/2 years in prison in October following her conviction for smuggling marijuana into the country. She had been detained since April after nine grams (less than one-third of an ounce) of marijuana were found in her luggage.
