Smile Dumb Criminal Nominee

You would have thought that a 15 year veteran of the El Paso Police Department would know about security cameras at Wal Mart. The badge is the only thing that differentiates a cop from a common criminal.

Police arrested an off-duty officer at a Lower Valley Walmart this afternoon on shoplifting charges. Officer Anthony Weathersbee, who has been with the department for 15 years, was arrested after 1 p.m. today at the Walmart store at 9441 Alameda.

Police said store employees allegedly saw Weathersbee on a surveillance camera hiding several items on his person, paying for other items then trying to leave the store. He was detained by store security officers at the door and detained for police.

Weathersbee faces a charge of theft over $50/under $500 and is expected to be booked into an El Paso County Jail later today on a $300 bond.
A police spokesman said Weathersbee has been placed on administrative leave.

El Paso police officer resigns after shoplifting arrest

by Daniel Borunda \ El Paso Times
Posted: 03/16/2012 09:25:48 AM MDT

An off-duty police officer arrested earlier this week on suspicion of shoplifting resigned Thursday from the El Paso Police Department, police officials said. Officer Anthony Weathersbee was arrested Tuesday after being stopped by store security with items he had allegedly stolen from a Walmart store in the Lower Valley. Sgt. Chris Mears, a department spokesman, said Weathersbee was not working at the time of his arrest because he had been on medical leave for a work-related injury since September.

When asked whether Weathersbee had been investigated in the past, Mears said Weathersbee was disciplined for off-duty misconduct in April. The type of misconduct and the punishment were not immediately disclosed.

On Tuesday afternoon, Weathersbee was stopped by loss-prevention officers after he allegedly stole a DVD of the movie "The Adventures of Tintin" and a flashlight from the sporting goods department of the Walmart at 9441 Alameda, police said.

Police said loss-prevention officers saw Weathersbee hiding the items on his person in the store. He then paid for some goods but not the items he had hidden before walking out of Walmart. Weathersbee was arrested on a Class B misdemeanor charge for theft over $50. He was released from jail on $300 bail.

Weathersbee, 43, had been a patrol officer with the Northeast Regional Command and had been with the Police Department for 15 years. Last April, he received the department's lifesaving award for helping an injured elderly man who had fallen down at home.
