Appeals court affirms Birmingham man's conviction, death sentence in slaying of 85-year-old woman
May 01, 2016 A Jefferson County man, twice convicted and sentenced to death in the 1997 beating death of an 85-year-old woman, lost an appeal last week. The Alabama Court of Criminal Appeals on Friday affirmed a circuit judge's dismissal of Alfonzo Morris' appeal. Morris was convicted and sentenced to death in 2003 for Miriam Rochester's Feb. 25, 1997 murder, but the Alabama Court of Criminal Appeals overturned the conviction and sentence after determining Morris was denied his rights to due process and a fair trial because he was not provided with funds to hire an independent mental-health expert. Rochester, who weighed 92 pounds and used a walker, was found in the hall of her Second Avenue South home. Evidence showed she had been knocked to the floor with a blunt object in the living room and she moved to the hallway before receiving the fatal blow. The house had been ransacked, and the killer had taken time to eat some lunch meat, drink a beer and smoke a cigarette inside. Morris was linked to the crime by DNA evidence. He also had some of the victim's jewelry when he was arrested about four hours after the murder. http://www.al.com/news/birmingham/in..._birmingh.html Quote:

N.Y. college sheboons accused of fabricating racially motivated attack
May 3, 2016
Three New York college students who said they were targets of a racially motivated attack face multiple charges for what prosecutors are calling a false claim. A grand jury on Monday indicted Ariel Agudio, Asha Burwell and Alexis Briggs, all 20, each on a charge of third-degree assault and multiple counts of falsely reporting an incident, the Albany District Attorney's Office said. Agudio and Burwell also face charges of harassment. Agudio also was charged with two counts of attempted assault. The State University of New York at Albany rallied behind the students, who are black, when they came forward with claims that a group of white men and women attacked them on January 30 in a confrontation on a city bus But university police said an investigation revealed that no one used racial epithets against the women. Instead, they assaulted another passenger and falsely reported the incident.......... http://edition.cnn.com/2016/05/02/us...ack/index.html |
