I have been told that a small tray of caustic solution will permanently and quickly destroy all data on the hard drive. Keeping the tray next to your computer with the housing off, and with a little practice, the hard-drive can be removed and destroyed in seconds.

Remove the hard drive, take it apart and break up the discs with a pair of pliers. Then I would take those pieces and throw them away in different locations. Call me paranoid, but I've read of cases where ZOG has re-assembled "destroyed" hard drives and sent people away to the Gulag with the "evidence" gathered from them.

Some states have laws now that computer stores are required to notify the local police if any "illegal content" is found on your computer. Many people think that just means child porn, but I tend to think otherwise. Look at how many people "think" that we are violating some "law" by doing a distro of WPL papers?

Anything that would be caustic or acidic enough to destroy the surface of an HD , I wouldn't want near me, too dangerous !

( Doesn't sound right, the solution would have to penetrate the housing to get to the platten. That would take a long time and would dilute the solution . Just sounds dangerous . )

You do not want to be messingaround with caustics or acids. I hauled this accaustic acid before, if one drop eye drop of this stuff got on your skin it would eat right trough the skin in to the bone and suck murrow out of you.

To delete everything on your PC, you can use the Boot Nuke Disc which will allow you to overwrite all data on your hard drive multiple times.

It will allow you to do almost anything that you can using a standard Windows install. You can save your important data to a floppy/zip disk, recordable CD or a USB flash drive, both of which are much easier to hide or destroy than a fixed hard disk. You can also encrypt the data for more security.

For destruction of media:
Floppy/Zip - pass a strong magnet across it several times, or throw it into a fire, or both.
CD-R - grind into powder or throw into a fire, or both.
USB flash drive - smash into tiny pieces with a hammer or throw into a fire, or both.
Standard Hard Drive - throw into a VERY HOT fire. Anything less may allow recovery of your data.

Solargeneral.com use to have an extensive section on seemless edge to edge encryption , they may still have it . That would keep out anyone but the NSA and they aren't going to expose their methods for some common court case.

Don't count on a magnet . I once tried erasing floppies with a powerful electromagnet and the data persisted . The field has to be powerful and in intimate contact with the media .

I recommend a "permanent magnet", such as one, paradoxically, from inside a hard drive. Almost all hard drives have extremely strong magnets inside the case. They are positioned in such a way that their magnetic field does not intersect the plane of the disk platter and affect the data.

At my last job, I was training a technician and I disassembled a hard drive to demonstrate its parts. We removed one of the magnets. Then we took a floppy disk with data on it and passed the magnet across it once. We attempted to read the data - nothing. We attempted to format the floppy - no good. I then tried an advanced low-level recovery tool, but it was unable to even align with the tracks on the disk and could not get any data.

A high tech lab might be able to use Magnetic Force Microscopy to recover some of the data, but that would be extremely unlikely to be used in any typical investigation, unless you really piss off the NSA or someone very high up.

With HD's , you'd have to get the fire hotter than the Currie Point of the magnetic material , not always easy to do .

get one of those programs that overwrite the sectors numerous times and it is extremely difficult, if not impossible, to recover data. A large magnet doesn't hurt either.

I'm not a computer guy,but last I heard even deleted material can still be dragged up even when a scrubbing program is used.It is still there no mater what unless you destroy the hard drive.
