Default More than 1,000 oppose BNP event

Quote:
Nineteen people were arrested during a protest by about 1,500 people against the BNP's 10th annual Red, White and Blue festival in Derbyshire.

The march in and around Codnor passed off mostly peacefully, police said.

But some protesters threw bags of flower, eggs and fruit at officers as a few people tried to force their way through a police cordon.

More than 500 officers were deployed, while the demonstration was watched by an aerial camera mounted on a drone.

The police operation is expected to cost some £500,000.

A police spokesman said officers had to act after some protesters blocked or tried to block roads.

Demonstrators from United Against Fascism joined forces with the TUC and Amber Valley Campaign against Racism.

A letter condemning the event was published on Friday on United Against Fascism's website, with signatories including former London Mayor Ken Livingstone and children's author Michael Rosen.

The letter said: "We condemn the BNP and its festival of race hate, and we urge people to reject this party's poisonous and anti-democratic agenda."

BNP deputy leader Simon Darby estimated that about 100 of those visiting the festival had been delayed by the protest march.

He added: "Local people wouldn't even know we were here if they didn't protest.

"We are just ordinary people having a bit of a laugh in the sun."

Derbyshire's Acting Assistant Chief Constable Steve Cotterill said: "We have made fewer arrests than we did last year and these arrests were for sporadic behaviour.

"Only when necessary was force used to keep order and maintain the rights of all who were present on the day.

"At no stage was it necessary to deploy officers in full riot gear."

At last year's BNP event more than 30 protesters were arrested, although no-one was charged with an offence.

Default Police tackle protestors at BNP festival

Quote:
Police have arrested several anti-fascist protestors as hundreds of people gathered to disrupt a BNP festival.

Demonstrators aimed to block roads to prevent speakers getting to the far-right party's Red, White and Blue event in the village of Codnor, Derbyshire, and "kettle" the rally.

Kettling, also known as containment or corralling, is sometimes used by police and involves a large cordon to contain a crowd in a limited area.

The protests have been led by campaign group Unite Against Fascism, the Midlands TUC and the Amber Valley Campaign Against Racism and Facism, who arranged to bus anti-facist supporters to the village.

Derbyshire police confirmed they had made a small number of arrests but the protestors claimed they successfully blocked two road routes to the festival site, which is on private farmland.

“Those arrests were of protesters who had been acting unlawfully,” a spokeswoman said. Last year around 30 protesters were arrested after clashes with police

The main body of demonstrators, which is being monitored by police CCTV cameras, gathered in Codnor’s Market Place and at other approved meeting points. The crowd is expected to march to Codnor Denby Lane later.

Protesters said this morning that they had “occupied and blocked” two key road junctions in the village, before being dispersed by officers. Up to 200 people have refused to move from a road junction close to the festival site. A further 150 blocked the lane between Codnor and Denby between 8.40am and 10am. Several protestors were arrested before the road was cleared.

“We’ve managed to completely seal off the BNP event for over an hour,” said a protester at the Denby blockade. “Lots of Nazis travelling to the BNP rally have been turned away. The police have now pushed us out of the way, but we’re still here demonstrating.”

Organisers say up to 800 people have already gathered in the market place and more are expected to arrive by coach before the protest march begins.

The annual BNP rally, which began on Friday and continues until tomorrow, is now in its 10th year.

An open letter posted on the Unite Against Facism website claimed the event aimed to “build up a hardened neo-Nazi core at the centre of the organisation”.

The letter, which is signed by former London mayor Ken Livingstone and trade union leaders, added: “We condemn the BNP and its festival of race hate, and we urge people to reject this party’s poisonous and anti-democratic agenda.”

The BNP’s deputy leader, Simon Darby, insisted the party was not interested in trouble.

He said: “It’s not in our interests to cause trouble. We’re up there with our wives, girlfriends and children. We just want to have a good time, but these protesters want to latch trouble on to us.”

Yesterday American white supremacist Preston Wiginton was stopped by UK Border Agency officials at Heathrow Airport and sent back to New York, as he attempted to make his way to the festival.

Met some great people this weekend, two beautiful dogs and their owners, two bloody Northerners, and one weird Londoner and his lovely wife.

I haven't got a ticket but I had a ride past on the pushbike this afternoon, there was no commotion whatsoever, just three cop vans one outside the entrance and 1 at each end of codnor-denby lane, a few flags marking the entrance, people camping.

I would estimate about 600 attended over the weekend, and about 350/400 camped for the whole weekend.

There were 19 arrests - all reds - and four have been charged; three charged with public order offences and one for wilful obstruction of a public highway. Fantastic speeches by Nick Griffin, Andrew Brons, Simon Darby, Mark Collet, Martin Wingfield and many other excellent speakers - oh - and a speech from Jonathan Bowden. There were two guest speakers from Sweden and I think Italy but I actually missed them because I was taking part in an Odinist ceremony, although I did meet the Swedish speaker later on with Nick. I feel guilty because I've forgotten his name but he was a very nice fellow.

There was a veterans parade this morning organised by Liverpool BNP which was very moving (got that on video), and Liverpool also organised some history and heritage based quizzes. I have to say Liverpool BNP made the weekend - they constantly had something going on with lots of prizes and laughter.

The reds did something to the water supply late on Saturday night and there was a leak somewhere on the site but the water went off so briefly that hardly anyone noticed.

Three reds decided to sneak through the hedge on Saturday afternoon; unfortunately for them the section of hedge they came through led straight into the field where security was camped.

All in all it was a great weekend with no trouble at all from the BNP but plenty of screaming and trouble from the reds. I think Sir Rolf of Harris got some footage of the reds from outside the gates.

People trying to get into the festival were held up for five hours by the screaming unwashed blocking the roads, and the locals (who hate us there and really don't want us in Denby, apparently) brought tea, biscuits and glasses of fizzy drink for the children held up waiting to get in. One lady in Denby was so disgusted by the behaviour of the communists disrupting her village and so impressed by the waiting BNP that she had been talking to, joined up on the spot and came and enjoyed the rest of the weekend with us. She loved the way we had taken down all the "smash the fascist BNP" posters from her village - (little did she know they were much prized trophies!)

As I was reading that paragraph I was hoping it was going to end something like this.

That would have been more fun and lasted longer.

The guest speakers were Roberto Fiore and Marc Abramson from a Swedish nationalist party.

It is odd that the BNP is considered racist for criticizing Islam; Islam itself is racist towards Pakistanis for imposing an Arabic Qur'an on an Urdu speaking people.

Ohhhh - just remembered something else (sorry - am absolutely knackered and have a splitting headache due to trying to outdrink the Scousers last night so am typing as I remember)

One drunken red staggered bravely onto the field on the Friday night. Security and police escorted him back to his car - and then promptly nicked him for drink-driving.

One of the best sights for me was a little earlier on Friday night when the shout went up that reds were on the field. The sight of hundreds of BNP members running down the field in order to protect the many children around the site was fantastic. As it turned out, it wasn't a red, but a member who had been celebrating in the village and, unable to find the entrance, had come through the hedge.

Just got back from the RWB and to be honest I will not be rejoining the BNP when my membership comes up.On Saturday morning there was a 'debate' about the challenge from the Equalities and human rights. What a farce,Darby and Griffin were like a double act,It is the intention of the BNP leaders to let none whites join the party and this little show was there to soften the blow.
Griffin had selected people in the audience who he only took questions off,it was so obvious.
One of his selected spouted off how he had wonderful black and Asian friends that voted BNP and that they should be allowed to join.I later on found out that this guy was a organizer. After more of this tripe off different people in the audience Griffin said something i could hardly believe,he said "hardliners will say we have sold out but they are idiots with there silly tattoos and their cans of beer".A this point I just got up and walked out.

I have been a BNP member for nearly 10 years, this weekend was the straw that broke the camels back for me.Its was wrong for Griffin to let his non-white friend on to the site too IMHO.

Convicted Italian fascist Roberto Fiore addresses BNP followers in Derbyshire

Right-wing European activists have addressed the British National Party’s annual gathering despite protests by anti-fascists that blockaded the event and resulted in 19 arrests in the Derbyshire countryside.

Last night Roberto Fiore, the leader of the Italian far-right party Forza Nuova and a friend of the BNP leader Nick Griffin, spoke to several hundred people at the Red, White and Blue Festival about the “threat” to Europe from Islamic extremism.

Mr Fiore, who once said he was happy to be described as a neo-fascist, was sentenced in 1985 to 10 years prison in Italy, in his absence, for being a member of the political wing of the Armed Revolutionary Nuclei, a fascist terror group.

The group’s armed wing was implicated in the Bologna bombing of 1980, which killed 85 people. Mr Fiore’s jail term was eventually “timed out” under Italy's statute of limitation laws, and he was able to return to his homeland in April 1999.

Mr Fiore was joined at the BNP gathering last night by Marc Abramson, a councillor for a nationalist Swedish political party. Mr Abramson told The Times that he would be speaking about the need for a “total stop” to immigration as it was out of control in Europe.

Mr Griffin, an MEP in the North West, is scheduled to address the gathering this afternoon.

Yesterday police arrested 19 anti-fascist protesters during a demonstration outside the event, near Denby.

More than 1,000 protesters from the group Unite Against Fascism and trade unions gathered to express their anger at the BNP’s presence. About 100 protesters successfully blockaded the road for more than an hour, delaying the arrival of some BNP supporters.

A statement on the UAF website today said: “Unite Against Fascism is aware of around a dozen anti-fascists arrested on the day, mostly those involved in occupying road junctions.

“We believe that such tactics of non-violent direct action are a legitimate response to the BNP’s racist thuggery and we do not believe anyone should be arrested for such actions.”

The police operation, which included a helicopter and several hundred officers, is estimated to have cost about £500,000.

Denby and nearby Codnor, where several shops closed, were disrupted for most of the day as roads were closed and streets blockaded.

Residents said that they were fed up with the disturbance from the festival, which has been held in their village for the past three years.

Some blamed the protesters but others said that the presence of the BNP had besmirched the village’s reputation nationally. Many were fearful of speaking out against the party, claiming there would be “retribution” as they had been threatened by members in the past.

John Lumsden, a resident who lives a few houses away from the field where the rally takes place, told The Times: “The bottom line is that no one wants them here. This is a little community where everybody is friendly and we don’t agree with their values.

“But not only that, this shatters the peace of the place. The event is far too big and it is simply an inappropriate site.” Mr Griffin told The Times that the BNP event was a family festival and supporters merely wanted to be left to themselves.

He said: “We don’t create any havoc at all. No-one would even know we were here if it weren’t for the far Left trying to use this as a cynical recruiting bid to try and get ethnic minorities on side. They are going to cost the taxpayer a lot of money.”

A spokesman for Searchlight, the anti-fascist group, said that Mr Fiore’s presence “says all that anyone needs to know about the modern BNP”.
